Geophagus pyrocephalus is the fire-headed eartheater of the lower rio Tapajós — the fish that hobbyists knew for more than thirty years as 'Geophagus sp. Tapajós red head' before it finally received a scientific name in 2022. Both sexes wear a glowing orange-to-red forehead from maturity, an unmistakable marker on an otherwise silvery, narrowly barred body. It is a true Geophagus (sensu stricto), a sand-sifting, biparental mouthbrooding eartheater of clearwater Amazonian streams, and one of the smaller and more colourful members of its genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Geophagus pyrocephalus was described in 2022 by Junior Chuctaya, Pedro Nitschke, Marcelo C. Andrade, Juliano Wingert and Luiz R. Malabarba, in the Journal of Fish Biology (volume 101, issue 6), under a title that says the quiet part out loud: 'A new species of Geophagus (Teleostei: Cichlidae): Naming a cichlid species widely known in the aquarium hobby as Geophagus sp. Tapajós red head.' The holotype (UFRGS 27400, an adult male of about 4 in SL) and paratypes come from the lower Tapajós River basin in Pará, Brazil. The genus Geophagus Heckel, 1840 was restricted by Kullander (1986) to the eartheaters bearing paired caudal swimbladder extensions — Geophagus sensu stricto — and molecular analysis in the description, sampling most South American cichlid genera, confirmed that pyrocephalus belongs squarely within that clade, close to the Geophagus altifrons and Geophagus surinamensis assemblage. Its formal description elevated the count of Geophagus sensu stricto to 21 species. The fish makes an instructive taxonomic case study: it is diagnosed almost entirely on colour — the absence of head markings, a pattern of nine vertical bars on the flanks, distinct longitudinal bands in the caudal fin, and of course the red head — backed by a cytochrome-b genetic distance of at least 2.0 percent from its nearest congeners. For decades it went unnamed precisely because science was slow to accept colour as a sole diagnostic character, demanding instead 'hard' anatomical features recognisable in faded museum specimens; pyrocephalus is part of a shift toward integrating live coloration and DNA into formal description.

Morphology

This is a medium-small eartheater, reaching about 6.5 in in total length, with the standard Geophagus architecture: a moderately deep, compressed body, a steep forehead, and a small, ventrally placed, downturned mouth built for sifting sand. The defining feature is the head colour — a vivid orange to red wash over the forehead and cheeks that appears in both sexes from the onset of sexual maturity, at around 3–4 in body length (excluding the caudal fin). Even before the head reddens, juveniles can be told apart from related Tapajós eartheaters by their narrow vertical barring: nine slim dark bars cross the silvery, blue-flecked flanks. The unpaired fins carry rows of iridescent spotting, and the caudal fin shows the distinct longitudinal bands used in the diagnosis. The head is otherwise unmarked, lacking the preopercular blotch and suborbital stripe of some congeners. Sexual dimorphism is modest and mainly a matter of finnage: males develop considerably more produced, filamentous dorsal- and anal-fin extensions, while both sexes share the red head. Outside of breeding the sexes are not always easy to separate at a glance.

Habitat

Geophagus pyrocephalus is native to the lower rio Tapajós basin in the state of Pará, northern Brazil — one of the great clearwater tributaries of the lower Amazon. The Tapajós is a classic clearwater river: relatively transparent, nutrient-poor, flowing over white sand and rock, with seasonally warm, soft, mildly acidic water. The species is a fish of these sandy-bottomed streams and river margins, where its sifting habit and the open sand it depends on are the rule. As a lower-Tapajós endemic it overlaps in range with other eartheaters of the basin — there are several Geophagus in the Tapajós, which is one reason the hobby trade resorted to nicknames like 'Tapajós I' and 'red head' to keep them apart. Typical water for the basin runs warm (roughly 79–86 °F), soft, and acidic to near-neutral, conditions that should guide both interpretation of its ecology and its care in captivity. It is reported as not at all rare within its natural biotope.

Feeding

As a Geophagus sensu stricto, pyrocephalus is a dedicated benthophage — an eartheater in the full sense. It feeds by scooping mouthfuls of sand and fine sediment, separating edible particles from grit inside the mouth, and ejecting the cleaned substrate through the gill openings. In Amazonian clearwater streams this winnowing yields small benthic invertebrates (insect larvae and microcrustaceans), seeds and plant fragments, organic detritus and the micro-organisms bound up in it. It is a continual, low-trophic-level grazer rather than a hunter of other fishes, and the small, downturned mouth and specialised gill rakers and pharyngeal mill are the tools of that trade. The dependence on a workable sand substrate is absolute: the sifting behaviour, and the natural nutrition that comes with it, simply cannot be expressed over gravel.

Mating

Geophagus pyrocephalus lives in social groups outside the spawning season, and pairs form from within a group rather than being arranged by a keeper. The recommended approach, accordingly, is to raise a group and let pairs separate out naturally as the fish mature. Courtship follows the eartheater pattern of mutual displays — fin-spreading, lateral presentation and substrate-cleaning — as a forming pair selects and prepares a spawning surface. Both sexes carry the red head year-round, so the most reliable live cue to sex is the more elaborate finnage of the male; a ripe female is recognised mainly when her ovipositor descends near spawning. Aggression is largely confined to the immediate vicinity of an active nest, and for a cichlid the species is relatively peaceable, which is part of its appeal.

Breeding

Geophagus pyrocephalus is a larvophilous biparental mouthbrooder — a two-stage strategy shared with much of the genus. The pair first spawns in the open, depositing and fertilising the eggs on a cleaned stone or similar hard surface in substrate-spawner fashion. The eggs are then guarded in place for two to three days (the interval depending on temperature) until the larvae are ready to hatch, at which point the parents gently free the wrigglers from the egg membranes with their mouths and take them up for mouthbrooding. Brood care is shared — a genuine parent family, with both male and female participating in carrying and protecting the young. Once the fry are released to forage they are shepherded as a school and recalled into the parents' mouths at any disturbance. As with related Geophagus, broods are modest in number relative to substrate-spawning cichlids, the trade-off being the high survival that mouthbrooding buys. The species is bred commercially — much of the aquarium supply is captive-raised.

In the aquarium

Long a favourite under its 'Tapajós red head' trade name, Geophagus pyrocephalus is one of the more manageable and rewarding eartheaters, and is now widely available as captive-bred stock. Its smaller adult size (to about 6.5 in) means it needs less room than the large altifrons-type eartheaters, but it is still a social, group-living fish: keep a group of five or six or more so that a hierarchy can spread aggression and pairs can form on their own. A tank with a generous footprint and plenty of open swimming space over sand is the right shape.

The non-negotiable requirement is a deep bed of soft, fine sand — without it the fish cannot feed naturally and the gills are at risk from coarse grit. Decorate with driftwood, scattered roots and a few flat stones (which serve as spawning sites), keep lighting subdued, and provide strong filtration and regular large water changes, since constant sifting keeps fine material in suspension and these clearwater cichlids are sensitive to declining water quality. Aim for warm, soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in keeping with the Tapajós: roughly 79–86 °F, low to moderate hardness, pH around 6.0–7.5. Feed several small portions daily of sinking, fine-grade prepared foods plus frozen or live invertebrates such as bloodworm and Artemia, with some vegetable content. It is peaceful enough to share a tank with other calm, similarly sized Amazonian species that enjoy the same soft, warm water; avoid boisterous or hard-water tankmates, and avoid fish small enough to be treated as food. The classic mistakes are the universal eartheater ones: gravel instead of sand, under-filtration, and keeping too few individuals so the group never settles.

Conservation

Geophagus pyrocephalus has not yet been formally evaluated on the IUCN Red List — unsurprising for a species described only in 2022. Within its native lower-Tapajós range it is reported to be common and is described as 'by no means rare' in its biotope, and the bulk of the aquarium-trade supply is captive-bred rather than wild-caught, which relieves collection pressure. That said, the Tapajós basin is under significant and growing development pressure — most prominently a series of proposed and partly built hydroelectric dams (the São Luiz do Tapajós project and others on the lower river and its tributaries), along with deforestation, mining and sedimentation in the wider catchment. Damming and the conversion of free-flowing clearwater reaches to reservoirs are exactly the kinds of change that threaten sand-bottom, current-loving eartheaters, so while no formal threatened status applies today, the species' long-term outlook is tied to the fate of a heavily contested river system. It carries no CITES listing.
