Ptychochromis grandidieri, the saroy, is the most widespread and resilient of Madagascar's endemic cichlids — a hardy, gold-flushed substrate spawner that ranges along almost the entire eastern coast of the island. Unlike the many narrowly-distributed, gravely-threatened Malagasy cichlids it shares the island with, the saroy thrives in fresh and brackish water alike, pushing down rivers into estuaries and persisting through the interconnected Pangalanes lagoon-canal system. It is the Ptychochromis a hobbyist is most likely to meet, valued as an accessible introduction to a family of fishes whose threat display, courtship and brood care all read as faintly alien next to the familiar African and American cichlids.

Taxonomy & naming

Ptychochromis grandidieri was described by the French naturalist Henri Émile Sauvage in 1882, in the Bulletin de la Société Philomathique de Paris, from material in the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle collection; Sauvage gave the type locality only loosely as Madagascar. The genus Ptychochromis had been erected by Steindachner in 1880, and the name's defining feature — a free toothplate associated with the second epibranchial bone — is diagnostic of the genus among all cichlids. For much of the twentieth century the species' validity was unsettled: grandidieri was treated by various authors as a synonym of the northwestern Ptychochromis oligacanthus, and a second Sauvage name, Pantanodon madagascariensis (1891), floated through the same synonymy. John S. Sparks resolved the tangle in a 2003 study (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters) that compared collections from across Madagascar, including the primary types of every nominal species, against a molecular phylogeny. Sparks removed Ptychochromis grandidieri from synonymy with Ptychochromis oligacanthus, restricting it to the eastern drainages, and sank Pantanodon madagascariensis into Ptychochromis grandidieri instead, diagnosing the species by coloration, pigmentation pattern, and the morphology of its second pharyngobranchial toothplates. The genus was comprehensively revised again by Stiassny & Sparks (2006), who described five additional new species, split off the genus Katria, and confirmed that the ptychochromine cichlids (Ptychochromis, Ptychochromoides and Oxylapia) form a monophyletic, ancient Malagasy radiation now placed in the subfamily Ptychochrominae. In their phylogeny the western species (Ptychochromis inornatus, Ptychochromis oligacanthus) form a clade sister to the eastern Ptychochromis grandidieri. The fish carries the Malagasy vernacular name saroy and circulates in the hobby as the 'East Coast Gold' Ptychochromis.

Morphology

The saroy is a tall-bodied, fusiform cichlid that reaches about 8.5 in standard length in FishBase's record, with males clearly outgrowing females — aquarists report males approaching 9 in total length and females topping out nearer 7 in. The base color is famously variable, shifting with collection locality, age, sex and mood from a dull tan, through dark slate gray, to a vivid yellow-gold; specimens from more southerly populations are reported to be the most brightly colored. Against that ground runs the species' most consistent diagnostic mark: a horizontal series of well-defined black blotches set mid-laterally along each flank. Sparks's diagnosis also rests on internal anatomy — expansive second pharyngobranchial toothplates bearing four to seven rows of closely-set teeth — features that separate it from its congeners more reliably than the protean external color. Sexual dimorphism is modest and can be hard to read outside breeding condition: males grow larger and develop somewhat heavier, more produced finnage, while ripe females deepen in the body. The sexes are notoriously difficult to tell apart by genital papilla, a point experienced keepers have learned the hard way when an apparent pair turns out to be two females.

Habitat

Ptychochromis grandidieri is endemic to Madagascar and, as currently recognized, is restricted to the eastern drainages — the river basins draining the island's humid eastern escarpment to the Indian Ocean. It is overwhelmingly a fish of low elevations and the coastal lowland plain, where it occupies rivers, streams, marshy backwaters and the brackish reaches close to the sea. The defining ecological trait of the species is its salt tolerance: it readily enters brackish estuaries and is at home throughout the Pangalanes (Pangalanes/Ampangalana) canal system, the long chain of interconnected coastal lagoons and waterways that parallels the east coast. This euryhaline habit is a large part of why the saroy has remained common while many strictly-freshwater Malagasy cichlids have collapsed. Its waters are warm and tropical; FishBase classes it as a freshwater and brackish, demersal, tropical species. In ecoregion terms the bulk of the population sits within the Madagascar Eastern Lowlands freshwater ecoregion — the lower, humid-climate coastal drainages — with relict populations reaching the adjoining Madagascar Eastern Highlands above roughly 656 ft; those upland populations have suffered the steepest declines. Documented depth is shallow: these are shoreline, stream and lagoon fish of the upper few metres rather than deep-water residents.

Feeding

The saroy is a generalist omnivore that forages over and within the substrate of warm lowland rivers, lagoons and estuaries. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.4, consistent with a mixed diet of small invertebrates, plant and algal material, and organic detritus taken from the bottom and the water column. It is not a dietary specialist, and that flexibility — like its tolerance of brackish water — underpins the species' success across a wide range of degraded and variable habitats. In captivity this translates into an exceptionally easy fish to feed: keepers report it taking cichlid pellets and sticks, vegetable- and spirulina-based prepared foods, and standard flake without hesitation, alongside live and frozen invertebrates. The readiness with which it accepts plant-based foods reflects the herbivorous component of its natural omnivory.

Mating

Ptychochromis grandidieri is a biparental substrate spawner that forms pairs from a group, and its social behavior is a major part of its appeal. Hobbyists who have kept the broader ptychochromine complex describe these Malagasy cichlids as only moderately aggressive but distinctly idiosyncratic: threat displays, courtship and fry defense can strike even an experienced keeper as odd, unlike anything in the African Rift-lake or Neotropical cichlids. Pairs become territorial around a chosen spawning site and will defend it, but the species is not a relentless aggressor and can be over-matched by more pugnacious cichlids. Because external sexing is unreliable, pair formation is best achieved by raising a group of six or more juveniles together and letting compatible pairs sort themselves out — keepers have repeatedly been caught out by two females 'pairing,' spawning on schedule, and producing nothing but infertile clutches. Reports suggest that environmental shifts, in particular changes in salinity, help bring the fish into spawning condition.

Breeding

Spawning is biparental on an open substrate: the pair cleans a flat hard surface — a slate, smooth stone or similar — and the female lays her eggs on it while both parents guard and tend the site, in the manner typical of the genus rather than as a cave or mouthbrooder. Reported clutches are moderate; genus-typical figures run on the order of a few hundred eggs. A well-documented hobbyist account by Rick Borstein (Greater Chicago Cichlid Association) records eggs laid on a piece of red slate hatching about four days after spawning, with the fry wriggling at that point and becoming free-swimming by roughly the end of the first week; the newly free-swimming young are immediately large enough to take baby brine shrimp. The same account is notable for what it reveals about triggers and husbandry: spawning attempts repeatedly followed the heavy addition of aquarium salt and large water changes, leading the keeper to suggest gradually lowering salinity and then performing a big water change with a strong dose of salt as a deliberate spawning cue. Parental care is more attentive than the genus's general reputation would suggest — one observed pair guarded and shepherded free-swimming fry for about three weeks before the brood dispersed. Growth, as in all Ptychochromis, is slow.

In the aquarium

Among Madagascar's cichlids the saroy is the most attainable and the most forgiving, and it is the species most often recommended as an entry point to the group; it can be housed and bred in tanks of roughly 50 US gallons (50 US gal) and up, with a 75–100 gallon tank giving a group the room to pair and raise fry comfortably. A sand or fine-substrate bottom suits its digging and foraging, and at least one flat hard surface (a slate or smooth stone) should be provided as a spawning site. The single most important husbandry point is disease management: like many Malagasy cichlids, Ptychochromis grandidieri has little natural resistance to ich and other skin infections and can 'ich up' alarmingly fast, and common dye- or copper-based cures are only partially effective against it. The proven prophylactic — and a likely spawning trigger besides — is salt: experienced keepers maintain these fish in noticeably brackish water (on the order of a tablespoon of salt per ten gallons, and successful breeders have run far higher, on the order of one to two pounds in a 90–100 gallon tank), replacing salt with each partial water change. Regular large water changes (25–50% weekly) keep the fish in condition. On tankmates, the saroy is similar enough in body shape to robust Central American cichlids to be singled out as a rival, yet is not an especially good fighter, so it should not be housed with aggressive Neotropical cichlids; calmer companions that share its tolerance for hard, slightly saline water are a better match. Feeding presents no difficulty (see Feeding). The chief frustrations keepers report are slow growth, the difficulty of sexing the fish, and ich outbreaks in under-salted tanks rather than any fragility of temperament. Maintain warm, tropical temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s °C and near-neutral to slightly alkaline, moderately hard water; the species is far more tolerant of dissolved minerals and salinity than most cichlids.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Ptychochromis grandidieri as Least Concern (assessed 27 June 2016 by J.S. Sparks; population trend unknown). This is the rare optimistic note among Madagascar's cichlids: where many ptychochromine and paretroplin species are Endangered, Critically Endangered or already feared extinct, the saroy remains widespread and locally abundant along the eastern coast. Its salt tolerance is explicitly credited with its persistence — the species' ability to live in the brackish Pangalanes canal system and coastal estuaries buffers it against pressures that have devastated strictly-freshwater relatives. The assessment nonetheless lists real threats: pervasive habitat loss and degradation from deforestation and the resulting sedimentation, overfishing, and the introduction of exotic species (introduced tilapias, snakeheads and others have reshaped Malagasy freshwater communities). These pressures fall hardest on the species' higher-elevation populations, which have undergone severe attrition even as the lowland coastal stronghold holds. The saroy is not CITES-listed. Its status should be read against the broader collapse of Madagascar's endemic freshwater fauna, in which it stands out as a resilient survivor rather than a fish that is genuinely safe.
