Geophagus gottwaldi is a large eartheater cichlid restricted to the blackwater tributaries of the upper Río Orinoco in southern Venezuela, where it works bare sandy bottoms wedged among rocks, sometimes in surprisingly strong current. Described only in 2006, it belongs to the small set of Geophagus species that wear a bold dark stripe running down through the eye — the so-called 'non-surinamensis' eartheaters — and like its kin it is a delayed (larvophilous) biparental mouthbrooder, guarding eggs on the substrate before taking the hatched larvae into the mouth. It remains rare in the hobby and poorly documented, a fish known mostly from a single elegant species description.

Taxonomy & naming

Geophagus gottwaldi was described in 2006 by the German ichthyologists Ingo Schindler and Wolfgang Staeck, in the Dresden museum journal Zoologische Abhandlungen (volume 56, pages 91–97). The holotype (MTD F 30394, with two paratypes) was taken in the lower Río Sipapo at the Raudal Caldero, around 4°55'N 67°45'W, in the Estado Amazonas of southwestern Venezuela — a tributary system of the upper Río Orinoco. The authors distinguished it from every other described Geophagus by a combination of characters: a prominent, complete dark infraorbital (sub-eye) stripe, a rectangular mid-flank blotch, a caudal fin patterned with rounded light spots, 34–36 scales in the lateral-line row, and a large adult size exceeding 8 in total length. The genus Geophagus was erected by Johann Jakob Heckel in 1840 and was rediagnosed in the modern sense by Sven Kullander (1986), who restricted it to the sand-sifting 'eartheaters' bearing paired caudal extensions of the swimbladder. Within that genus, Geophagus gottwaldi falls outside the large, much-traded Geophagus surinamensis species group; instead it sits with the small assemblage of species — alongside Geophagus taeniopareius, Geophagus grammepareius, Geophagus argyrostictus and Geophagus harreri — that share a complete infraorbital stripe and have, somewhat awkwardly, never been given a formal group name, usually being referred to simply as the 'non-surinamensis-group' Geophagus. The species was subsequently treated in Schindler & Artigas Azas's 2015 review of the genus, and the Catalog of Fishes records its range as extending from the upper Orinoco tributaries of Venezuela into the Rio Negro of Brazil.

Morphology

This is one of the larger eartheaters: the largest type specimen measured 8 in in standard length, and the original diagnosis cites a total length of more than 8 in. The body is comparatively elongate for a Geophagus, with the steeply rising forehead typical of the genus. Fin counts are VIII–IX dorsal spines and 12 dorsal soft rays, with 3 anal spines and 8 anal soft rays. The defining feature is the head pattern — a bold, complete dark stripe runs from the eye down across the cheek (the infraorbital stripe), the single most reliable mark separating this fish and its few close relatives from the spotted-faced surinamensis-group eartheaters. A roughly rectangular dark blotch sits on the middle of each flank, and the caudal fin carries a scatter of irregularly arranged, rounded pale spots across its whole surface. The diagnosis also notes a relatively high dorsal-spine count and 34–36 scales in the upper lateral-line (E1) row. Live colour is not well documented in the scientific literature, but in keeping with its blackwater habitat the fish shows the muted brassy-to-olive ground and iridescent flecking common to the genus. Sexual dimorphism appears slight, as in most Geophagus: the sexes are not reliably told apart externally outside of breeding, when the female's ovipositor becomes visible and males tend to be the larger, more robust fish.

Habitat

Geophagus gottwaldi is endemic to the drainage of the upper Río Orinoco in the Estado Amazonas of southwestern Venezuela, with the type series collected in the lower Río Sipapo; the Catalog of Fishes extends the documented range into the Rio Negro of Brazil, consistent with the Casiquiare connection that links the upper Orinoco to the Negro headwaters. These are Guiana-Shield blackwaters rather than the white-water Llanos to the north. The species apparently favours bare sandy bottoms among rocky areas in blackwater tributaries, and it tolerates — even prefers — sites with a remarkably strong current, an unusual trait for an eartheater. The in-situ chemistry recorded by Schindler and Staeck is striking: at one January collecting site the water ran at pH 4.5, an extremely low electrical conductivity of about 10 µS/cm, and 82 °F; the type locality on the Río Sipapo had brownish, moderately clear water at pH 5.15 and 85 °F. This is soft, acidic, mineral-poor, warm water typical of Shield blackwater. The fish is a shallow-water inhabitant of these clear-to-tea-stained sandy runs and margins, on the order of the upper metre or two of the river band rather than deep channels. Reported associates in the same waters include Aequidens sp. 'Atabapo', Biotodoma wavrini, Crenicichla sp. 'Atabapo', Laetacara sp. 'Orangeflossen', Heros severus, Mesonauta insignis, and a range of characid and catfish species.

Feeding

Like all members of its genus, Geophagus gottwaldi is an 'eartheater' — a benthophagous sand-sifter that takes mouthfuls of substrate, separates edible particles in the pharynx, and expels the cleaned sand through the gill openings and mouth. FishBase estimates a low trophic level of about 2.3, consistent with a diet built from small benthic invertebrates, organic detritus, and incidental plant and seed material winnowed from the bottom. No dedicated gut-content study of this species has been published, so the trophic picture is inferred from its anatomy and from well-studied congeners, whose stomachs typically hold chironomid larvae and other small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates alongside sediment and detritus. The bare sandy substrate it occupies in the wild is exactly the foraging surface this feeding mode requires, and the genus characteristically rises into the water column to intercept drifting food before returning to browse the bottom. In its community it functions as a generalist benthic forager of the sandy blackwater zones.

Mating

Detailed courtship has not been described for Geophagus gottwaldi specifically, and what follows is drawn from its close relatives in the genus, which are consistent in their reproductive style. Outside of breeding these are gregarious, loosely social fish that form aggregations and a dominance hierarchy; aggression escalates only as a pair prepares to spawn. Because the sexes are essentially impossible to tell apart by eye, pairs form from within a group rather than being deliberately matched. Courtship in congeners is relatively undramatic — fin-flaring, circling, gaping and head-jerking displays — after which a forming pair selects and cleans a spawning surface, most often a flat rock, a piece of wood, or simply a patch of cleared substrate, and defends the immediate area against intruders. The pair bond is cooperative but can be uneven: in some pairings the male turns on the female after spawning and drives her off to tend the brood alone, while in others he settles into guarding the surrounding territory while she carries the young.

Breeding

Wild breeding has not been documented for this species, but its placement in Geophagus and the behaviour of its relatives make the mode clear: it is a substrate-spawning, delayed (larvophilous) biparental mouthbrooder. In this strategy the female lays adhesive eggs in rows on a cleaned surface and the male fertilises them in passes, the sequence repeating over several hours; the eggs are then guarded on the substrate and, once they hatch, the parents take the larvae (the 'wrigglers') into the mouth to incubate them — the 'delayed' or larvophilous pattern, distinct from the 'immediate' mouthbrooders that scoop eggs up at spawning. Clutch sizes in comparable Geophagus run up to roughly 200 eggs. Care is shared but variable: the female commonly does most of the buccal incubation while the male holds territory, and in some pairs both adults brood, exchanging the entire brood between their mouths. In congeners reared at about 77–82 °F the fry become free-swimming roughly eight to eleven days after spawning, after which the parents release them to forage and shepherd them back into the mouth at any sign of danger, a rapid flick of the pelvic fins apparently serving as the recall signal. As the fry grow they return to the parents' mouths only at night before becoming independent. No species-specific clutch count, incubation time, or captive spawning report for Geophagus gottwaldi appears in the literature.

In the aquarium

Geophagus gottwaldi is only rarely seen in the hobby and there is little first-hand keeping literature specific to it, so husbandry advice is extrapolated from the genus — for which the requirements are well established. This is a large, current-loving eartheater, so plan for space: a tank with a base of around 180 × 23.5 in (roughly 160 US gal) is a sensible long-term minimum for a group, both to accommodate the adult size beyond 7.5 in and to let subordinate fish escape during breeding. Geophagus are gregarious and settle best bought as a group of five to eight young fish, which lets a pair form naturally and spreads aggression across the hierarchy; kept in twos or threes, weaker individuals are often bullied relentlessly.

The single non-negotiable furnishing is a deep bed of soft, fine sand. These fish feed by sifting substrate through the gills, and coarse gravel or sharp grit not only blocks that behaviour but can abrade or lodge in the gill filaments. Décor is otherwise a matter of taste — driftwood, scattered roots and branches, a few water-worn flat rocks as potential spawning sites, and subdued lighting all suit the species. Given the unusually strong current it experiences in the wild, this is one eartheater that will not object to brisk, well-oxygenated flow, though the flow should be broad rather than a narrow jet.

Water chemistry should track its blackwater origins: warm (about 79–86 °F), soft, and acidic. The wild measurements are extreme — pH 4.5–5.15 over conductivity as low as 10 µS/cm — and while captive fish do not need water that mineral-poor, they will be at their best in soft, acidic conditions (pH around 5.0–6.8) with very low hardness; hard, alkaline water is the wrong environment. Stability matters more than chasing a number: Geophagus are notably sensitive to deteriorating water quality and to sudden swings in chemistry, are prone to head-and-lateral-line erosion and stunting when neglected, and should never go into a biologically immature tank. The standard regime is heavy over-filtration plus large (50–70%) weekly water changes, with mechanical filtration tuned to cope with the cloud of fine particles the fish stir up.

Feeding is straightforward: offer a varied diet of small frozen and live foods (bloodworm, Artemia, Tubifex, mosquito larvae) and fine sinking prepared foods, ideally including some vegetable/Spirulina content, in several small portions a day so the fish can browse the sand naturally. Outside of spawning it is a peaceful, sociable cichlid that ignores anything too large to swallow, and it mixes well with other calm, soft-water South Americans of similar size; avoid hard-water species, boisterous substrate-bullies, and small fish that might be eaten. The main difficulty with this species in practice is simply availability and the lack of a documented track record — it is a fish for the experienced eartheater keeper rather than a beginner.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Geophagus gottwaldi as Data Deficient (assessed 28 October 2020 by C. Lasso; published 2023). That category reflects how little is known about the species rather than a verdict of safety: it is recorded from only a handful of localities in the upper Orinoco of Venezuela (extending, per the Catalog of Fishes, into the Brazilian Rio Negro), and there is too little information on its distribution, population, and trends to gauge extinction risk. It carries no CITES listing and is of no commercial fishery interest. The blackwater tributaries it inhabits — the Sipapo and neighbouring upper-Orinoco rivers on the Guiana Shield — remain comparatively remote and undeveloped, but the wider region faces growing pressure from gold mining (and associated mercury contamination), deforestation, and the ornamental fish trade. As a narrowly distributed, poorly documented Shield endemic, it is the kind of species most exposed to localized habitat change, and its true status will stay uncertain until its range and abundance are properly surveyed.
