Geophagus pirangaensis was described in 2026 by Cidimar E. de Assis, Jorge A. Dergam and Elisabeth Henschel — with co-authors including Cunha, Machado, Hrbek, Vicente and de Queiroz — in the Journal of Fish Biology, in a paper titled 'A new endemic pearl cichlid of the Geophagus brasiliensis (Cichliformes: Cichlidae) species group from the Piranga River, upper Doce River basin, southeastern Brazil.' The holotype (MZUFV 7654, a female of about 4 in SL) was collected in the middle course of the Piranga River in the municipality of Ponte Nova, Minas Gerais, and is housed in the João Moojen Zoology Museum of the Federal University of Viçosa. The authors note this is the first description of a new species of the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis group from the Doce River basin. As with the rest of that group — the Atlantic-slope pearl-cichlid lineage of eastern Brazil — the genus is conventionally written in quotation marks, because the brasiliensis assemblage falls outside Geophagus sensu stricto as restricted by Kullander (1986) and still awaits a formal genus of its own. The species was delimited using an integrative approach combining morphology with molecular data, in keeping with the modern revision of this notoriously look-alike complex (Argolo et al., 2020).
Morphology
Geophagus pirangaensis is a pearl cichlid of moderate size, with examined specimens running from a roughly 2.5 in SL subadult to adults of about 4 in SL. It has the robust, deep-bodied, large-scaled form typical of the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis group, the flanks carrying the iridescent pearly spotting that gives these fish their common name. Its defining, diagnostic feature is unusually specific: 'G.' pirangaensis is the only member of the brasiliensis group to possess clear, rounded spots in the membrane of the posteriormost dorsal-fin rays — a distinctive marking on the trailing edge of the dorsal fin that no relative shares. Beyond this signature character it is separated from its congeners by a combination of colour-pattern features and by molecular data. As is generally the case in the group, sexual dimorphism is limited and not strongly emphasised in the description; by analogy with related pearl cichlids, mature males tend to be the larger sex with somewhat more produced fins, and breeding fish intensify in colour, but the holotype itself is a female of around 4 in SL, so the sexes overlap considerably in size.
Habitat
The species is, on current knowledge, endemic to a single stretch of one river: it is known only from its type locality in the middle course of the Piranga River, in the municipality of Ponte Nova, Minas Gerais. The Piranga is a major tributary of the upper Doce River, one of the principal Atlantic-draining basins of southeastern Brazil. This places pirangaensis in the inland, upland portion of the Doce system rather than on the coastal plain — a setting of clearer, flowing headwater rivers in the rugged country of central Minas Gerais. The narrow known range reflects how little of the brasiliensis group's true diversity has been mapped, and the authors are explicit that the species is so far recorded only from the type locality. Detailed published wild water-chemistry figures specific to pirangaensis are not yet available; the upper-Doce upland-river setting implies warm to temperate, generally soft to moderately mineralised flowing water, and brasiliensis-group pearl cichlids are in any case broadly tolerant across temperature and hardness.
Feeding
As a member of the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis group, pirangaensis is an omnivorous, substrate-oriented feeder rather than the obligate sand-sifting specialist of Amazonian Geophagus sensu stricto. Pearl cichlids of this lineage forage and sift the bottom for small invertebrates, plant material, detritus and the micro-organisms in soft sediment, and the group's flagship species, 'G.' brasiliensis, is renowned as a hardy generalist that takes an extremely wide diet. No gut-content study has been published for pirangaensis specifically — it is a brand-new species — but its feeding ecology can be inferred with confidence from its close relatives: a bottom-foraging omnivore of an upland river, working sand, gravel margins and leaf litter for whatever edible matter they hold, and rising into the water column to take drifting or introduced food.
Mating
Reproduction in Geophagus pirangaensis has not been observed or described, but the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis group are pair-forming biparental substrate spawners — not mouthbrooders — and pirangaensis is expected to conform to that pattern. In the group, a male and female form a bond, jointly clean and defend a chosen spawning surface, and court with the standard cichlid repertoire of lateral displays, fin-spreading and substrate-cleaning. These pearl cichlids are seasonal, opportunistic breeders that grow territorial around a nest. Sexing outside breeding condition is difficult; in related species males average larger with longer fin extensions, while a ripe female rounds out and shows a descended ovipositor — though, as the female holotype illustrates, body size alone is not a reliable guide. As in the rest of the group, pairs are most reliably obtained by raising a group of juveniles and letting a bond form.
Breeding
There is no breeding account for Geophagus pirangaensis, so the following draws on the well-documented biology of the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis group of which it is a member. These are biparental, open or semi-open substrate spawners: the adhesive eggs are laid in rows on a cleaned flat rock, root or sand depression and fertilised by the attending male, then guarded externally by both parents — the female fanning and tending the clutch while the male defends the surrounding territory. Unlike the Amazonian Geophagus sensu stricto, the brasiliensis group does not mouthbrood; the wrigglers are moved to pits, and once free-swimming the fry are herded and protected as a school by both parents, often for an extended period. The reference point is 'G.' brasiliensis, a prolific and reliable spawner that produces large broods of several hundred fry with strong, sustained biparental care — the template against which pirangaensis's reproduction is reasonably read until direct data appear.
In the aquarium
Geophagus pirangaensis is, at the time of writing, a wild species freshly described in the scientific literature rather than an aquarium fish: it is not in the ornamental trade and there are no hobbyist breeding reports for it. Any keeping guidance comes from the broader 'Geophagus' brasiliensis group, which is one of the most forgiving of all cichlids in captivity and a reasonable proxy should the species ever become available.
Pearl cichlids of this lineage are robust and adaptable, tolerating a wide range of temperature (roughly 64–86 °F, the cooler end fitting upland Minas Gerais) and hardness, from soft to fairly hard, around neutral pH. As a moderate-sized member of the group, pirangaensis would want a roomy aquarium with a soft substrate it can sift, plus driftwood, rounded stones and a few flat surfaces to serve as territory markers and spawning sites; it is a digging, territorial cichlid. Strong filtration and regular water changes suit any substrate-stirring eartheater. Feeding is straightforward given the group's omnivory: varied sinking prepared foods, frozen and live invertebrates, and some vegetable matter. Temperament across the group runs from peaceful to fairly aggressive and sharpens around spawning, so tankmates should be robust and similarly sized, with room for a pair to hold a territory. As always with these regional endemics, the responsible course is to treat it as an upland-Doce native and prioritise stable, clean, well-oxygenated water.
Conservation
Geophagus pirangaensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List — it was described only in 2026. Its conservation context is, however, genuinely sobering, because its sole known home is the upper Doce basin: the Doce River was the site of Brazil's catastrophic 2015 Mariana (Fundão) dam-tailings disaster, when the collapse of an iron-ore tailings dam sent a vast wave of mine waste down the Doce and devastated aquatic life along hundreds of kilometres of the river system. A pearl cichlid endemic to a single tributary of that basin is, by definition, highly exposed: its entire global range can be affected by a single basin-scale event, and the Doce remains under pressure from mining, sedimentation, deforestation, urban and agricultural pollution, and altered flow. None of these is a documented, quantified threat to pirangaensis specifically, because the species is brand-new and effectively unstudied beyond its description, but the combination of a minute known range and a heavily impacted, disaster-affected basin is precisely the profile that warrants concern and a prompt formal assessment. It carries no CITES listing, and there is no collection pressure on a fish not yet in the trade.
