Taxonomy & naming
The konye was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1962, in her monograph on the fishes of the crater lakes of the northwestern Cameroons (Bonner Zoologische Beiträge 13), as Tilapia eisentrauti. The holotype (BMNH 1961.10.18.11), now in the Natural History Museum, London, came from Lake Barombi-ma-Mbu — the older spelling of Barombi Mbo, sometimes rendered 'Elephant Lake'; four paratypes were also designated, three in London and one in the Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig in Bonn. In the same work Trewavas erected the new genus Konia for the species, making eisentrauti its type. Konia today contains just two species, both endemic to Barombi Mbo: Konia eisentrauti and the deep-water Konia dikume Trewavas, 1972. The genus is one of four — alongside Stomatepia, Pungu and Myaka — that occur nowhere but this one lake; the fifth Barombi genus, Sarotherodon, also reaches the surrounding rivers. All of the lake's cichlids form a single monophyletic lineage of oreochromine (formerly 'tilapiine') cichlids nested close to the riverine Sarotherodon galilaeus, and molecular work by Schliewen and colleagues has made Barombi Mbo a textbook example of cichlids that diversified in sympatry inside an isolated basin. Konia eisentrauti has remained the valid name and combination since Teugels (1991) and Stiassny et al. (2007) confirmed the genus.
Morphology
Konia eisentrauti is a small, fusiform cichlid; FishBase records a maximum of about 3.5 in total length, and hobbyist accounts of larger aquarium specimens (6–7 in) almost certainly conflate it with the more robust congeners and should be treated with caution. The body is unremarkable in shape — a generalized oreochromine with an evenly rounded snout descending to a nearly horizontal mouth, and a narrow interorbital space measuring roughly a quarter of the head length. The fin counts run to fifteen or sixteen dorsal spines with ten to eleven soft rays, three anal spines with eight or nine soft rays, and twenty-nine vertebrae. Colour is muted: a brassy-to-olive ground with an upper series of dark blotches paralleling the dorsal outline and an irregular black band running from the gill-cover spot back to the front of the caudal peduncle, where a vertical blotch meets its mirror over the top of the tail base. The fins are essentially colourless, and the dark 'tilapia spot' of many relatives is absent. Trewavas separated the genus partly on the lower pharyngeal jaw, which in Konia is only slightly longer than wide, with a toothed area of distinctive shape and three regular rows of teeth — features that reflect a soft, generalist diet rather than the heavy mollusc-crushing mill of some cichlids. Sexual dimorphism is slight: males grow somewhat larger, and the surest external difference appears only at spawning, when the female's genital papilla swells conspicuously broader and larger than the male's.
Habitat
Lake Barombi Mbo is a roughly circular volcanic crater lake about 2 mi in diameter, lying at around 984 ft above sea level near the town of Kumba in southwestern Cameroon. It is small — an open-water area near 2–3 mi² — but deep, with a mean depth of about 226 ft and a maximum of roughly 364 ft, and at least a million years old, dated by the most recent lava flow into the basin. With no significant inflowing river and only a steep, dammed outflow, the lake is hydrologically all but closed, and like many deep tropical crater lakes it is strongly and persistently stratified: a warm, oxygenated surface layer sits over cold, dark, oxygen-poor deep water that is effectively uninhabitable to most fish. The cichlid flock is therefore packed into a thin upper stratum, and the genus Konia neatly splits that space — Konia eisentrauti lives in the well-lit, oxygen-rich shallows and open upper water, while its sister Konia dikume specializes in the cooler, low-oxygen depths and carries an unusually high blood-haemoglobin load to do so. FishBase gives an environmental temperature band of about 77–81 °F for the konye; the surface waters are warm, near-neutral to mildly alkaline, and the lake is noted for seasonal plankton blooms that drive much of the food web. Because the whole species exists within this single small caldera, its entire habitat can be described in a paragraph — and that is precisely the source of its conservation risk.
Feeding
The konye is a generalist that feeds across several food sources rather than specializing. Wild diet studies and FishBase summarize it as taking algae, small insects (including larvae) and fish eggs, and the lake's recurring plankton blooms supply a further pulse of food that most of the flock exploits. FishBase places it near a trophic level of 3.6, consistent with an opportunist that mixes plant, invertebrate and animal items. Its most striking feeding behaviour, though, is kleptoparasitism. In a 1988 study, Dominey and Snyder documented that six of the eleven Barombi cichlids — Konia eisentrauti among them — steal food from the lake's freshwater crabs (Potamon africanus), darting in to snatch items the crabs have gathered or disturbed. Reported instances of food-stealing are exceedingly rare in fishes, which makes the Barombi flock, and the konye within it, an unusual natural laboratory for the behaviour. Within the community the konye occupies the role of an adaptable mid-water and near-shore forager, neither a top predator nor a narrow specialist, taking advantage of whatever the productive surface layer offers.
Mating
Outside of breeding the konye is a peaceable, somewhat retiring fish, and pairs form without the sustained aggression seen in many substrate-spawning cichlids. Aquarium observations summarized by Lamboj (2004) describe a quiet pre-spawning phase: for a few days before spawning the two partners stay close together for much of the time, and immediately before the act the female's genital papilla becomes clearly visible — much broader and larger than the male's — the single most reliable cue to her readiness. Males are reported to be non-aggressive toward females that are not yet in condition, which is why hobbyist breeders find that the limiting step is conditioning the female rather than managing male violence. There is no elaborate nest-building or lek; pairing is brief and understated, and the reproductive interest centres on the mouthbrooding that follows rather than on any prolonged courtship display.
Breeding
Konia eisentrauti is an ovophilic (egg-brooding) maternal-leaning mouthbrooder with an unusual twist: either sex can incubate. Both male and female have been observed taking the eggs into the mouth, although females are markedly the more successful brooders, and hobbyists report that neither sex is an especially reliable holder by the standards of other mouthbrooding cichlids — a reason captive breeders often strip the eggs and hatch them artificially. The eggs are large, as is typical of mouthbrooders that trade clutch size for parental investment; precise wild fecundity has not been published for this species, but congeneric and related Barombi mouthbrooders produce small clutches on the order of a few dozen large eggs. Brooding lasts roughly three weeks (about 22–26 days to free-swimming young in aquaria); during this period the carrying fish becomes shy and lies quietly near the bottom in secluded spots. Once the fry are free-swimming they normally do not return to the parent's mouth, and the comparatively large young can take crushed flake or newly hatched brine shrimp at once and grow quickly. Care therefore ends early, after the in-mouth phase, rather than extending into a long period of guarding free-swimming fry.
In the aquarium
The konye is a specialist hobbyist's fish rather than a shop staple: it is rarely offered for sale, has little colour to recommend it to casual keepers, and is usually obtained only through breeders or dedicated importers. Those who keep it find it undemanding. It is shy and peaceful, appreciates swimming room and a well-structured tank with plenty of cover, and is best given a footprint generous for its modest size so it can retreat. Water should be warm (roughly 75–82 °F) and near-neutral to mildly alkaline, mirroring the surface of its crater lake; it is not a soft-water specialist. Feeding presents no difficulty — the konye accepts almost anything and is particularly fond of small live or frozen foods such as daphnia and baby brine shrimp, which it picks out of the water column, and a varied diet keeps it in condition.
Two cautions matter. First, because all of the Barombi Mbo cichlids descend from a single recent ancestor, they hybridize readily in captivity; the konye should never be housed with congeners or with other lake species similar enough to cross with it, and conservation-minded keepers maintain strict single-species or visibly distinct combinations (pairing it only with clearly different genera such as Stomatepia, for example). Second, this is a CARES Priority / Critically Endangered species whose entire wild population sits in one fragile lake, so captive lines have real conservation value: keepers should breed it deliberately, keep accurate records, and avoid letting the aquarium strain become muddied by hybridization. Breeding itself is not difficult once a female is conditioned, but the brooding fish hold unreliably, so many keepers artificially incubate stripped eggs to secure a spawn.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Konia eisentrauti as Critically Endangered (criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)), assessed by T. Moelants on 16 February 2009 and published in 2010, with the population trend listed as unknown. The status follows almost entirely from geography: the species is confined to a single small crater lake, so its extent of occurrence and area of occupancy are minute, and any decline in the quality of that one habitat threatens the whole species at once. The lake lies beside the rapidly growing town of Kumba, and the documented pressures are local but real — artisanal fishing, agricultural deforestation and soil erosion on the steep crater slopes, and the damming of the outflow to stabilize the water level, all noted in the conservation literature on Barombi Mbo since the early 1990s. A rarer but graver hazard is geological: deep Cameroonian crater lakes can undergo limnic eruptions or sudden upwellings of anoxic, gas-charged bottom water, and turbidity events with fish die-offs (including of the deep-water Konia dikume) were reported at Barombi Mbo in 2007 and 2009. No catastrophic decline of the konye itself has been demonstrated, but in a lake this small and this isolated the margin for error is thin, which is why the species is also a flagship of the CARES conservation-priority programme and why captive-bred lines are valued. It carries no CITES or CMS listing and is harmless to humans.
