Oreochromis latilabris, the wide-lipped Natron tilapia, is a tiny soda-lake cichlid found only at Lake Natron in northern Tanzania — about as hostile a body of water as still supports fish anywhere. It shares the lake's spring-fed margins with Alcolapia alcalica and Alcolapia ndalalani, three members of a young species flock that radiated in less than ten thousand years. Its broad, downturned mouth and thick, fleshy lips give it away: this is a fish that grazes blue-green algae off the substrate of caustic springs where the water runs to pH 10 and beyond and can push past 104 °F. Lothar Seegers and Herbert Tichy described it in 1999. It is cichlid evolution in fast-forward, playing out in water so extreme that these little fish are the only vertebrates that can live in it.

Name history

Taxonomy & naming

The German ichthyologists Lothar Seegers and Herbert Tichy described Oreochromis latilabris in 1999, in their monograph on the 'Oreochromis alcalicus flock' of Lakes Natron and Magadi (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 10: 97–146) — the same paper that named its sister species Alcolapia ndalalani. The type locality is Olomotony, a spring-fed creek feeding the southern affluent of the Southern Lagoon of Lake Natron, north of the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. The holotype (ZMB 32888) is held in the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, with paratypes spread across the Natural History Museum (London), the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Tervuren), Naturalis (Leiden), and the museums of Berlin and Hamburg. The genus Alcolapia was erected by Thys van den Audenaerde in 1969 for the alkaline-lake tilapias — first as a subgenus of Tilapia, later treated under Oreochromis. Seegers and Tichy's revision raised Alcolapia to full genus and recognized the Natron flock as several distinct species rather than variants of one. Most molecular and behavioural work follows that elevation, but the name is unsettled: Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase keep the species as Oreochromis latilabris, sinking Alcolapia back into Oreochromis. The four Alcolapia species form a tight, recently diverged clade — Alcolapia alcalica, Oreochromis latilabris and Alcolapia ndalalani in Lake Natron (Tanzania), and Alcolapia grahami in Lake Magadi (Kenya). All descend from a single ancestor stranded when a larger Rift-Valley palaeolake (Orolonga) contracted and split into the present soda lakes some 8,000 to 10,000 years ago.

Morphology

Oreochromis latilabris is a small, slender, elongate cichlid, reaching about 2.5 in standard length by FishBase and the original description — among the smallest of the tilapiine cichlids. Fin counts run to 13–14 dorsal spines with 11–13 soft rays, and 3 anal spines with 9–12 soft rays. The mouth is what names the fish and tells it apart from its two lake-mates at a glance: broad and downturned, with large, distinctly thickened lips carrying numerous teeth. The latilabris epithet, Latin for 'wide lip', is literal. In breeding condition the sexes pull sharply apart. Territorial males develop dark-edged dorsal and anal fins, iridescent blue-white spots scattered across the flanks, white lips, and a spotted caudal fin rimmed in pink. That nuptial dress varies by locality — some Natron populations show yellow bellies and throats, others stay white. Females and non-territorial males keep a plain sandy look, paler on the belly and sometimes marked with vertical bars. Head and mouth shape, together with male nuptial colour, are the main characters separating the three Natron species that live side by side.

Habitat

Oreochromis latilabris is endemic to the catchment of Lake Natron, a shallow endorheic soda lake in the Gregory Rift of northern Tanzania, fed by hot springs and the Ewaso Ng'iro drainage and ringed by trona (sodium-carbonate) salt flats. It does not live in the open lake — the central brine is lethal. Instead it is confined to a scattering of southern and southeastern springs and their effluent streams, plus springs and a stream near the southwestern lagoon between the Moinik River and the lake. That pinprick distribution is precisely why the species is considered threatened. The chemistry is among the most extreme any fish tolerates. Lakes Natron and Magadi run at a pH around 10 (locally higher) and a salinity approaching ten percent, the water saturated in sodium carbonate and bicarbonate; the marginal lagoons, streams and hot springs are usually very shallow, often less than a metre deep. Volcanic fissures vent gas and heat that can drive spring water past 104 °F, and the fish work the edges of these scalding pools for the richest algal growth. Daytime conditions swing violently — hot, hypersaline, strongly alkaline, with extremes of dissolved oxygen and ultraviolet exposure on top. Alcolapia are the only fishes in these lakes at all, carrying a suite of adaptations — to pH, temperature, salinity, oxygen and UV — that no other cichlids possess.

Feeding

Oreochromis latilabris is mainly a herbivore, grazing the dense mats of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) that coat the substrate of its spring habitats, and taking the small invertebrates and organic material among them as a sideline. That cyanobacterial mat anchors an unusually short, productive food web: extreme conditions exclude competitors and predators, so the algae thriving in the warm, alkaline, nutrient-rich water feed both the cichlids and the vast flocks of lesser flamingos that breed at Natron. The best feeding sits in the worst places. Algal mats grow thickest around the heat-releasing fissures, so the fish dart into near-scalding water to tear off a mouthful before retreating to cooler shallows — a gamble the occasional floating body shows they don't always win. The broad, thick-lipped, downturned mouth is a grazing tool, and the differences in mouth and head shape among the three Natron species are thought to reflect how they divide up this algal-scraping niche.

Mating

Sexual selection runs strong in Alcolapia. Populations reach high density, males wear conspicuous breeding dress, the sex ratio is male-biased, and males gather to display on leks — all classic marks of fierce competition for mates. Territorial males defend small spawning sites among rocks and on raised substrate in the shallow spring water, build bowers or pits, and court passing females from them. With the three Natron species spawning side by side, mate choice is the main barrier keeping them distinct. Experimental work on the flock (Lawson and colleagues, 2023) found courtship and paternity to be significantly assortative — fish preferentially mate within their own species. The barrier leaks, though: in three-way choice experiments roughly 29 percent of offspring were hybrids, a measure of how recently these species split and how incomplete their reproductive isolation still is. The differences in male nuptial colour between Oreochromis latilabris, Alcolapia alcalica and Alcolapia ndalalani are thought to be a principal cue females use to stay within their own kind.

Breeding

Like its tilapiine relatives, Oreochromis latilabris is a maternal (ovophilic) mouthbrooder. A territorial male defends a spawning site among rocks in shallow water and courts a ripe female there; she lays her eggs, takes them into her mouth, and broods the clutch herself while the male returns to his territory. Breeding data specific to latilabris are sparse, but its congeners fill in the picture. In the closely related, similarly sized Alcolapia alcalica, early clutches are tiny — six to eight fry — and rise to twenty or more as females mature, with the eggs held in the mouth for up to about eighteen days before release; maternal care after that is brief. Magadi's Alcolapia grahami spawns on lekking grounds, the male building a stepped central bower ringed by satellite pits. Small body size, a fast reproductive turnover — high resilience and a short population doubling time — and a warm environment that never changes season together let the flock hold dense populations in a habitat that should defeat them.

In the aquarium

Oreochromis latilabris is, in plain terms, not an aquarium fish — a narrow-range extremophile whose entire wild life is confined to a handful of hot, hypersaline, sodium-carbonate springs and their outflows at Lake Natron. The chemistry alone settles it. Holding a stable pH of 9 to 10.5 in water that is at once very warm (75–104 °F), highly saline, and saturated in sodium carbonate and bicarbonate is far beyond standard aquarium technique. The 'hard, alkaline' tap water that suits Rift-Valley cichlids is no substitute — Natron water is closer to a dilute industrial alkali than to a freshwater tank. There are no documented imports of Oreochromis latilabris into the hobby and no credible accounts of anyone keeping it. Its congener Alcolapia alcalica has been kept and bred in alkaline tap water by specialist hobbyists (Steeves 2014), which shows extreme-pH Alcolapia can survive on compromise conditions — but that is Alcolapia alcalica, not latilabris, and even that only underlines how far outside the mainstream these fish sit. Conservation adds another wall: with a Vulnerable listing and a range of a few springs, collection pressure would put wild populations at genuine risk. Anyone with a serious scientific interest in the physiology of these fish should turn to the published laboratory work (Wood et al. 1989; Walsh et al. 2001) or to the researchers who have studied them in situ.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Oreochromis latilabris (as Oreochromis latilabris) as Vulnerable under criterion D2, assessed on 31 January 2006 by Hanssens and Snoeks; the population trend is unknown and the assessment is flagged as needing updating. The listing rests entirely on range restriction. The fish is known only from a few springs and small inflow streams in the southern Lake Natron drainage, and such a pinpoint distribution leaves it acutely exposed to local habitat degradation and to chance events. The wider threat to Natron's endemic life is well documented: proposals over the past two decades for a soda-ash extraction plant on the lake, along with upstream water abstraction and hydropower on the feeder rivers, have drawn international concern, because any of them could shift the lake's hydrology and chemistry — the same conditions the cichlids and the world's most important lesser-flamingo breeding site both depend on. A microendemic tied to a handful of springs has nowhere to retreat if those springs are degraded. There is no CITES listing. One hopeful note: captive husbandry of the genus has proven feasible, with hobbyists keeping and breeding Alcolapia alcalica in ordinary alkaline tap water, which suggests an ex-situ safeguard is at least possible for these otherwise irreplaceable fish.
