Etroplus canarensis, the Canara pearlspot, is a small, banded cichlid found nowhere on Earth but a few river miles of coastal Karnataka in southwestern India. It belongs to an ancient and peculiar lineage: the Etroplinae are Gondwanan relicts, the only cichlids native to the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka, and a sister group to all the rest of the family's thousands of African and American species. Of the three Indian Etroplus, canarensis is the odd one out twice over — it is the only one confined to pure fresh water rather than the brackish coastal belt, and the only one restricted to a single small river system. Long thought extinct after its 1877 description, it was rediscovered in the late 1980s and remains one of the rarest cichlids in the hobby and an Endangered species in the wild.

Taxonomy & naming

The Canara pearlspot was described by the British army surgeon and ichthyologist Francis Day in 1877, in the third part of his monumental The Fishes of India (page 414, plate 89, figure 5), from material collected in South Canara on the southwestern coast of the subcontinent — the type locality the name still anchors to. Day placed it directly in Etroplus, the genus he and his predecessors used for the Indian and Sri Lankan cichlids, and there it has remained; no synonyms are in current use. Etroplus belongs to the subfamily Etroplinae, a small assemblage of just three genera and roughly seventeen species split between peninsular India and Madagascar (the Malagasy Paretroplus and the monotypic Pseudetroplus among them). These fish matter out of all proportion to their number. Molecular phylogenies (Sparks & Smith 2004) place the Indian–Malagasy cichlids as the sister group to all other cichlids worldwide, a deep split that mirrors the breakup of the Gondwanan supercontinent; the Indian Etroplus are, in effect, living relicts of cichlid origins, the only members of the family that reached the subcontinent by riding the Indian plate rather than by later dispersal. Within the genus there are only three species — the green chromide Etroplus suratensis, the orange chromide (now often placed in Pseudetroplus) Etroplus maculatus, and Etroplus canarensis. The first two range across southern India and lowland Sri Lanka in fresh and brackish water; canarensis alone is a strict freshwater fish restricted to a single river system. Day's species was so seldom encountered after its description that it was widely presumed extinct, until it was rediscovered in the wild in the late 1980s (Menon, Rema Devi & Burgess 1993) and brought to wider notice when live fish reached the aquarium trade around the turn of the century.

Morphology

Etroplus canarensis is a compact, laterally compressed, deep-bodied cichlid built much like its congeners but unmistakable in pattern. Most aquarium and field references give an adult length of about 4–4.5 in; FishBase lists a maximum of 4.5 in total length from Talwar & Jhingran's standard work, while preserved museum specimens of 6 in TL (and anecdotal reports to 8 in) suggest the species can grow larger than the figures usually quoted. The fin counts are diagnostic: roughly 21–22 spines and 8 soft rays in the long-based dorsal fin, and 14–16 spines with 6–7 soft rays in the anal fin (Zoological Survey of India). That heavily spined anal fin is the very feature the genus name commemorates. The body bears about eight dark vertical bars running down a paler, often greenish-silver to brassy ground, and the flanks and gill covers carry the scattered iridescent flecks and pearlescent spotting that give the fish its 'pearlspot' name; mature fish develop an attractive blue, squiggly vermiculation across the operculum. A faint dark blotch on the side — a vestige of the tilapia-like 'spot' common in the family — persists in some individuals, perhaps more often in females. Reliable external sexual dimorphism has not been documented in the literature; ripe females are reported simply as rounder and fuller-bodied when in spawning condition, as is typical of the genus, and the sexes are otherwise very similar.

Habitat

The entire known range of the Canara pearlspot is a short stretch of two adjacent rivers in the South Canara region of coastal Karnataka, India: the Nethravathi and its tributary the Kumaradhara, which join near the town of Uppinangadi before flowing west to the Arabian Sea. Both rivers drain the seaward flank of the Western Ghats, the long mountain chain whose streams are a global hotspot of freshwater fish endemism, and canarensis is endemic to that range (Dahanukar et al. 2004). Unlike the green and orange chromides, which thrive in the brackish estuaries and lagoons of the coast, canarensis is a strict freshwater fish and does not enter saline water — a key part of why its range is so narrow. It is a benthopelagic species of clear, flowing, well-oxygenated water, associated with rocky and bouldery substrates, submerged wood, and marginal vegetation that provide cover for what is a shy, shoaling fish. Precise in-situ chemistry is sparsely published, but water from the same river system is reported as soft and slightly acidic to near-neutral — on the order of pH 6.0–6.5 and around 5 °dGH — at temperatures of roughly 72–82 °F, reflecting cool, shaded, monsoon-fed hill streams rather than the warm lowland lagoons its relatives favour. FishBase classifies the species as amphidromous, implying some movement within the freshwater river system, though no obligate sea-going phase is involved.

Feeding

Etroplus canarensis is a small-mouthed, generalist browser low on the food web; FishBase estimates a trophic level near 2.9, consistent with an omnivore that leans toward small invertebrates and plant and detrital material rather than predation. In the wild and in aquaria it is observed grazing aufwuchs — the film of algae, micro-invertebrates and organic matter that coats rocks and submerged wood — and picking small food items from the substrate and from among the stones it shelters in. It is a notably shy and deliberate feeder, working over surfaces rather than chasing prey in open water, and it readily takes small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp, eventually accepting prepared flakes and pellets in captivity. Its retiring feeding style is ecologically unremarkable but has direct husbandry consequences: in a community it is easily outcompeted at the food bowl by bolder, faster fish. There is no published evidence that the species is in any way predatory on other fishes.

Mating

Detailed observations of courtship and pair formation in Etroplus canarensis specifically are scarce — much of what is inferred comes from its better-studied congeners and from limited captive accounts. The species is a gregarious, shoaling fish for most of its life, rarely straying far from the group, and like other Etroplus it is thought to form monogamous pairs that separate from the shoal to breed. In the related chromides, a pair establishes and jointly defends a territory around a chosen spawning surface, and both members take part in an extended cooperative brood-care relationship; the Canara pearlspot is believed to follow the same biparental, substrate-oriented template. Wild fish are reported to reach maturity and first breed in their second year. Because the species is so rare in collections, its pre-spawning behaviour has not been documented in the careful detail available for many New-World cichlids, and the account here is therefore necessarily drawn by analogy to its relatives rather than from direct study of the wild fish.

Breeding

Breeding in Etroplus canarensis has only rarely been recorded, and never described in full scientific detail; the species is regarded as a biparental substrate (open-)spawner on the model of its congeners. In the well-documented chromides, a pair cleans a firm surface — a rock, root or hard substrate — and deposits a clutch of on the order of 200 small, oval, stalked eggs that are attached upright like minute clubs, in the manner that has earned the family comparison with marine clownfish. Both parents guard and fan the eggs and then the wriggling larvae, and the brood-care phase is unusually long and intimate: as in their relatives and (famously) in Discus, the fry of Etroplus feed for a time by grazing mucus-like secretions from the flanks of the parents, a behaviour that ties the family together with the South American Symphysodon as one of the few cichlid lineages to nourish young directly from the parental body. Clutch size, egg and larval development, and triggers for Etroplus canarensis itself are not separately published and are reasonably assumed to fall within this genus-typical pattern; reports of captive spawning exist but remain anecdotal. Parental care is therefore best described as biparental and protracted, with both fish tending eggs, larvae and free-swimming fry over a period of weeks.

In the aquarium

The Canara pearlspot is one of the rarest cichlids ever to appear in the hobby. It was essentially unknown in the trade after its 1877 description, was exhibited at the Aquarama show following its rediscovery, and reached European aquarists only in very small numbers around 2000 — a handful of expensive juveniles imported directly from India. It has remained scarce and is not a fish most keepers will ever encounter; what follows is drawn from the few serious accounts available.

This is a shy, peaceful, strongly shoaling fish, and that temperament dictates everything about keeping it. It should be kept in a group — never singly or as a lone pair — and never with boisterous or fin-nipping tankmates, which will intimidate it away from food and from the open water. The fish rarely wander more than a foot or so from their shoal, so they need the security of numbers and of structure to feel safe. A spacious tank is appropriate to both the eventual adult size and the need for a group: the small documented import was housed in a system of around 240 US gal, and while a determined keeper could manage a group in less, generous space and sightline-breaking décor are the priority. Aquascape with smooth boulders, bogwood and a sand or fine-gravel substrate that recalls the rocky riverbed, leaving open swimming lanes for the shoal.

Water should be clean, warm and well-oxygenated, mirroring the flowing hill streams the species comes from: roughly 72–82 °F, a pH from mildly acidic to neutral (about 6.0–7.6 has been used successfully), and soft to moderately hard water. Crucially — and unlike the green and orange chromides — Etroplus canarensis is a pure freshwater fish and must not be given the salt that older books recommend for the brackish chromides; adding salt is a genuine error with this species. Brisk, river-like flow and strong filtration suit it, both to oxygenate the water and to echo its natural current. The main practical difficulty is feeding: these are timid, slow feeders that browse aufwuchs and take small live and frozen foods (bloodworm, Daphnia, brine shrimp) before learning to accept flake, so they fare poorly alongside greedy competitors and benefit from a quiet tank where food reaches the bottom and the shoal has time to graze.

Given its rarity, conservation status and demanding temperament, this is emphatically a specialist's fish rather than a beginner's, and anyone fortunate enough to keep it should prioritise captive breeding of any group obtained, since wild stock is genuinely scarce and the species is threatened in nature.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Etroplus canarensis as Endangered (criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)), assessed on 18 March 2011 and published in 2011 by A. Ali as part of the Western Ghats freshwater species assessment. The listing rests on the species' extremely restricted distribution — it is confined to a small extent of occurrence across only two known locations, the Nethravathi and Kumaradhara rivers in Karnataka — together with a continuing decline in the quality of its habitat; the population trend at assessment was nonetheless judged stable. The threats flagged are the familiar pressures on Western Ghats rivers: mining and quarrying (and the sand extraction and siltation that come with them), agricultural and forestry effluents, and harvesting of the fish itself, including for the ornamental aquarium trade, where its distinctive pattern makes it a sought-after Indian native (Raghavan et al. 2013). A molecular study of the wild population (Joseph et al. 2019) found that the Nethravathi–Kumaradhara fish behave genetically as a single, unstructured population carrying low genetic diversity and bearing the signature of a past bottleneck or founder event — a finding with direct conservation weight, because a narrow-range endemic with little genetic variation has correspondingly little resilience to habitat change, disease or over-collection. The species is not listed on CITES. Its long-term security depends on protecting the modest stretch of South Canara river it occupies and on shifting trade demand toward captive-bred rather than wild-caught fish.
