Taxonomy & naming
Albert Günther named this fish Heros managuensis in 1867, in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, and described it more fully the following year (Günther 1868, with a plate). The type material is a single specimen — the holotype, BMNH 1865.7.20.32 in London's Natural History Museum — taken from Lake Managua, Nicaragua, which is the source of the species epithet. That detail matters and is easy to misread: the name memorializes Lake Managua because the holotype happened to come from there, not because the lake is the fish's heartland. As the habitat below makes clear, the bulk of the natural range lies elsewhere.
The genus has been a moving target. Through the twentieth century the fish was almost universally called Cichlasoma managuense, the catch-all genus into which most New World cichlids were once dumped, and it has also been listed as Nandopsis managuensis. The modern placement traces to Kullander & Hartel's 1997 review of the cichlid genera Louis Agassiz erected in 1859 — Amphilophus, Hypsophrys, and Parachromis among them — which resurrected Parachromis as a valid genus for a small group of large Central American piscivores. Sven Kullander's 2003 checklist of South and Central American freshwater fishes fixed the fish where it sits today, and the Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid: Parachromis managuensis (Günther 1867). The genus name Parachromis Agassiz 1859 takes nomenclatural priority for the group, and the nominal species Parachromis gulosus Agassiz 1859 is treated as a synonym. Authorities differ on the subfamily label — the Catalog of Fishes files it under Cichlinae, while FishBase and Seriously Fish use the older Cichlasomatinae — a bookkeeping distinction, not a dispute about the fish. The spelling itself is a small lesson in Latin grammar: because the genus Heros is masculine, an adjectival epithet with a neuter ending (-ense) must take the masculine form (-ensis), which is why hobby and museum literature reads Heros managuensis, not the older Cichlasoma managuense (Buntbarsche Bulletin 105). Common names track its two lives: jaguar cichlid, jaguar or Aztec or spotted guapote in English; guapote tigre, guapote barcino, mojarra de Managua, or simply pinto in Spanish.
Morphology
This is a powerfully built, fusiform cichlid with a large head, a wide gape, and a lower jaw that juts past the upper — the unmistakable profile of an ambush piscivore. Enlarged canine teeth line the front of the jaws. The diagnostic dress, given in Günther's description and in the standard keys, is the scatter of black blotches: a row of dark patches runs along the midline of the flank, more spots stipple the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, and a black blotch sits at the base of the tail. Against a ground that shifts from silvery to golden-green and on to purple iridescence — moss-green over the back, a whitish or yellowish belly — those broken blotches read as the jaguar rosettes that name the fish. Two dark stripes run back from the eye, one to the upper edge of the gill cover and one to its lower angle. A useful technical separator from its congeners is the preopercle, which is expanded at the angle in this species.
Size is where reports diverge most, and it pays to be honest about why. Ichthyological checklists are conservative: Kullander (2003) gives a maximum near 8.5 in standard length, the figure the USGS profile cites. FishBase, drawing on the fisheries literature, lists a maximum of 21.5 in total length and 1.6 kg, with an older record of 25 in TL. Aquarists and anglers routinely meet fish in the 14-16 inch (14–15.5 in) range, and well-fed specimens in very large tanks have been reliably reported past 20 inches. The fair reading is that wild fish span a wide range and the headline numbers describe exceptional individuals; in the hobby, mature size is governed as much by tank volume and feeding as by genetics. Sexual dimorphism is clear: males grow larger, carry longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins, often develop a fleshy nuchal hump on the forehead with age, and show more color; females are smaller and rounder, and develop a stronger crimson flush on the gill cover when in breeding condition.
Habitat
Parachromis managuensis is a fish of the Atlantic (Caribbean) versant of Central America. Its natural range runs from the Ulua River in Honduras south through Nicaragua to the Matina (or, by other accounts, the Parismina) River drainage in Costa Rica, at low elevations from sea level to roughly 148 ft. The IUCN puts the extent of occurrence at about 194,0 mi², calculated as a polygon around native-range records. So while the species honors Lake Managua, the lake marks one edge of a far broader lowland distribution that threads the rivers, lagoons, and lakes of the Caribbean slope rather than centering on the Nicaraguan great lakes themselves.
Within that range it is decidedly a still-water and slow-water specialist. FishBase and the field literature describe adults in lakes with turbid water and mud bottoms — including highly eutrophic, very warm, and seasonally oxygen-poor inundation lakes — and in springs, ponds, and the tranquil reaches of rivers over detritus and sand. The IUCN assessment adds estuarine lagoons to the list, noting it favors stagnant water around submerged debris along lake and river shorelines. Recorded depths run from about 10–33 ft. Its tolerances are broad: water temperatures of roughly 25-36 degrees C, alkaline hard water (FishBase gives pH 7.0-8.7, 10-15 dH), and low oxygen that would kill more demanding fish. That hardiness is also why it travels so well as an introduction. Released through the aquarium trade and from fish farms and food-fish stockings, it now breeds far outside its range — across most Pacific-slope drainages of Central America, in Mexico, Panama, Brazil, the Philippines and Singapore, and in the United States, where the USGS records established populations in Florida and Puerto Rico, with scattered or eradicated occurrences in Hawaii, Nevada, and a notorious Utah spring. In south Florida's canals it has become a fixture of the introduced cichlid fauna that fly-anglers now net alongside Mayan cichlids and Jack Dempseys (AMAZONAS, Sept/Oct 2024).
Feeding
The jaguar cichlid is a committed predator — an ambush piscivore in the fullest sense. FishBase places it near the top of the freshwater food web, at a trophic level around 4.0, and field studies consistently describe it as highly predaceous, feeding mainly on small fishes and rounded out with macroinvertebrates such as aquatic insects and crustaceans. The mouth and dentition match the diet: a big gape, a protruding lower jaw, and prominent canines that seize and hold slippery prey rather than crush it. Juveniles lean more heavily on aquatic invertebrates before graduating to fish as they grow, a familiar ontogenetic shift among the guapotes.
In its native communities it functions as one of the larger native predators, and that role is exactly what makes it consequential where it has been introduced: a hungry, fast-growing piscivore dropped into a fauna that did not evolve alongside it. The USGS notes that the ecological impact of its U.S. introductions remains formally unstudied, but its predatory habits earned it official concern — when it appeared in a spring feeding Utah's Virgin River in the 1980s, managers treated it as a threat to native fishes and went so far as to use rotenone and explosives in an attempt to remove it.
Mating
Pairs in Parachromis managuensis are monogamous, and they form on their own terms rather than to order. The hobby's standard route to a compatible pair is to raise a group of six or so juveniles together and let a bond settle out of the group, rather than forcing two adults to cohabit — a precaution that reflects how combative the species is when courtship is mismatched. A recurring and important detail from keepers is intra-pair violence: a male will harass or even kill a female that is not ready to spawn when he is, which is why ample cover and broken sightlines matter so much in captivity.
Once a pair has bonded, courtship resolves into the cooperative work of preparing a site. The two fish select and clean a flat, hard surface — a rock, a log, a slab — scouring it of algae and debris until it is fit to receive eggs, and they begin to hold and defend the patch of bottom around it. The deepening crimson flush on the female's gill cover and a general intensifying of color signal that spawning is near. From this point the pair operates as a coordinated unit, and the territory they have staked becomes the center of everything that follows.
Breeding
Parachromis managuensis is a biparental substrate spawner, and a diligent one. The female lays her eggs directly onto the cleaned surface the pair has prepared; reported clutches are large, commonly cited at up to about 5,000 eggs, with an outlier record over 10,000. Both parents guard the eggs and, once they hatch, move the wrigglers to pits excavated in the substrate and shepherd the free-swimming fry. Keepers describe them as excellent and ferociously attentive parents that tend a brood for up to six weeks, by which point the fry are 0.5–1 in.
Nest defense is where this fish's temperament shows its full edge. A breeding pair will hold and defend a substantial territory and drive off — or kill — anything that approaches the eggs or fry, a single-minded aggression far beyond the everyday menace of a large predator that simply regards smaller tankmates as food. After a successful brood the adults will often spawn again, at which point the older fry must be separated or they will be killed when the parents turn to defend the new clutch. The TFH account of the species' breeding cycle and keepers' reports alike stress that the violence is not malfunction but design: this is a fish built to push a brood through to independence in turbid, predator-rich water.
In the aquarium
The jaguar is a hobby icon for good reason — striking, intelligent, responsive to its keeper — and it is firmly an advanced fish, not a community fish and not a beginner's. The honest constraint is size and temperament. A single adult needs a genuinely large tank: a four-foot, roughly 200-litre tank is the floor for a smaller individual, and a fish pushing 12 inches or more, or any attempt at tankmates, calls for something far bigger — six feet and beyond. It will eat anything it can swallow, so the realistic tankmate list is short and consists of similarly large, robust cichlids and catfishes in a tank with enough room and structure to break up territories; many serious keepers run a big male alone, in a species-only setup. Provide immovable rockwork, caves and wood for cover, oversized filtration for a messy carnivore, and a secure lid.
Water chemistry is the easy part: it is unfussy across roughly pH 7-8.5 and moderate-to-hard water, and it tolerates a wide temperature band, with the hobby commonly keeping it in the mid-to-high 70s Fahrenheit (around 25-30 degrees C). Diet should be built on a quality carnivore or cichlid staple, supplemented with meaty foods like prawns, mussel, or earthworms — and the old habit of feeding mammalian meats such as beef heart is best avoided. The mistake most worth flagging is breeding it without a plan: a single spawn from a good-sized pair can yield thousands of fry, every one of them a potential foot-and-a-half predator, and there is simply nowhere for them all to go. Think hard before giving a pair the opportunity.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Parachromis managuensis as Least Concern (Lyons & Matamoros, assessed 5 February 2020). The reasoning is straightforward: a wide native range spanning Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, high local abundances at sampled sites, and no evidence of a range-wide collapse. It is also a valued resource — harvested in subsistence, artisanal, and small-scale commercial fisheries and marketed fresh as the guapote tigre, and a respected light-tackle game fish, kin to the larger, more celebrated wolf cichlid (Parachromis dovii, the 'rainbow bass') that anglers chase on the same waters. So the species itself is secure, and its hardiness and value have made it an exporter of populations rather than a candidate for protection.
That security, though, sits inside a strained basin, and the assessment is careful to log a decreasing population trend. The native lowland waters — and the Nicaraguan great lakes in particular — face real and documented pressure: eutrophication and nutrient loading from agricultural runoff, sewage and solid-waste pollution, mercury and sediment from mining and deforestation, and the widespread introduction of African tilapia (Oreochromis spp.), which are now harvested alongside the guapote and may compete with native cichlids. Looming over Lake Nicaragua is the long-running proposal for an interoceanic canal, which would magnify habitat disturbance and pollution across the basin. The honest summary is the one the Red List itself draws: the jaguar cichlid is in no danger of disappearing — but the waters it came from, including the lake it is named for, are under genuine strain, and a degraded, tilapia-filled basin is a poorer place even for a fish this tough.
