Paretroplus maromandia, the banded Madagascar cichlid, is one of the rarest of the damba — the deep-bodied cichlids endemic to the lowland rivers of northwestern Madagascar. Described only in 1999 from a handful of specimens taken near the village of Maromandia, it is a disc-shaped, golden-flanked fish crossed by seven bold black bars and washed below the midline with vivid red. A relict of the ancient Gondwanan cichlid subfamily Etroplinae, whose closest living kin are the Asian Etroplus rather than any African cichlid, it survives in a sliver of tidally influenced rivers and floodplain lakes now under intense pressure from deforestation, overfishing, and introduced fishes — and the IUCN lists it as Endangered.

Taxonomy & naming

Paretroplus maromandia was described by John S. Sparks and Peter N. Reinthal in 1999, in the Occasional Papers of the Museum of Zoology, University of Michigan (number 727, 18 pages), from material collected in the Andranomalaza drainage near the village of Maromandia in northwestern Madagascar. It was the first Malagasy cichlid that Sparks — who would go on to revise the entire genus — formally named, and the original account rested on a very small series of specimens. The genus Paretroplus was erected by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1868, with Paretroplus damii (from Nosy Be) as its type species; today it holds roughly thirteen described species, all confined to the lowlands of Madagascar. Paretroplus belongs to the subfamily Etroplinae, an ancient Gondwanan lineage whose only other members are the brackish- and freshwater Etroplus and Pseudetroplus of India and Sri Lanka — a biogeographic relict pattern dating to the breakup of Gondwana. Within Paretroplus, maromandia sits in the so-called deep-bodied 'damba' clade alongside Paretroplus dambabe, P. maculatus, Paretroplus menarambo, Paretroplus petiti, and Paretroplus polyactis. Sparks's 1999 analysis recovered Paretroplus menarambo as its sister species, the two sharing an elevated precaudal and total vertebral count and an increased number of dorsal-fin soft rays. Sparks's comprehensive 2008 monograph (Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History 314) redescribed the genus on the basis of a combined morphological and molecular phylogeny and confirmed the species' placement. The species epithet is a noun in apposition formed from the name of the type locality, the town and region of Maromandia.

Morphology

Paretroplus maromandia is a deep-bodied, strongly laterally compressed cichlid reaching about 5 in in standard length, the smaller end of the damba size range. The body is high and more or less disc-shaped, with a curved frontal profile broken by a conspicuous interorbital bump and a straight, comparatively weakly sloping snout that together produce a pronounced dorsal concavity in front of the eye — a diagnostic profile. The dorsal fin originates well behind a vertical through the pectoral-fin insertion. The fin counts run to 15–16 dorsal spines and 20–23 soft rays, with 8–9 anal spines and 14–16 anal soft rays; the high anal-spine count (seven or more) is a hallmark of the genus and separates Paretroplus at a glance from every other native Madagascan cichlid, which carry only three. The species is the only western-drainage Paretroplus with strong lateral barring, and it is distinguished from its lookalike relative Paretroplus polyactis by an elevated lateral-line scale count (39–41 versus 31–36) and fewer gill rakers. In life it is unmistakable: a bright yellow to greenish-yellow ground colour interrupted by seven prominent, solid black vertical bars that run more or less over the entire flank, from the dorsal-fin base — sometimes onto the fin membrane — down to the anal-fin base. Below the lateral midline the flanks carry vivid red pigmentation, and the iris is golden (versus the red iris of Paretroplus polyactis). Crucially, the full set of bars stays prominent into adulthood, where in many congeners the barring fades. Sexual dimorphism is weak and poorly documented; as in other dambas, ripe females are recognised mainly by a fuller, deeper body when in spawning condition rather than by colour.

Habitat

Paretroplus maromandia is endemic to northwestern Madagascar and is known from a very restricted area — the Andranomalaza drainage around Maromandia, with the IUCN assessment also citing the adjacent Maevarano river basin. Unlike most of its damba relatives, which are largely restricted to shallow, often turbid floodplain lakes, Paretroplus maromandia occurs in the lower reaches of large, tidally influenced rivers and their estuaries, as well as shallow floodplain lakes such as Lake Andrapongy. This lower-river, partly estuarine setting means the species ranges into fresh and brackish water, and it is the only member of the deep-bodied clade typically found in flowing, tidally affected habitat. These are warm lowland waters: across the genus the water is mostly soft, with pH ranging from mildly acidic to distinctly alkaline (about 6.5 to 8 or above) and temperatures that frequently exceed 86 °F in the dry season. Aquatic vegetation is generally sparse to absent, and the bottom is silt, sand, mud, or rock. As a demersal, bottom-oriented fish of shallow river margins and floodplain shallows, it lives within the upper few metres of the water column; precise in-situ depth and chemistry for this particular species have not been published in detail, and most parameters here are extrapolated from genus-level field data (Sparks 2008; de Rham & Nourissat 2005).

Feeding

Paretroplus maromandia is a specialised mollusc-eater. Like its congeners it carries robust, molariform pharyngeal teeth — a stout lower pharyngeal mill built for crushing shells — and radiographs of Paretroplus maromandia specifically show guts tightly packed with crushed small gastropods (Sparks 2008). This makes it a hard-shelled-snail predator that works the soft sediments of river margins and floodplain shallows, gathering snails and crushing them in the throat. Most Paretroplus are thought to take a significant fraction of their diet as molluscs, supplemented by algae and other benthic material, so while maromandia is clearly snail-focused it is best regarded as a durophagous omnivore rather than an obligate molluscivore. Its trophic level is estimated at around 2.9. In the floodplain and estuarine communities it inhabits, it occupies the role of a benthic shell-crusher, a guild for which dedicated competitors are few.

Mating

No detailed account of courtship or pair formation in Paretroplus maromandia itself has been published, and what is known is drawn from the genus as a whole. All Paretroplus are monogamous, biparental substrate spawners that form pairs and become territorial around a chosen spawning site. In the open-water dambas — the deep-bodied clade to which maromandia belongs — pairs typically court over and defend a patch of open substrate, a rock, or a waterlogged log rather than excavating a cave. Spawning is seasonal in the wild, concentrated in roughly August through October, the latter half of the Madagascan dry season. These are large, robust, and often aggressive cichlids, and pair bonds are accompanied by vigorous defence of the spawning territory; keepers have found that maintaining several fish together as juveniles lets pairs form naturally and dilutes the intraspecific aggression that otherwise makes pairing difficult. Because the species has rarely if ever been kept outside Madagascar, its specific breeding behaviour remains essentially undocumented and is inferred from better-studied relatives such as Paretroplus menarambo and P. maculatus.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented for Paretroplus maromandia in the wild or, so far as the literature records, in captivity; the account here is genus-typical. Paretroplus are biparental substrate spawners. Pairs deposit adhesive eggs — large and salmon-to-orange in colour — onto a cleaned hard surface such as a rock or a piece of submerged wood, or sometimes into a shallow depression excavated in the bottom; the open-water dambas generally spawn on exposed substrate while the rheophilic, rock-dwelling species in the genus tend toward cave spawning. Both parents share guarding and fanning of the eggs and, after hatching, tend the wrigglers and free-swimming fry together. Clutch sizes for the damba group are modest by cichlid standards — typically on the order of a few hundred eggs in related species — though no exact fecundity figure has been published for maromandia. Fry develop slowly: across the genus, fish mature at around twelve to eighteen months and growth thereafter is unhurried, which is one reason captive-breeding programmes for the endangered dambas are so demanding. Breeders of related Paretroplus stress that fry must be fed live food, such as newly hatched brine shrimp, continuously for the first several months to raise them successfully.

In the aquarium

Paretroplus maromandia is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish: it is one of the rarest dambas, has essentially never been established in the hobby outside Madagascar, and any husbandry guidance must be read off its better-known congeners rather than from direct experience with this species. That said, the genus is kept and bred by a small, dedicated community of conservation-minded aquarists, and the general requirements are well understood. Dambas are large, robust, and aggressive cichlids that need substantial tanks — on the order of 105 US gal for the smaller species and considerably more for the rest — furnished with a fine sand substrate, rockwork, and driftwood, and little or no planting (plants are absent from their natural habitat and are nibbled anyway). They are social fish best kept as a group, which both reduces intraspecific aggression and allows pairs to form; a single-species setup is strongly preferred if breeding is the goal. Water should be well filtered and frequently changed, warm (above 75 °F generally, and above about 81 °F to induce spawning), and at or above neutral pH, reflecting the warm, soft-to-alkaline waters of northwestern Madagascar. Diet should lean on what the species is built to eat: a snail-rich menu (including hard-shelled snails, which the molariform pharyngeal teeth readily crush) plus frozen invertebrate foods, quality prepared foods, and occasional vegetable matter. The overriding point for any aquarist is conservation: experienced keepers warn that Paretroplus may be lost from both the wild and captivity within a generation, so these fish should be taken on only as a long-term commitment, not as a novelty.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Paretroplus maromandia as Endangered (criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv)), assessed on 2 July 2016 by J.S. Sparks, with a decreasing population trend. The listing reflects a very small known range — restricted to the Andranomalaza and Maevarano river basins of northwestern Madagascar — in habitat that is being actively degraded. The principal threats are deforestation and the consequent siltation and degradation of lowland rivers and floodplains, overfishing (Paretroplus are valued food fish in Madagascar, and the fisheries that once sustained communities on both coasts have collapsed), and competition and predation from introduced exotic fishes, especially tilapias and other invaders now widespread in Malagasy waters. These pressures bear on the whole genus: of Madagascar's roughly thirty described cichlids, nearly half are Paretroplus, and several — including P. maculatus, Paretroplus menarambo, Paretroplus dambabe, and Paretroplus gymnopreopercularis — are listed as Critically Endangered with only tiny remnant populations. Madagascar's freshwater fauna as a whole is among the most imperilled and least protected on Earth, with conservation attention historically focused on the island's terrestrial wildlife. For maromandia and its relatives, ex-situ captive-breeding networks run by hobbyist and public aquaria have become a genuine part of the survival strategy, but the long-term outlook in the wild remains precarious.
