Taxonomy & naming
Geophagus parnaibae was described by the German ichthyologists Wolfgang Staeck and Ingo Schindler in 2006, in the Dresden journal Zoologische Abhandlungen (volume 55, pages 69–75), under the title 'Geophagus parnaibae sp. n. — a new species of cichlid fish (Teleostei: Perciformes: Cichlidae) from the rio Parnaíba basin, Brazil.' The type series was taken from a stream called Riacho Ponti near the city of Timon, in the lower Parnaíba drainage of Maranhão state. The genus Geophagus Heckel, 1840 was rediagnosed and tightly restricted by Sven Kullander in 1986, who confined it to the species bearing paired caudal extensions of the swimbladder lined by epihemal 'ribs' — the assemblage usually called Geophagus sensu stricto. Within that genus, parnaibae belongs to the Geophagus surinamensis species group, the deep-bodied eartheaters that carry a variably sized dark blotch on each flank. Staeck and Schindler noted that it shares two unusual features with Geophagus camopiensis of the Guianas — about 30–31 scales in the E1 row and usually seven anal-fin rays, versus the higher counts of other group members — which may point to a close relationship between the two. It is distinguished from camopiensis by its smaller flank blotch, the alternating maroon-and-whitish horizontal bands in the caudal fin (rather than light spots), and usually one more dorsal-fin spine. The species had been known to German aquarists since at least 1988, imported and traded informally as 'Geophagus sp. Parnaíba' for nearly two decades before the formal description caught up with the hobby.
Morphology
This is one of the smaller eartheaters of its group. Maximum standard length is on the order of 4–4.5 in, with most references citing roughly 3–4.5 in SL; it is decidedly more compact than the 20-cm-plus altifrons and proximus that dominate the aquarium trade. The body is the typical Geophagus build — moderately deep, laterally compressed, with the steep forehead and small, low-set, downturned mouth of a dedicated substrate browser. Ground colour is a pearly silver-grey to pale brassy tan, the flanks broken by rows of small iridescent blue-green spots and scale flecks that catch the light, and marked by a single dark mid-lateral blotch. The species lacks both a dark preopercular marking and the infraorbital (suborbital) stripe seen in the 'non-surinamensis' Geophagus, which helps place it. Its signature is the caudal fin, patterned with alternating horizontal bands of maroon and whitish — a feature Staeck and Schindler used in diagnosis. Sexual dimorphism is slight: there are no reliable external differences outside of breeding, when the female's ovipositor becomes visible; mature males tend to grow somewhat larger and carry slightly more produced fin tips.
Habitat
Geophagus parnaibae is endemic to the rio Parnaíba drainage, which forms much of the border between the states of Piauí and Maranhão in northeastern Brazil and drains to the Atlantic. It has been collected widely through the system, including tributaries of the rios das Balsas, Longa and Poti. The Parnaíba is a seasonal river of the Caatinga-to-Cerrado transition, and the fish tracks that rhythm: the original description records it from smaller tributaries with bare sandy bottoms where flow can be remarkably strong during the rainy season, and from near-stagnant pools and ponds during the dry months. Field measurements taken across several collection sites between April and September put water temperature at roughly 75–88 °F, pH between about 6.5 and 7.6, and hardness in a moderate range (about 36–179 ppm, i.e. soft to medium-hard). It has been found alongside a characteristic Parnaíba-basin community including the pike cichlid Crenicichla menezesi, the dwarf cichlid Apistogramma piauiensis, the wolf-fish Hoplias malabaricus, the livebearer Micropoecilia branneri, and the cory Aspidoras raimundi, among various characins and catfishes.
Feeding
Like all true Geophagus, parnaibae is benthophagous — an 'eartheater' in the literal sense. It feeds by taking mouthfuls of sand and soft sediment, sorting edible matter from grit within the buccal cavity using specialised gill rakers and pharyngeal apparatus, then expelling the cleaned substrate through the gill openings and mouth. The natural diet, from stomach-content work on the group, is dominated by small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates together with seeds and other plant material, organic detritus and incidental sediment. This is a low-trophic-level, continual browser rather than a predator; even as an adult it is poorly equipped to handle large food items and instead grazes the bottom more or less constantly. A deep bed of fine sand is therefore not an aesthetic choice but a functional requirement — the feeding mode simply does not work over gravel, and coarse substrate can abrade the gills or be swallowed.
Mating
Geophagus parnaibae is a gregarious, loosely schooling fish that lives in aggregations outside of breeding, with juveniles showing particularly strong grouping instincts. Within a group a dominance hierarchy forms, and pairs separate out from that group when ready to spawn rather than being paired up by the keeper — accurate sexing is essentially impossible until a female drops her ovipositor. Courtship is comparatively undramatic for a cichlid: fin-flaring, circling, gaping and head-jerking displays between a forming pair, who then select and clean a spawning site. Sexual maturity comes slowly, often not until the fish are around a year old. The species is notably peaceful for its size, and away from an active nest it will not bother tankmates more than a few millimetres long; aggression is largely confined to the brief, localised territoriality of a spawning pair.
Breeding
This is one of the eartheaters whose reproductive mode bridges two strategies: it is a substrate-spawning, ovophilous, biparental delayed mouthbrooder. The pair spawns in the open in classic substrate-spawner fashion — the female laying rows of adhesive eggs on a cleaned flat rock, a piece of wood, or even the bare aquarium glass, the male following to fertilise, repeated over several hours — and then takes the eggs and larvae into the mouth for further care. Maximum brood size is around 200 eggs. Care is typically biparental but variable: in many spawns the female does most of the mouthbrooding while the male defends the surrounding territory, and the two may either brood simultaneously or exchange the entire brood between their mouths, often daily, transferring the young in a sheltered spot. At about 77–82 °F the fry become free-swimming at roughly 8–11 days, after which the parents release them to forage in increasingly long bouts, shepherding them back into the mouth at any sign of danger — a rapid flick of the pelvic fins appearing to act as the recall signal. The fry are easily raised on powdered dry foods, Artemia nauplii and microworm from first feeding.
In the aquarium
Geophagus parnaibae is a rewarding, relatively undemanding eartheater that has been bred many times in captivity, and its smaller adult size makes it more manageable than most of its congeners. A single group does best with a footprint of at least about 100 × 17.5 in; because the species is strongly social and forms hierarchies, it should be kept in a group of five to eight or more rather than as a single pair, so that aggression is diffused and the fish settle confidently. Kept in twos or threes, weaker individuals can be bullied and the group tends to behave nervously.
The single most important piece of décor is a soft, sandy substrate that lets the fish browse and dig naturally; gravel or pebbles inhibit feeding and risk gill and gut damage. Dim lighting, driftwood, scattered roots and a couple of flattish water-worn stones (which double as spawning sites) suit it well. Leaf litter, though natural, is best used sparingly because the constant sifting throws partially decomposed material into suspension and can clog filters. Water quality matters a great deal: these cichlids are sensitive to deteriorating conditions and to swings in chemistry, so they should never go into an immature tank, and they reward generous filtration plus weekly water changes on the order of 50–70 percent. Target roughly 75–86 °F, pH around 6.5–7.5 and soft-to-moderate hardness, tracking the wild figures. Feed several small portions a day of fine-grade prepared foods plus small live or frozen bloodworm, Artemia and the like, with some vegetable content. It is peaceful and pairs well with other calm, similarly sized species enjoying the same water; avoid aggressive substrate-dwellers and anything needing hard, alkaline conditions. In the trade, beware confusion with the undescribed 'Geophagus sp. Pindaré' from the neighbouring rio Pindaré, which is sometimes mislabelled in a way that conflates the two — they are distinct and not sympatric.
Conservation
Geophagus parnaibae has been assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (last assessed 2018). As an endemic of a single river basin it is more geographically restricted than the wide-ranging Amazonian eartheaters, but within the Parnaíba it is widespread and locally common, recorded from numerous tributaries across the system, and it tolerates the strongly seasonal conditions of its home waters. No basin-wide, population-level threat is documented for the species at present. The general pressures on the Parnaíba drainage — agricultural expansion through the Cerrado headwaters, water abstraction, and the localised effects of pollution and habitat alteration — form the backdrop against which its status should be watched, but it carries no CITES listing and is not the subject of any targeted fishery beyond modest collection for the ornamental trade. As with many regional endemics, the larger uncertainty is taxonomic rather than conservational: the surinamensis assemblage still contains undescribed forms, and the precise limits of Parnaíba-basin diversity are not fully resolved.
