Divandu albimarginatus is a small, deep-bodied West-Central African cichlid and the only species in its genus — a monotypic member of the chromidotilapiine radiation that dominates the rivers of Lower Guinea. Described in 2000 from the coastal drainages of the Republic of the Congo and southern Gabon, it is a clear-water stream fish of the rainforest interior, drab brown with a row of dark bars and a tell-tale white-and-red edge to the tail that gives it its name. What sets it apart from its many relatives is reproductive: where most chromidotilapiines pair up and guard eggs on a surface or in a cave, Divandu is a polygamous maternal mouthbrooder that shows no sexual dimorphism at all, an unusual combination that earned it a genus of its own.

Taxonomy & naming

Divandu albimarginatus was described in 2000 by the Austrian cichlid specialist Anton Lamboj and the Belgian ichthyologist Jos Snoeks, in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (11(4): 355–360), as both a new species and a new genus erected to hold it. It has remained monotypic ever since — Divandu contains this one species and no other. The fish belongs to the tribe Chromidotilapiini (the chromidotilapiines), the most species-rich group of cichlids in West and West-Central Africa, which also includes Chromidotilapia, Pelvicachromis, Benitochromis, Thysochromis, Parananochromis and Congochromis. All chromidotilapiines share a well-developed, visor-like mucous pad hanging from the roof of the pharynx and tuberculate gill rakers on the lower limb of the first gill arch, and Divandu is no exception. It is set apart from the surface- and cave-spawning genera (Thysochromis, Chromidotilapia, Pelvicachromis, Benitochromis) by having only 12 circumpeduncular scales rather than 15–16, and from Parananochromis and Congochromis by having five openings of the laterosensory canal in the lachrymal (first infraorbital) bone instead of four. In the standard reference work for the region, The Fresh and Brackish Water Fishes of Lower Guinea, the genus account was prepared by Lamboj together with Melanie Stiassny of the American Museum of Natural History. The species is not known to have any junior synonyms.

Morphology

This is a relatively small, deep-bodied and laterally compressed cichlid, reaching about 5 in in standard length; the body becomes proportionally deeper in larger specimens, with body depth ranging from about 28 to 40 percent of standard length. The head is short, the snout generally shorter than the postorbital length, and both the outer and inner rows of teeth in the jaws are simple and pointed (unicuspid). The fin counts are XIII–XVI dorsal spines with 9–12 soft rays, three anal spines with 7–8 soft rays, and 24–25 vertebrae. The first pelvic-fin ray is the longest in adults of both sexes and usually reaches back to the anus or beyond; several of the dorsal and anal soft rays are drawn out into points, and the upper and lower edges of the caudal fin are produced as well. The base colour is a plain pale brown, paler on the cheeks and belly, typically crossed by six or seven darker vertical bars on the flank and marked by a well-defined spot on the gill cover. Reddish-black blotches on the caudal, soft dorsal and anal fins often coalesce into bands near the body. The feature that gives the fish its name is the fin edging: the dorsal, anal, pelvic and upper caudal margins carry a narrow red rim, the lower edge of the tail is bordered in white, and the soft dorsal shows a metallic silvery flush beneath its red margin. Remarkably for a chromidotilapiine, the species shows no sexual dimorphism in either shape or colour and only the most minimal dichromatism, so males and females are essentially indistinguishable by eye — a trait unique within the tribe and one of the reasons the genus was recognized as distinct.

Habitat

Divandu albimarginatus is endemic to the Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal province of West-Central Africa, in the Ogooué–Nyanga–Kouilou-Niari freshwater ecoregion. It is recorded from the Kouilou-Niari and Loémé–Loukéné basins of the Republic of the Congo and from the Nyanga, the upper Ngounié and the Ogooué (Ogowe) River system of southern Gabon. Within these drainages it occupies the middle and lower reaches of rivers and their forest streams, collected at sites running through primary or secondary rainforest. The original description and the regional fish fauna both characterise its water as clear — visibility greater than a metre — close to neutral and softly mineralized, with pH around 7 to 7.5, very low conductivity (on the order of 50 microsiemens), and notably cool temperatures of about 70–72 °F for an equatorial lowland fish. At several Gabonese localities it has been taken from small forest streamlets and from a stream on the Bongolo–Mbélénaletembé road in the Ngounié–Ogooué basin, and the type series and figured specimens come from the Louetsi River above the Bongolo rapids. Where it occurs it lives side by side (syntopically) with the chromidotilapiine Chromidotilapia mamonekenei, which is generally the more abundant of the two.

Feeding

Divandu is a small-particle generalist rather than a specialist predator. Its diet, as reported in the regional literature, is made up of small food items of both animal and plant origin, together with detritus and aufwuchs — the thin film of algae, micro-invertebrates and organic matter that coats submerged surfaces in a forest stream. The simple, pointed (unicuspid) teeth of both jaw rows and the short snout are consistent with a fish that grazes and picks at the substrate and biofilm rather than one built to seize larger prey, and FishBase places its estimated trophic level near 3.3. In its rainforest-stream community it functions as a modest benthic forager working the bottom and the surfaces of wood, leaf litter and rock for whatever small edible material it can glean. A survey of monogenean gill parasites across Lower Guinea chromidotilapiines, notably, recovered none from the Divandu specimens it examined, an incidental but interesting hint at the ecology of this little-studied fish.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour is what most clearly separates Divandu from its relatives, and it was central to Lamboj and Snoeks's decision to give the fish its own genus. The species is described as polygamous: rather than forming the stable, jointly defending pairs typical of most chromidotilapiines, it organizes around a maternal mouthbrooding system in which a male may spawn with more than one female. That said, the describers noted that the fish does go through brief periods of pair bonding in the run-up to spawning, so the social system is not purely promiscuous but a short-lived, loosely paired prelude to a female-incubated brood. Because the sexes are externally identical — no dimorphism in size, finnage or colour, and only minimal colour change with mood or readiness — visual sexing and the bright nuptial signalling seen in many related cichlids are essentially absent here, which makes the courtship comparatively understated. Detailed field observations of spawning sequence, territory holding and pair dynamics in the wild have not been published; what is documented is the basic mode rather than the choreography.

Breeding

Divandu albimarginatus is an ovophilic maternal mouthbrooder: the female takes the fertilized eggs into her mouth and broods them herself, a strategy that contrasts sharply with the biparental substrate- and cave-spawning of most other Lower Guinea chromidotilapiines such as Pelvicachromis and Chromidotilapia. Ovophilic mouthbrooding means the eggs are picked up at or very shortly after spawning, rather than being allowed to hatch on a surface first; some sources flag the possibility that the species may at times be larvophilic (taking up larvae instead), but the primary description treats it as ovophilic. There is no published count of clutch size for this fish, and fecundity, incubation time and the details of fry release have not been formally documented. As a guide, congeneric and other small chromidotilapiine mouthbrooders typically produce modest clutches on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a hundred or so relatively large eggs, in keeping with the trade-off mouthbrooders make between egg number and parental investment, but no firm figure exists for Divandu itself. The combination of maternal-only mouthbrooding with brief pre-spawning pairing, in a fish with no sexual dimorphism, is the unusual reproductive signature that defines the genus.

In the aquarium

Divandu albimarginatus is a genuine rarity in the hobby and has never become an established aquarium fish; it is essentially unknown in the general trade and there is little published first-hand husbandry to draw on. Any keeper encountering it is far more likely to do so through a specialist West-African cichlid network or a collecting expedition than through a shop. What guidance can be offered comes from its wild habitat and from experience with related small chromidotilapiines, and it should be read as informed inference rather than a proven care sheet.

The key, easily overlooked point is temperature: this is a cool-water rainforest-stream fish, recorded in the wild at only about 70–72 °F, distinctly cooler than the high-20s °C at which most tropical community tanks and many African cichlids are kept. It should be maintained toward the lower end of the tropical range — roughly 72–77 °F — rather than warm, and would likely suffer if kept hot. The water it knows is clear, soft and close to neutral: aim for soft, low-conductivity water around pH 6.5–7.5, well filtered and well oxygenated to mimic a flowing forest stream, with regular water changes to keep dissolved wastes low.

As a small, relatively deep-bodied fish of about 4.5 in, a single individual or small group needs a tank of moderate footprint rather than great size — something in the order of 39.5–47 in of length for a group, furnished as a soft-water biotope. Sand or fine gravel, a tangle of driftwood and roots, leaf litter and some rockwork to create broken sightlines and grazing surfaces would suit a fish that feeds on aufwuchs and small benthic items; subdued light and tannin-stained water echo its rainforest origins. It will take small live, frozen and prepared foods readily given its catholic small-particle diet. Because the sexes are externally identical, deliberately setting up pairs is impractical — a group is the sensible approach, allowing fish to sort themselves out — and the maternal mouthbrooding habit means a brooding female will need quiet refuge. Tankmates, if any, are best limited to small, peaceful soft-water species from the same kind of cool, clear stream; this is a fish for the dedicated West-African specialist rather than a community centrepiece.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Divandu albimarginatus as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out on 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants and published in 2010, with the population trend listed as unknown. The species is not listed by CITES or CMS, and FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low and its resilience as high. As a small, non-commercial forest-stream fish with no fishery and negligible presence in the ornamental trade, it faces no direct harvesting pressure. Its range, however, is genuinely restricted — a set of coastal and interior drainages spanning southern Gabon and the Republic of the Congo within a single freshwater ecoregion — so its long-term outlook is tied to the health of those rainforest rivers. The broad threats to freshwater biodiversity across Lower Guinea, documented in regional IUCN reviews, include deforestation and resulting siltation, expanding agriculture, and localized mining and infrastructure development, all of which can degrade the clear, cool, soft-water streams this fish depends on. None of these is recorded as an active, species-level threat to Divandu at present, but as a narrow-range endemic of a still-incompletely-surveyed region, it warrants continued monitoring rather than complacency.
