Taxonomy & naming
Lamprologus markerti was described by Stephanie Tougas and Melanie L. J. Stiassny in 2014, in the journal Zootaxa (3852(3): 391–400), from material collected in the lower Congo River between 2002 and 2008. The holotype — an adult male of 3.5 in standard length, catalogued as AMNH 238601 at the American Museum of Natural History — was taken from the Congo River opposite Matadi, at the confluence with the Lufu River, by R. Schelly and colleagues in July 2005. Paratypes are lodged at the AMNH, the Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale (MRAC), the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ) and the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology (ZSM). The genus Lamprologus was erected in 1891 by the Dutch zoologist Louise Schilthuis for Lamprologus congoensis from Stanley (Malebo) Pool, and after a long history of taxonomic inflation — in which dozens of Lake Tanganyika cichlids were placed in it — it is now restricted, following Stiassny's 1997 work, to the riverine lamprologines of the Congo basin. Within that strict sense it contains nine recognized species, of which markerti is the most recently named. Tougas and Stiassny showed that Lamprologus markerti had previously been conflated with Lamprologus tigripictilis (itself described only in 2004 by Schelly and Stiassny) and with Lamprologus werneri, and they separated it on a suite of characters: the possession of 4–6 broad dark bars on the flanks rather than 7–10 narrow ones, fewer gill rakers on the first arch (9–11 versus 12–17), a longer head and predorsal length, 14 rather than 15 precaudal vertebrae, the absence of a second intestinal loop present in its congeners, and a highly reduced infraorbital (sub-eye) bone series often consisting only of the lachrymal.
Morphology
Lamprologus markerti is a small cichlid: the type series reaches a maximum recorded 4 in (about 4 in) standard length in a mature male, with most specimens considerably smaller. The body is relatively shallow and elongate (body depth 20.2–24.8% of standard length), greatest at the first dorsal-fin spine, with a long head (32.1–34.7% of standard length), a prominent snout and well-developed fleshy lips. The forehead rises at a 40–50° angle to mid-eye and then more steeply to the nape; large, dominant males develop a conspicuous fat-filled nuchal hump. The dorsal fin carries XVI–XVIII spines and 7–8 soft rays, the anal fin IV–VI spines and 5–7 rays, and the soft portions of both draw out into tapering filamentous tips that reach to about the middle of the large, paddle-shaped caudal fin — longer in males than in females. Eight enlarged, recurved, forward-pointing canines sit at the front of each jaw, backed by bands of smaller pointed teeth, the dentition of an insectivore rather than a scraper. In life, mature males are a mauve-grey shading to pale silver below, with a turquoise reflective streak running under the eye and across the gill cover, flank scales sharply ringed in dark pigment, and four or five evenly spaced dark vertical bars that begin at the dorsal-fin base but stop short of the belly; the dorsal, anal and caudal fins carry rows of pale-and-dark spots. Preserved fish fade to creamy brown with the same bar pattern. Sexual dimorphism is clear: males grow larger, carry the longer fin filaments and the larger nuchal hump, and show bolder fin spotting, while females and juveniles are plainer.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the lower Congo River, occupying roughly a 100-kilometre reach from the region of Nziya village just below the Inga Rapids downstream to the head of the short Congo estuary near Boma, all within Bas-Congo (Kongo Central) Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This places it within the Lower Congo Rapids freshwater ecoregion, a 350-kilometre stretch in which the river drops some 280 metres between Malebo Pool and Matadi through one of the most turbulent reaches of any river on Earth — alternating between narrow gorges and broader runs, all swiftly flowing, with strong currents and high turbidity. Unlike some of its specialist neighbours, Lamprologus markerti is described as a habitat generalist, taken over a range of substrates from marginal riffle and rock near the rapids to stiller water over sand and mud. Like other riverine Lamprologus it shows the morphological signature of life in fast water, including a reduced swim bladder that helps it stay near the bottom in current. No detailed in-situ chemistry has been published specifically for this species; the lower Congo as a whole is warm, soft, near-neutral to mildly acidic blackish-to-turbid water, and aquarium guidance for the genus assumes that envelope. Because it lives in shallow marginal habitats as well as the channel, its working depth is best given as the shallow inshore band of a few metres rather than the great depths (over 656 ft) that some of its congeners, such as the blind Lamprologus lethops, are known from.
Feeding
Lamprologus markerti is an insectivore. Its dentition — strong anterior canines backed by bands of fine unicuspid teeth — and its short, simple gut (the unraveled intestine measures only about 40–50% of standard length, with a single loop) are those of a fish that takes aquatic invertebrates and other small animal prey rather than one that processes algae or detritus in bulk. FishBase places its estimated trophic level near 3.9, consistent with a carnivorous diet, though this figure is modelled from relatives rather than measured from gut contents. In the wild it presumably gleans insect larvae and other benthic invertebrates from the rocks, riffle and soft sediments of its generalist habitat, the same broad foraging strategy reported across the riverine Lamprologus, which are uniformly described as insectivorous with short intestines. Detailed dietary analysis specific to Lamprologus markerti has not been published.
Mating
Nothing has been published on the courtship or pair formation of Lamprologus markerti specifically; what can be said draws on the well-documented behaviour of its close riverine congeners, which the species is very likely to share. Riverine Lamprologus are monogamous and form stable pair bonds. Partners rarely occupy the same cave or hiding place but stay close to one another, defending a shared territory. As breeding approaches, the colour pattern darkens — in several species, particularly the females, the fish can turn almost entirely black — and the better-developed nuchal hump and longer fin filaments of dominant males advertise condition. In keeping with the genus, the female plays the leading role in tending the spawn while the male is more involved in guarding the wider territory.
Breeding
Reproduction has not been observed in the wild for any Lamprologus, and Lamprologus markerti has yet to be bred in captivity in any documented account, so its breeding biology is inferred from the riverine congeners that have spawned in aquaria. Those species are cave-brooders (substrate spawners that lay in a sheltered cavity): the female deposits a clutch of small whitish eggs on the roof or wall of a cave or crevice and tends them while the male holds the surrounding territory. Clutches in the genus are modest — up to about 400 eggs for a large female, and likely fewer for a small species such as this one. The eggs hatch in roughly three days and the wrigglers, which are cryptically coloured to match the substrate, remain in the cave until they absorb their yolk sacs and become free-swimming about six to seven days after hatching. The pair guards the fry actively for the first week or so; thereafter the parents tend to shift from leading the brood to simply defending the territory in which the young forage, and the juveniles disperse some four to six weeks after spawning. Whether Lamprologus markerti follows this pattern exactly is unknown, but its anatomy and close relationships make a cave-brooding, female-tended mode the strong expectation.
In the aquarium
Lamprologus markerti is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It was described only in 2014, is endemic to a remote and difficult reach of the lower Congo, and — unlike a handful of its relatives such as the relatively common Lamprologus congoensis and the occasionally traded Lamprologus tigripictilis and Lamprologus werneri — it has no established record of being collected for or kept by aquarists. Any keeping advice is therefore extrapolated from the genus rather than tested on this species, and that caveat should be kept front of mind.
What the riverine Lamprologus need is well understood from their relatives. They are active, fast-moving fish from oxygen-rich rapids, so brisk water movement, strong aeration and frequent water changes matter more than precise water chemistry; a tank of at least 30 US gallons (about 30 US gal) is a sensible minimum for a pair, scaled up if other fish are present. The aquascape should mimic a rocky river margin — a sand base with abundant rockwork arranged to create genuine caves, plus waterlogged wood — since these are cave-brooders that will only spawn if natural-looking caves are available. Plants play essentially no part in their habitat and are not needed.
Though their native water is soft, the genus is reported to be hardy and adaptable, faring well in both mildly acidic and mildly alkaline conditions; a pH around neutral and a temperature of roughly 75–79 °F (75–79 °F) are the usual recommendations. Feeding presents no difficulty: as insectivores they take live and frozen invertebrate foods readily, and their small fry can be raised on baby brine shrimp, microworms or vinegar eels. For tankmates, the main rule is to avoid large, aggressive cichlids that would prevent a pair from holding the territory they need to breed; otherwise the genus is manageable, and several generations can coexist in a mature tank. None of this has been confirmed for Lamprologus markerti itself, which remains, for now, a fish of the river rather than the aquarium.
Conservation
Lamprologus markerti has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List (a verified search of the Red List returns no assessment for the species), so it carries no formal conservation category; it is likewise unlisted by CITES and CMS. This reflects how recently and narrowly it has been documented rather than any judgement that it is secure. The species is a narrow-range endemic confined to a single short stretch of the lower Congo, the kind of restricted distribution that warrants caution. The Lower Congo Rapids ecoregion to which it belongs is recognized for a distinctive, highly endemic fish fauna adapted to fast water — of 129 fish species recorded from the rapids, 34 are endemic — yet it remains poorly surveyed, and the government of the DRC has itself flagged the country's rapids and waterfalls as priority habitats in need of biodiversity study. The chief looming pressure on this reach is hydropower: the Inga dam complex, immediately upstream of the species' range and the focus of large further development proposals, has the potential to alter the flow regime that the rapids fauna depends on. No population data or specific threats have been published for Lamprologus markerti, and any statement about its status should acknowledge that it has simply not yet been assessed.
