Hemichromis fasciatus, the banded jewelfish or five-spot cichlid, is the namesake and type species of the African jewel-cichlid genus — but it bears little resemblance to the small scarlet "jewels" of the aquarium trade. It is a deep-bodied, predatory cichlid reaching well over 8 in, marked not with red spangles but with a row of five bold dark blotches down each flank. Widespread through the rivers and floodplains of West Africa, it is a voracious ambush hunter of fishes, shrimps and insects, a biparental substrate spawner with famously ferocious territoriality, and an important food fish across its range. Among cichlid keepers it has a reputation as one of the most aggressive fish anyone can put in a tank.

Taxonomy & naming

The banded jewelfish was described by the German naturalist Wilhelm Peters in 1857 in the proceedings of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin (Monatsberichte der Königlichen Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin), based on material from "Africa occidentalis, Guinea" — a type locality that Loiselle (1979) refined to Ghana. The name was published in its current combination, Hemichromis fasciatus, and the species is the type of the genus Hemichromis, which Peters erected in the same work; the syntype series is split between the Berlin museum (ZMB 4287) and the Naturalis collection at Leiden (RMNH 2278). The name has stood unchallenged as valid for more than a century and a half, recognized through the standard West African ichthyological treatments (Lévêque, Paugy and Teugels in the Faune des poissons d'eaux douces… series; Daget & Teugels; Trape 2018; Lamboj & Koblmüller 2022). Within the family Cichlidae it sits in the African subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. Hemichromis is informally split into two groups: the small, brilliantly red "jewel cichlids" of the bimaculatus/guttatus complex sold in the hobby, and the larger, banded, piscivorous "five-spot" or fasciatus group, to which this species belongs alongside Hemichromis elongatus, Hemichromis frempongi and a handful of others. The boundary between Hemichromis fasciatus and the closely similar Hemichromis elongatus has long been a source of confusion; recent work (Bitja-Nyom et al. 2021) holds that true Hemichromis fasciatus is the West African form, separable by a higher count of anal-fin soft rays and longitudinal-line scales and by small black dots between the first dark bars on the flanks, while Hemichromis elongatus occupies Lower Guinea and the Congo basin. Because of this overlap, older distribution records that lump the two should be read with caution.

Morphology

Hemichromis fasciatus is a robust, laterally compressed cichlid with a fairly elongate, fusiform body and a pointed, predatory head; the upper profile of the snout is straight to slightly concave. Reported maximum size depends on the water body and on whether length is given as standard length (SL, snout to tail base) or total length (TL): FishBase cites a maximum of about 8.5 in SL with a recorded maximum of 10.5 in TL and a published weight of 300 g, while the standard West African reference (Lévêque & Paugy 2006) gives 8 in (about 8 in) SL; wild river populations are usually smaller, with most fish in heavily fished streams maturing at 3.5–4.5 in. The diagnostic feature, and the source of both common names, is a series of five dark blotches or vertical bars along each side, often alternating with narrower intercalary bars: the first blotch merges with a dark spot on the gill cover and the fifth sits at the base of the tail. Ground colour ranges from olive-brown to a warm reddish or brassy tone that intensifies dramatically in breeding fish, when the lower body and fins can flush deep wine-red and carry a scatter of iridescent blue-green flecks — a muted echo of the gaudy "jewel" dress of its smaller relatives. Juveniles lack the red and instead show a cryptic banded pattern; stressed adults likewise fade their colour and reassert the dark interstitial bars. Sexual dimorphism is modest: males grow somewhat larger, while ripe females become noticeably deeper- and rounder-bodied as the ovaries fill. The fin counts run to roughly 13–15 dorsal spines, 11–14 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines and 8–11 anal soft rays.

Habitat

The banded jewelfish is one of the most widely distributed cichlids in Africa, recorded from most of the major hydrographic basins of West Africa — from the Senegal in the northwest, through the coastal rivers of the Guinean and Nigerian seaboard, to the middle and lower Chad basin — as well as the Nile basin and, in older accounts, the upper Zambezi. Its true eastern and southern limits are clouded by historical confusion with Hemichromis elongatus, and FishBase notes that the species is probably absent from the Congo basin proper. It is an ecological generalist, found in both forest and savannah biotopes and tolerant of a wide chemical envelope, which is much of why it is so successful: it occupies clear permanent floodplain lagoons, the littoral margins of rivers and lakes, streams, swamps, estuaries and even brackish coastal waters. In the Okpara Stream of northern Benin it dominated the fish community (nearly 30% of individuals) across water that ranged from roughly 77–86 °F, with pH from about 6.4 to 8.1, dissolved oxygen as low as 0.4 mg/L in places, and depths from a few tens of centimetres in vegetated margins out to deep open-water pools. In the River Orogodo of the Niger Delta it was again the single most abundant cichlid, peaking in the rainy season. FishBase lists a preferred temperature band of roughly 73–77 °F and a hardness tolerance up to about 15 dH, with pH typically neutral to alkaline; field measurements show it comfortably spanning soft, acidic to hard, alkaline conditions. Spawning fish use shallow, sheltered shelves — eggs are laid at depths of only 4–8 in — so the documented habitat depth for the species is essentially the shoreline shallows out to a few metres.

Feeding

Hemichromis fasciatus is, above all, a predator — a piscivore whose elongate, large-mouthed build is adapted for ambushing and seizing other fishes. FishBase and the West African literature describe it feeding on shrimps, small fishes and insects, and field workers repeatedly single it out as a voracious carnivore that takes the young of other species, including tilapias, characins and killifishes, and even its own fry; its barred flank pattern has been suggested to mimic that of the cichlid Tilapia (Pelmatolapia) mariae, whose juveniles are a frequent prey. It is, however, an opportunistic rather than an obligate fish-eater. A detailed stomach study in the River Orogodo (Meye & Ikomi 2011) found chironomid (midge) larvae, mayfly nymphs, detritus, fish fry, mosquito larvae and beetles dominating the diet, with shrimps, fish scales, plant material and several kinds of algae taken as secondary items; the fish fed across the whole water column and both by day and, more intensely, by night. The picture that emerges is of a generalist carnivore that leans heavily on small fish and aquatic insects but readily switches to detritus and plant matter when its preferred prey is scarce, especially in the dry season. Its trophic level is estimated near 3.2. In African fisheries it is valued precisely for this appetite: it has been deliberately stocked as a predator to control overcrowded, stunted tilapia populations.

Mating

Reproduction in the banded jewelfish revolves around the formation of a strongly bonded monogamous pair and the defence of a large breeding territory. The species is famous among observers for the sheer size of the area it commands — FishBase notes that it holds even larger swaths of territory than the related Hemichromis elongatus — and for the intensity with which it does so. Pair formation is a tense affair: the two fish display, lock jaws and test one another, and a mismatch easily turns lethal, since this is an animal built and wired to drive intruders out of a wide radius. Pair bonds, once settled, are well defined, with both partners participating in territorial defence in the run-up to spawning. Hobbyist accounts of captive pairs describe behaviour that maps neatly onto the wild template: a male and female that will not tolerate each other until genuinely ready to breed, a female that colours up and begins moving sand and shaking her head as she becomes receptive, and a sudden shift of roles once eggs are fertilized — the female becoming hyper-aggressive and even driving the male away from the immediate nest, apparently treating him as an intruder when he ventures too close, while he patrols the territory's outer edge. This complex, volatile territoriality is the defining feature of the species' social life and the reason it is so demanding to pair.

Breeding

Hemichromis fasciatus is a biparental, open-substrate (nesting) spawner, not a mouthbrooder. The female cleans a hard surface — a stone, a submerged root or piece of wood — in a sheltered spot out of the current, and deposits her adhesive eggs there at a shallow depth, typically only 4–8 in of water (Daget 1956). It breeds primarily in the early rains and through the wet and flood seasons, when rising water and food abundance trigger spawning; in the well-studied Okpara Stream population, however, ripe fish were present in every month, and the species is a multiple (batch) spawner that reproduces year-round with peaks during the floods. Fecundity is comparatively low for a cichlid of its size: batch counts in Okpara Stream ranged from 113 to 1,716 oocytes (mean about 857), with eggs averaging around 0.5 in in diameter; in Côte d'Ivoire a maximum near 2,500 eggs has been recorded. Length at first maturity is early and small — about 3.5 in TL in females and 4.5 in in males — part of a life-history strategy that sits between classic "r" and "K" selection but tilts toward "r," offsetting modest egg numbers with intensive care. Parental care is, by cichlid standards, highly developed: both parents guard and fan the eggs, then shepherd the free-swimming fry, and they continue to escort and defend the brood until the young reach roughly 1 in (in introduced fish in Austria, care was reported to last four to eight weeks). The combination of low fecundity, early maturation, year-round multiple spawning and devoted biparental care underlies the species' ecological success and its tendency to dominate the waters it colonizes.

In the aquarium

The banded jewelfish has a long history in the hobby and is occasionally bred, but it is strictly a specialist's fish, and its single defining husbandry problem is aggression. Experienced keepers of the "five-spot" Hemichromis rate Hemichromis fasciatus as the most belligerent of the group — on an informal 1-to-10 scale, one breeder ranked the related Hemichromis elongatus and Hemichromis frempongi at 6–7 and Hemichromis fasciatus at "15." It is not a community fish in any conventional sense. A full-grown fish approaches 10 in and will kill or batter almost anything it can corner, including, often enough, its own intended mate.

Tank size should be generous: a four-foot (≈47 in) tank can grow out juveniles or pair small fish, but a six-foot (≈71 in) tank of 180 gallons or more is the realistic minimum for a settled adult pair, giving each fish room to hold territory and retreat. Décor matters as much as volume. The proven layout uses fine sand, driftwood and rocks for spawning, with a large piece of wood or rock positioned to break the line of sight across the tank — without that visual barrier, the hyper-aggressive post-spawning female tends to hunt down the male and the spawn is lost. Plants are difficult to keep anchored against a fish that rearranges its surroundings. Filtration should be robust and over-specified, but flow kept gentle and directed to agitate the surface rather than blast the spawning corner, since these fish choose the calmest water in the tank to breed.

Pairing is the central challenge. Keepers report several working methods: dividing the tank and only removing the divider days after both fish show spawning behaviour; introducing a much larger, equally tough "target" fish (oscars, red devils and the like, always well oversized) to absorb and redirect the male's aggression; or deliberately overstocking the tank so that no single territory can be held, which dissipates aggression until a pair forms. Whatever the method, moving décor or disturbing the tank after a bond forms tends to break it and trigger violence, so the setup is best left untouched. Water chemistry is undemanding — the species thrives across roughly pH 6.5–8.0, moderate hardness and temperatures of about 75–82 °F — which is the least of a keeper's worries. Feeding is easy: it takes pellets, and relishes meaty live and frozen foods, but its appetite for tankmates, not its appetite for food, is what defines life with this fish. For all but the most committed keeper, a single specimen or a hard-won, well-matched pair in a large species tank is the only sensible way to keep it.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Hemichromis fasciatus as Least Concern (assessed 21 April 2019, published 2020, by Lalèyè, Azeroual, Bousso and Getahun), reflecting its enormous range across West Africa and beyond, its broad ecological tolerance and its abundance in many waters. The population trend is listed as unknown. The assessment names overfishing, and the loss of dry-season refuges and rapids to development and dam construction, as the pressures most relevant to the species, but none rises to a level that threatens it globally; it carries no CITES or CMS listing and is harmless to people. It is, in fact, a fish that profits from human-modified waters: it is an important subsistence and commercial food fish, is raised in aquaculture, is traded as an ornamental, and has been introduced both deliberately (as a tilapia-control predator) and accidentally well outside its native range, with established or recorded populations in a hot-spring stream in Austria, in Hong Kong, and as an invasive in the Caribbean. A note of caution applies to its mapped range and country list: because Hemichromis fasciatus has long been confounded with Hemichromis elongatus, some peripheral records — particularly in the Congo basin and parts of Central and southern Africa — may pertain to that species or to as-yet-unresolved forms, and the true distribution of the West African banded jewelfish is narrower and better defined than the broadest historical accounts suggest.
