Taxonomy & naming
The long-snout cichlid was described by the American ichthyologist Theodore Nicholas Gill in 1877, in a joint paper with the naturalist J. F. Bransford titled 'Synopsis of the fishes of Lake Nicaragua,' published in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Gill named it Heros rostratus on a series of syntypes from Lake Nicaragua; eleven specimens survive, the bulk (nine) in the U.S. National Museum (USNM 16872) with one transferred to the Natural History Museum in London (BMNH 1905.3.27.1). Few Central American cichlids have been shuffled between genera as often. Over the following century the species was carried as Cichlasoma rostratum, then Astatheros rostratum, briefly Thorichthys rostratus, and Amphilophus rostratus — a reflection less of the fish itself than of the long, unresolved argument over how to carve up the sprawling genus 'Cichlasoma.' That argument was largely settled for Middle American cichlids by Říčan, Piálek, Dragová and Novák in their 2016 revision (Vertebrate Zoology 66), a combined molecular and morphological analysis that split the old assemblage into a series of natural genera. They placed rostratus in Cribroheros, a genus they raised for a group of lower-Central-American substrate-sifters previously lumped under Astatheros — the so-called alfari group, named for its best-known member Cribroheros alfari. Within Cichlinae the genus sits in the heroine radiation; the Cichlid Room Companion files it in tribe Therapsini. The species was reviewed, keyed and figured by William A. Bussing in his standard 'Peces de las aguas continentales de Costa Rica' (1998), and Angulo and colleagues confirmed the Cribroheros placement in their treatments of Costa Rican freshwater fishes (2013, 2023).
Morphology
Cribroheros rostratus is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid reaching about 7.5 in in standard length (FishBase), with well-grown aquarium males occasionally reported larger; wild fish are commonly smaller. The single most diagnostic feature is the one the names keep returning to: the snout is conspicuously produced and pointed (Latin rostratus, 'long-snouted' or 'beaked'), with a small, low-set, somewhat ventral mouth — the working end of a fish built to nose into sand and soft sediment. Ground colour is a pale silvery to pearly tan or pinkish, often with a faint greenish or golden cast, overlain by a row of dark mid-lateral blotches and a discrete spot on the caudal-fin base; the markings intensify and a darker lateral band can flush in during display, spawning or stress. The unpaired fins are translucent and can carry rows of pale spotting. Sexual dimorphism is present but modest, in the usual Central American pattern: males grow larger, develop a heavier nuchal profile and somewhat extended dorsal- and anal-fin tips, while ripe females are rounder-bodied and frequently take on a darker, higher-contrast breeding dress. Outside of breeding the sexes are not always easy to separate at a glance.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Atlantic (Caribbean) slope of lower Central America, where it is essentially a fish of the San Juan basin and its lakes. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes give its range as the San Juan drainage of Nicaragua and Costa Rica — including the great lakes Nicaragua (Cocibolca), Managua (Xolotlán) and Masaya — south along the Costa Rican Caribbean lowlands to about the Matina River. The whole of this range falls within a single freshwater ecoregion, FEOW 205 'San Juan (Nicaragua/Costa Rica),' a cichlid-rich province whose lake and crater-lake systems hold a notable share of Central America's endemic cichlids. It is a lowland, warm-water floodplain fish, recorded between roughly 0 and 656 ft elevation, in lakes and in rivers of low to high current velocity. FishBase characterises it as benthopelagic and tolerant of a wide thermal envelope, about 73–93 °F, over the soft sand and mud bottoms it depends on for feeding. As a shallow floodplain and lake-margin inhabitant its depth range is modest — it is a fish of the upper few metres rather than the open lake depths.
Feeding
Cribroheros rostratus is a benthic substrate-sifter, the feeding mode the genus name itself advertises: Cribroheros combines the Latin cribrum, 'sieve,' with the old cichlid genus Heros, in reference to the substratum-sifting strategy shared across the group. The fish takes mouthfuls of sand and soft sediment, sorts edible matter from grit inside the buccal cavity and expels the cleaned substrate through mouth and gills. FishBase places it low on the food web (trophic level about 2.6) and records a diet dominated by aquatic insects together with abundant detritus and sediment; its close congener Cribroheros alfari is documented sifting sand and mud specifically for dipteran and mayfly larvae plus seeds, a good model for the genus as a whole. The pointed snout and ventral mouth are the morphological signature of this winnowing habit. In the lake and floodplain community it functions as a generalist invertivore-detritivore working the soft bottom, rather than as a predator of other fishes.
Mating
Like the other Cribroheros, the long-snout cichlid is a biparental, pair-bonding substrate spawner, and outside of breeding it is comparatively peaceable for a Central American cichlid. Pairs form within a loose population on the substrate; a bonded male and female select and clean a spawning surface — a flat stone, a root, or cleared sand within a depression — and defend a territory around it together. As in related lake and floodplain cichlids of the San Juan basin, spawning is tied to the seasonal cycle, with breeding readiness building toward the end of the dry season and the onset of the rains (the pattern documented in detail for Cribroheros alfari). Courtship is the usual cichlid repertoire of lateral displays, fin-spreading and substrate-cleaning, with the heightened breeding coloration of the female signalling her condition. Territorial aggression sharpens around the nest but does not approach the ferocity of the large Amphilophus/Parachromis lake cichlids it shares its waters with.
Breeding
Cribroheros rostratus is an open or semi-open biparental substrate spawner. The adhesive eggs are laid on a cleaned hard surface or in a sand depression and tended by both parents — the female concentrating on fanning and direct egg-care, the male on perimeter defence — in the standard Central American division of labour. After hatching, the wrigglers are typically moved to one or more pre-dug pits, and once free-swimming the fry are herded and guarded as a school by both parents. Clutch size is not separately published for rostratus; the genus-typical figure comes from its well-studied congener Cribroheros alfari, which spawns roughly 300–400 eggs at the close of the dry season just before the wet, and aquarist accounts of rostratus 'Río Burro' breeding colonies report comparable broods, with several hundred fry raised per spawn. As with most substrate-spawning Central American cichlids, parental care is extended — eggs, larvae and free-swimming fry are all guarded — and spawnings can recur at short intervals when the pair is in condition. No specialised tunnel- or cave-nesting behaviour has been documented; this is a conventional pit-and-substrate breeder.
In the aquarium
The long-snout cichlid is an established, if not especially common, aquarium fish, traded as 'rostratus,' 'long-snout cichlid' or under its older trade name Astatheros rostratus and offered as wild-influenced lines such as 'Río Burro.' It is among the more even-tempered medium Central Americans and is a reasonable choice for a keeper who wants a substrate-sifting cichlid without the overt aggression of a Parachromis or Amphilophus. A single pair needs a tank on the order of 47 in / roughly 65 US gal or more; a group from which a pair is allowed to form does better still in a larger footprint, where subordinate fish can keep clear during spawning.
The defining requirement is a deep bed of fine sand. This is an obligate sand-sifter, and gravel both frustrates the natural feeding behaviour and risks gill abrasion; sand also lets the fish dig the pits it uses for fry. Provide open swimming room over the sand, with scattered driftwood, roots and a few flat stones or a cave to serve as territory markers and spawning sites. Water should track the warm, soft-to-moderate Atlantic-slope lowlands the species comes from: temperature around 75–86 °F and pH roughly 6.5–8.0 (it tolerates the harder, more alkaline water of the Nicaraguan lakes as well as softer river water), with the usual generous filtration and regular water changes that any messy substrate-sifter demands — the digging keeps fine material in suspension, so good mechanical filtration pays off.
Feeding is straightforward: a varied diet of sinking pellets, frozen and live invertebrates (bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia), and occasional vegetable matter suits its omnivorous, insect-leaning natural diet. It feeds primarily off the bottom, so sinking foods are taken most readily. For tankmates, choose robust but not hyper-aggressive companions of similar size — other peaceful-to-moderate Central Americans, larger characins and well-armoured catfish work; avoid pairing it with the genuinely belligerent big cichlids of its home waters, which will dominate it, and avoid tiny fish small enough to be treated as food. The most common keeper mistakes are using gravel instead of sand, under-filtering a fish that constantly stirs the bed, and overcrowding a breeding pair so it has no room to hold a territory.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Cribroheros rostratus as Least Concern (assessed 19 July 2019 by T. J. Lyons, published 2020), with a stable population. The species occurs across the San Juan basin of Nicaragua and Costa Rica, a reasonably wide range for a Central American freshwater fish, and it is a habitat generalist of lakes, rivers and floodplains rather than a narrow-range endemic, which buffers it against localised disturbance. The assessment nonetheless flags the familiar suite of pressures on lower-Central-American freshwaters: pollution from agriculture and from domestic and urban wastewater, mining and quarrying, logging, fishing and harvesting, and — a significant concern in the Nicaraguan great lakes specifically — introduced non-native species. None of these is documented as a population-level threat to this particular cichlid at present, but the long-running pressures on Lake Nicaragua and the wider San Juan drainage are the backdrop against which its status should be read. It carries no CITES listing and is of no commercial-fishery interest beyond the ornamental trade.
