Taxonomy & naming
The cherry-belly jewel was described in 1899 by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger, who placed it in the now-defunct genus Paratilapia as Paratilapia cerasogaster. His material came from the Belgian Congo expedition collections and was drawn from Utanda and Kutu on what was then Lake Leopold II — today Lake Mai-Ndombe — and his account appeared in the Annales du Musée du Congo. The name is anchored by syntypes split between the Natural History Museum in London (BMNH 1899.11.27.67-68, from Utanda) and the Royal Museum for Central Africa at Tervuren (MRAC). The species was later transferred to Hemichromis, the African jewel-cichlid genus, and treated there through the standard checklists — Daget & Teugels (1991) list it as Rubricatochromis cerasogaster, the combination under which most of the literature and the hobby still know it. In 2022 Anton Lamboj and Stephan Koblmüller published a molecular phylogeny and revision of Hemichromis that split the genus in two: the large, predatory 'five-spotted' cichlids (including the type species Hemichromis fasciatus) kept the name Hemichromis, while the smaller 'red jewel' lineage — bimaculatus, guttatus, lifalili, exsul, cerasogaster and their kin — was moved to a new genus, Rubricatochromis. Under that revision the valid name is Rubricatochromis cerasogaster, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now lists it so; we retain the long-established Hemichromis heading here because that is how the fish is overwhelmingly catalogued and traded. Within the red-jewel group cerasogaster is something of an outlier — slimmer, more pelagic in habit, and confined to a single isolated lake rather than to the rivers and streams of West and Central Africa where the others occur.
The species also has a curious, largely unrelated history of mistaken identity, one that helps explain why so little was documented about its living appearance for decades. In the mid-1980s a wave of red jewel cichlids imported from the lower Zaïre, chiefly from around Kinshasa, was labelled in the aquarium trade and literature as Rubricatochromis cerasogaster. Comparison with Boulenger's type material later showed these imports were in fact the closely related Hemichromis stellifer, whose type locality lies close to Kinshasa; true R. cerasogaster is a strict endemic of the distant Lake Mai-Ndombe, hundreds of kilometres away, and had essentially no presence in the wild-caught trade. As one reviewer of the confusion noted at the time, no reliable account of the living colour of true R. cerasogaster existed, because the fish being kept, photographed and written about under that name was almost always something else.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of about 3.5 in total length, and aquarium accounts put well-grown adults at roughly 4 in, making it one of the more modestly sized members of its genus. Where most red jewels are deep-bodied and chunky, Rubricatochromis cerasogaster is noticeably more elongate and laterally compressed — a build that fits its open-water habits. The ground colour is unusual for the group: rather than the saturated brick-red of a typical jewel, the body is a soft lilac to lavender-grey, overlaid in good condition with the fine sky-blue spangling that runs across the cichlids of this lineage. The single most useful field mark, and one easily checked even on preserved museum material, is the absence of a mid-lateral spot: where its frequently confused look-alike Hemichromis stellifer and most other jewel cichlids carry a bold black spot at mid-body, true R. cerasogaster lacks it entirely. Two further features are diagnostic and present in both sexes: a golden or brassy 'mask' across the cheek and gill cover, and a distinct black blotch set in the dorsal fin. The species' name comes from its breeding livery — cerasogaster means 'cherry-belly', and ripe fish, especially females, flush a deep cherry-red across the lower flanks and belly. Historical collectors also noted the fish as somewhat thick-lipped, a minor peculiarity that set it apart from the other Mai-Ndombe cichlids. Sexual dimorphism is present but understated: males grow a little larger and develop more extended, pointed dorsal and anal fins, while ripe females are rounder-bodied and tend to show the most intense cherry belly when in spawning condition.
Habitat
Rubricatochromis cerasogaster is endemic to Lake Mai-Ndombe (formerly Lake Leopold II) in the Mai-Ndombe Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo; a single old record from Brazzaville is regarded as dubious. Mai-Ndombe is a remarkable water body — an irregularly shaped lake some 84 mi long and 11–34 mi wide, covering roughly 2,186 mi² but averaging only about 10 ft deep, so that it expands and contracts markedly with the seasons. It sits at the lowest interior point of the Cuvette Centrale, the saucer-shaped depression at the heart of the Congo basin, and is thought to be a remnant of a far larger ancient interior lake. Crucially for its fishes, Mai-Ndombe is a true blackwater lake: stained dark by humic and tannic compounds leached from the surrounding swamp forests, strongly acidic, and low in dissolved minerals. Heavy rains from October onward flood the marginal forests and Raphia swamps, and during the flood much of the food available to fish comes from terrestrial litter and floating vegetation. FishBase reports a temperature range of about 72–79 °F for the species. As a shallow-lake fish it lives within the upper few metres of the water column over the lake's soft, organic-rich bottom and along its vegetated, flooded margins. The lake's two other endemic fishes — the dwarf cichlid Nanochromis transvestitus and the catfish Amphilius opisthophthalmus — share this same restricted, blackwater world, underlining how isolated and distinctive the Mai-Ndombe fauna is.
Feeding
No detailed wild gut-content study of Rubricatochromis cerasogaster appears in the accessible literature, so its diet is read from its anatomy, its relatives and its habitat. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.4 — squarely a micro-predator and generalist carnivore rather than a herbivore or detritivore. Like other members of the red-jewel lineage it is built to take small live prey: aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other invertebrates picked from the substrate, the water column and among submerged vegetation. Its more slender, open-water form, unusual within the genus, suggests it forages more freely off the bottom than the stockier bottom-oriented jewels, consistent with a shallow blackwater lake in which much of the seasonal food supply arrives as floating and flood-borne material. In the community it functions as a small, mobile invertebrate predator of the lake's littoral and surface zones.
Mating
Like the jewel cichlids generally, Rubricatochromis cerasogaster forms a monogamous pair that defends a territory together — FishBase characterises it as a substratum spawner with well-defined pair-bonding. What sets it apart from its notoriously belligerent relatives is temperament: it is consistently reported as comparatively peaceful, both in collectors' notes and in the limited aquarium experience available, which fits its more pelagic, less rock-bound lifestyle. Pair formation follows the familiar jewel-cichlid pattern of mutual display, intensifying colour, and the adoption of a shared spawning site, with both fish brightening into their cherry-bellied breeding dress as the pair bond solidifies. As in other biparental cichlids the bond can still turn tense if the two fish are poorly matched or confined, but the species does not show the extreme, often lethal intraspecific aggression that makes some red jewels difficult tankmates even for their own mates.
Breeding
Rubricatochromis cerasogaster is a biparental open-substratum spawner. Following the well-documented pattern of its genus, the pair cleans a flat surface — a stone, a leaf, a firm patch of substrate — and the female lays an adhesive sheet of eggs on it, which the pair then guards and tends together. Wild spawning has not been described in detail and no published clutch count exists specifically for this species; by the standard of small Rubricatochromis/Hemichromis jewels, clutches typically run from roughly 100 to several hundred eggs, with the exact figure scaling with the female's size. Parental care is the textbook jewel-cichlid model: the female concentrates on fanning and cleaning the eggs while the male patrols the territory, and after hatching both parents shepherd a tight school of free-swimming fry, moving them between pits and guarding them vigorously until they are independent. The species has been bred in captivity — most of the few specimens ever offered to hobbyists have been tank-raised European stock rather than wild imports — but it remains an uncommon and little-documented fish, and reliable breeding accounts are scarce. Soft, warm, acidic water mirroring its native blackwater lake is the logical trigger, and the species' classification as a high-resilience fish with a short population doubling time implies it can be reasonably productive once a compatible pair settles.
In the aquarium
The cherry-belly jewel is a connoisseur's fish that very rarely enters the trade. There are essentially no commercial wild imports from Lake Mai-Ndombe; the handful of fish that circulate are captive-bred lines passed between specialist keepers, and even those appear only sporadically. Anyone who keeps it is therefore working largely without a recipe, extrapolating from the species' biology and from experience with its better-known relatives.
Because it is small (under about 4 in) and unusually peaceful for a jewel cichlid, it does not need the oversized, heavily decorated quarters that aggressive red jewels demand. A pair can be housed in a tank of roughly 35.5–47 in length; what matters more than raw volume is a well-structured layout with rockwork, driftwood, leaf litter and planting to provide territory edges, spawning surfaces and sightline breaks. As with all paired cichlids, a larger footprint makes life easier if the bond sours. A soft sand substrate suits a fish of organic-bottomed blackwater, and subdued lighting over tannin-stained water shows off the lilac body and cherry belly far better than bright tanks do.
Water chemistry should track the species' native lake: soft, warm and acidic. A temperature in the mid-20s °C (about 75–81 °F) and a clearly acidic pH — most keepers of Congo blackwater fish target somewhere around pH 5.5-6.5 — with low hardness is the sensible target, achievable with RO water, peat or botanical tannins, and gentle, well-oxygenated filtration without strong current. The species is not adapted to hard, alkaline water and is best not pushed there. Feeding is straightforward for a small invertebrate predator: a varied diet of live and frozen foods — bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, small crustaceans — alongside a quality prepared staple keeps colour and condition.
For tankmates, this is one of the rare jewel cichlids that can plausibly share a community with other calm soft-water fishes — West/Central African tetras, small barbs, or other peaceful blackwater species of similar size — rather than needing solitary confinement. It should still be given the respect any breeding cichlid deserves: a spawning pair will defend its brood and clear a patch of territory, so provide room and cover for any companions. The single biggest practical obstacle is simply availability; this is a fish you have to seek out from breeders, not buy off a shop shelf, and keeping the captive line alive is part of why the species matters to specialists at all.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Rubricatochromis cerasogaster as Endangered, under criterion B1ab(v), assessed on 16 February 2009 (published 2010) by T. Moelants, with the population trend recorded as unknown. The listing turns on the fish's extreme geographic restriction: it is known only from Lake Mai-Ndombe, a single lake whose total extent gives the species a very small range, so that any local pressure translates directly into range-wide risk. The threats flagged by the assessment are mining and quarrying in the catchment and fishing and harvesting of aquatic resources — the latter significant because Mai-Ndombe supports artisanal fisheries that local communities depend on. The lake itself is poorly studied: freshwater ecologists rate the taxonomic exploration of the Mai-Ndombe ecoregion as poor, with most records resting on a few historical collections, so the true status of its fishes is genuinely uncertain. Set against that, the lake lies in a region of vast, still-intact swamp forest, and the species carries no CITES or CMS listing. For a single-lake endemic with almost no presence in the aquarium trade, the maintenance of captive-bred lines by hobbyists is a modest but real insurance policy against the loss of a fish that exists nowhere else.
