Taxonomy & naming
Iranocichla persa was described in 2016 by Hamid Reza Esmaeili and Golnaz Sayyadzadeh of Shiraz University together with the Swiss cichlid evolutionist Ole Seehausen, in the open-access journal ZooKeys (vol. 636, pp. 141-161). The holotype, an 3.5 in-standard-length male catalogued as ZM-CBSU IP66, was collected from the Shur River about 19 mi east of Bandar Abbas in Hormuzgan Province on 12 March 2013; paratypes came from the same river and from the Khorgo (Khorgu) hot spring to the northeast, with additional material from the Rudan River in the Minab system. The genus Iranocichla had stood as monotypic since Brian Coad erected it in 1982 for Iranocichla hormuzensis, and for three decades that single fish was regarded as the only cichlid in Iran. Genetic work changed the picture: mitochondrial analyses (Schwarzer et al. 2016) recovered two reciprocally monophyletic lineages — a Mehran River clade (hormuzensis) and a clade spanning the Shur, Rudan and Kol drainages diagnosable by fixed mutations in the ND2, D-loop and COI markers. Esmaeili and colleagues formalized the orange-breasted populations of that second clade as Iranocichla persa. The split is not without dispute: a 2020 checklist by Jouladeh-Roudbar and coauthors treated persa as a synonym of hormuzensis, but Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and subsequent Iranian checklists continue to list it as valid. Genetically intermediate populations from the Kol River, sandwiched between the two species' ranges, were left unnamed as 'Iranocichla sp. Kol', and remain a live taxonomic question. The genus name combines Iran, where these fish are endemic, with cichla, the root of the family name; the epithet persa honours Persia, the ancient name of Iran.
Morphology
Iranocichla persa is a small, fusiform cichlid of fairly ordinary build, reaching about 4 in — the largest measured specimen was a male of 4 in standard length, while FishBase lists a maximum of 3 in total length from a separate sample, so adults are best described as roughly hand-length fish in the 3–4 in range. The fins carry 14-17 dorsal spines and 9-10 soft dorsal rays, three anal spines and 6-8 anal soft rays. Outside the breeding season the two Iranocichla species are nearly impossible to tell apart on body shape or fin counts; the diagnosis rests almost entirely on the nuptial coloration of males. In breeding dress a male Iranocichla persa develops a bright orange breast and lower head, where hormuzensis turns black, and the flank background is grey washed with an orange hue rather than solid black. Each flank scale bears an iridescent patch, and in persa these reflective patches are enlarged, occupying more area than the dark interspaces between them. Two further tail-and-fin marks separate it: the dark 'Tilapia-spot' in the soft dorsal fin is poorly developed or absent (it is distinct in hormuzensis), and clear white spots line up into almost wavy bars or stripes across the caudal fin, a feature largely lacking in its sister. Females and non-breeding fish are a plainer mottled grey-brown, and the sexual dimorphism that defines the species is itself the most reliable field character.
Habitat
The species is endemic to a narrow strip of southern Iran, occurring in the Shur, Hasanlangi and Minab (including the Rudan) river drainages that flow into the Persian Gulf at the Strait of Hormuz in Hormuzgan Province. This is some of the harshest fish habitat in the cichlid world: a hot, arid coastal plain where streams run warm, mineral-rich and often brackish, and where summer flow can dwindle to isolated pools before the winter rains return. Part of the type series came from the Khorgo hot spring, underscoring that Iranocichla tolerates — and in places depends on — geothermal and saline waters that exclude most other freshwater fish. The original description gives geographic localities but little in-situ chemistry; field observations on the closely related Iranocichla hormuzensis describe very slow-flowing, shallow reaches less than about 12 in deep over beds of sand, pebbles and scattered rubble lightly coated with algae, with water that is warm, hard and variably salt-laden, sometimes fed by sulfurous springs. Both Iranocichla species are best understood as eurythermal and euryhaline shallow-water fish of these warm coastal drainages, holding to quiet margins and spring-fed pools rather than open or fast water.
Feeding
No gut-content study of Iranocichla persa specifically has been published, and FishBase carries only a modelled trophic level of about 3.2 for the species. The feeding ecology is inferred from its close relative and from genus-level accounts: Iranocichla are grazers of the thin algal and detrital film coating stones and sediment in their shallow streams, working diatoms, filamentous algae and organic detritus off the substrate by scraping. They are best read as omnivorous aufwuchs-feeders that also take small invertebrates, a generalist bottom-oriented diet well suited to the productive, sun-warmed shallows they inhabit. In their depauperate desert-stream communities — shared with a handful of cyprinids such as Garra and Cyprinion and the toothcarp Aphanius — Iranocichla occupies the role of the resident grazing cichlid, the same broad niche filled by tilapiine and haplochromine relatives across Africa.
Mating
Detailed courtship has not been documented for Iranocichla persa in the wild, but the genus follows the familiar mouthbrooder pattern and field notes on Iranocichla hormuzensis give a clear picture of the likely behaviour. Breeding males become territorial and brightly coloured — in persa flushing orange across the breast and head — and defend nesting space on shallow stream beds; in hormuzensis, males excavate clusters of shallow pits a metre or so apart and display from them, with the dark territorial male and his black-spotted dorsal fin advertising to passing, paler females. Courtship is a visual affair built around the male's nuptial dress and his nest, and the whole reproductive system is organized around the female's mouth as the nursery. Whether persa males build pit-nests as elaborately as hormuzensis is not yet recorded, but the close relationship makes a similar lek-like, male-display mating system the reasonable expectation.
Breeding
Iranocichla persa is a maternal mouthbrooder: one of the paratypes was a female collected with eggs in her mouth from the Khorgo hot spring, confirming the mode directly. After spawning, the female takes the fertilized eggs into her buccal cavity and carries them there through incubation and the early free-swimming stage, releasing the fry to forage and gathering them back at any threat — the classic strategy that lets cichlids breed successfully in unstable, predator-rich shallows. Clutch size has not been counted for persa; in the sister species Iranocichla hormuzensis, a maternal mouthbrooder of similar size, females are reported to brood up to about 38 large eggs, which is the best available genus-typical estimate. Females of the Iranian cichlids are noted to carry eggs around March, coinciding with the post-winter-rain window when the streams are fuller and warmer. Parental care is entirely by the mouthbrooding female; males contribute territory and courtship but not direct brood care. The species has not been bred in captivity.
In the aquarium
Iranocichla persa is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It has never entered the ornamental trade, and the original description offered no husbandry data, leaving keepers nothing to work from directly. Its sister species, Iranocichla hormuzensis, has occasionally been kept by a few dedicated enthusiasts, and their experience is the only realistic guide: the fish proved a genuine challenge, with some aquarists reporting success only in hard, mineral-rich or distinctly saline water and others managing in plain hard freshwater, suggesting a euryhaline animal that resents soft, acidic conditions. Any attempt to keep persa would have to mirror its wild envelope — warm water (these are subtropical fish of sun-baked Hormuzgan streams, comfortable through the mid-20s to low-30s Celsius), hard and alkaline chemistry around pH 7.0-8.5, and the option of added marine salt, since hobbyists have likened the genus's needs to those of the soda cichlids (Alcolapia) of East Africa's extreme lakes. A spacious, well-filtered tank with a sand-and-rock bed, open grazing surfaces and stable warmth would be the sensible template, and as a small, territorial mouthbrooder it would suit a single-species setup rather than a community. None of this is tested for persa, and prospective keepers should treat everything here as extrapolation from a close relative, not established practice.
Conservation
Iranocichla persa has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List — its status is Not Evaluated — and it carries no CITES or CMS listing. That silence is itself a concern, because the fish is a narrow-range endemic confined to a few small, warm coastal drainages in Hormuzgan Province, exactly the kind of distribution that leaves a species exposed. Its sister, the better-studied Iranocichla hormuzensis, has drawn warnings of habitat loss in the same region, with field workers pointing to bridge and embankment construction, river-bed and bank manipulation, sand harvesting, and accumulating refuse along the streams as active threats, and Iranian conservation authorities have flagged the genus as deserving of protected attention. The arid southern-Iran climate adds a natural squeeze: these drainages already run low and saline in summer, and intensified water extraction, drought and the disruption of the seasonal flood pulse could readily isolate or extirpate small populations. As a microendemic restricted to a handful of streams and springs, Iranocichla persa should be regarded as potentially vulnerable pending a formal assessment, even though no quantitative population data yet exist.
