Geophagus santosi is a small pearl cichlid known only from the rio Mariana, a tiny isolated coastal river of southern Bahia in northeastern Brazil. Like its neighbours rufomarginatus and multiocellus, it belongs to the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis species group — the Atlantic-slope pearl-cichlid lineage written in quotation marks because it falls outside Geophagus proper. Described in 2018 and recognised at a glance by the blue stripes running parallel to the rays of its dorsal and anal fins, it is one more single-river endemic in a region where each short coastal drainage tends to hold its own distinct eartheater.

Taxonomy & naming

Geophagus santosi was described by José L. O. Mattos and Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2018, in Zoosystematics and Evolution (volume 94), in the same paper that introduced Geophagus rufomarginatus and Geophagus multiocellus from neighbouring Bahian rivers. The holotype (UFRJ 11765, about 4 in SL) was collected in 2014 from the rio Mariana upstream of the Cachoeira da Pancada waterfall, within the Área de Proteção Ambiental Michelin, in the municipality of Ituberá, Bahia. The specific name honours Alexandre Clístenes Alcântara Santos, a Brazilian ichthyologist and friend of the authors dedicated to the study of aquatic ecosystems of northeastern Brazil. The species belongs to the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis species group — the distinct, as-yet-unnamed lineage of pearl cichlids endemic to eastern Brazil's Atlantic-draining rivers, which sits outside Geophagus sensu stricto as restricted by Kullander (1986) and is conventionally cited with the genus in quotation marks. In the 2018 integrative analysis, santosi was recovered as an exclusive genetic lineage of the rio Mariana, falling within a clade related to 'G.' itapicuruensis (it shares with Geophagus multiocellus membership in that itapicuruensis clade), and diagnosed by both a unique colour pattern and unique nucleotide transformations.

Morphology

Geophagus santosi is a small pearl cichlid, the holotype measuring about 4 in SL, with the stout, deep-bodied, large-scaled build characteristic of the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis group and a body dusted in the iridescent pearly spots the group is named for. Its single most distinctive feature, and the basis of its diagnosis, is the colour of the median fins: santosi is set apart from all other members of the group by having blue stripes running parallel to the fin rays along the longest portions of the dorsal and anal fins. It also shares with Geophagus obscurus and Geophagus multiocellus an oblique iridescent blue zone between the humeral (shoulder) region and the front of the dorsal-fin base. As is the rule in the brasiliensis group, sexual dimorphism is not strongly marked; the description does not report pronounced external sex differences, and as in related pearl cichlids mature males tend to be the larger sex with somewhat more produced fins, while breeding fish heighten in colour.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the rio Mariana, described as an isolated small coastal river of Bahia state in northeastern Brazil. The type locality lies upstream of the Cachoeira da Pancada within the Michelin Environmental Protection Area near Ituberá, at low elevation — about 49 ft above sea level. This is the classic setting that has generated the brasiliensis group's many single-river endemics: a short, independent Atlantic-slope drainage, hydrologically isolated from its neighbours by the sea and by the intervening coastal hills, so that a resident pearl-cichlid population can diverge into its own species. The surrounding landscape is the southern-Bahian Atlantic Forest coastal plain. Published wild water-chemistry data specific to santosi are limited, but the low-elevation coastal-forest stream setting implies warm water of soft to moderate hardness; brasiliensis-group pearl cichlids are broadly tolerant of temperature and hardness in captivity, which is consistent with the variable coastal streams they occupy. That part of the Mariana's course falls within a protected area is a notable, if partial, conservation positive.

Feeding

As a member of the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis group, santosi is an omnivorous, bottom-oriented feeder rather than the obligate sand-winnowing specialist seen in Amazonian Geophagus sensu stricto. Pearl cichlids of this lineage graze and sift the substrate for small invertebrates, plant material, detritus and the micro-organisms in soft sediment, and the group's best-known member, 'G.' brasiliensis, is famous as a hardy generalist that accepts an extremely broad diet. No species-specific gut-content study has been published for santosi, but its trophic ecology can be read with confidence from its close relatives: a generalist omnivore of a small coastal stream, foraging the bottom over sand and leaf litter and rising to take drifting or introduced food. A browseable soft substrate remains relevant to its natural feeding behaviour.

Mating

Reproduction in Geophagus santosi has not been studied directly, but the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis group are pair-forming biparental substrate spawners — not mouthbrooders — and santosi is expected to follow that pattern. In the group, a male and female form a bond, jointly clean and defend a spawning surface, and court with the familiar cichlid displays of lateral presentation, fin-spreading and substrate-cleaning. These pearl cichlids are seasonal, opportunistic breeders that become territorial around a nest. Sexing outside breeding condition is difficult; in related species the male is typically the larger fish with longer fin extensions, and a ripe female rounds out and shows a descended ovipositor. As with the group generally, pairs are most reliably obtained by growing on a group of juveniles together and allowing a bond to form naturally.

Breeding

No breeding account exists for Geophagus santosi specifically, so the following reflects the well-documented biology of the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis group to which it belongs. These are biparental, open or semi-open substrate spawners: the adhesive eggs are deposited in rows on a cleaned flat rock, root or sand depression and fertilised by the attending male, then guarded externally by both parents — the female fanning and tending the clutch, the male holding the perimeter. Unlike the Amazonian Geophagus sensu stricto, the brasiliensis group does not mouthbrood; the wrigglers are transferred to pits, and once free-swimming the fry are herded and defended as a school by both parents over an extended period. The reference point is 'G.' brasiliensis, a notably prolific and dependable spawner that produces large broods of several hundred fry and shows strong, sustained biparental care — the model against which santosi's reproduction is reasonably interpreted pending direct observation.

In the aquarium

Geophagus santosi is at present a wild, recently described species rather than an aquarium staple: it is not established in the ornamental trade, and there are no hobbyist breeding reports for it specifically. Guidance therefore comes from the broader 'Geophagus' brasiliensis group, which is among the hardiest and most adaptable of all cichlids in captivity and a sound proxy for keeping this species should it become available.

Pearl cichlids of this lineage tolerate a wide span of temperature (roughly 68–86 °F) and hardness, from soft to fairly hard, around neutral pH — a reflection of the variable coastal streams they come from. As a smaller member of the group, santosi would not need the very large tank a full-grown 'G.' brasiliensis demands, but it is still a digging, territorial cichlid that wants a roomy aquarium with a soft sand substrate to sift, plus driftwood, rounded stones and a few flat surfaces as territory markers and potential spawning sites. Generous filtration and regular water changes suit any substrate-stirring eartheater. Feeding is easy given the group's omnivory: varied sinking prepared foods, frozen and live invertebrates, and some vegetable matter. Temperament across the group runs from peaceful to fairly aggressive and sharpens around spawning, so tankmates should be robust and of similar size, with enough space for a pair to hold a territory. Treat it as the coastal-Bahian endemic it is, and prioritise stable, clean water over a sandy bottom.

Conservation

Geophagus santosi has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List, as expected for a coastal-endemic cichlid described only in 2018. Its conservation situation deserves attention on principle: it is known from just one small, isolated coastal river, the rio Mariana, in the southern-Bahian Atlantic Forest — a biome that has been extensively cleared and is under continuing pressure from agriculture, urban and tourist development, and water use. A species confined to a single short drainage is intrinsically vulnerable, because one basin's worth of pollution, deforestation, abstraction or sedimentation can affect its whole global range simultaneously. A mitigating factor is that the type locality lies within the Michelin Environmental Protection Area (APA), so at least part of the species' range enjoys formal protection — a meaningful, if partial, safeguard. None of the potential threats is documented or quantified for santosi specifically, because it is too new and too little studied, but the pairing of a minuscule range with an intensively used coastal-forest landscape is the familiar profile of an at-risk Atlantic-slope endemic. There is no CITES listing and no evidence of collection pressure; a formal assessment and basic field study would be valuable.
