Schwetzochromis neodon is a small, slender rheophilic cichlid endemic to a single short river in the Democratic Republic of the Congo — the Fwa, a clearwater tributary of the Kasai system in the heart of the central African rainforest. It is the type and only undisputed species of the genus Schwetzochromis, erected by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1948 for a fish whose teeth, he wrote, were 'entirely different from all the known cichlids of the Congo Basin.' A maternal mouthbrooder that grazes algae and diatoms from current-swept rock, it belongs to a tangle of riverine 'haplochromine' genera — Schwetzochromis, Orthochromis and their allies — whose boundaries molecular work has shown to be far blurrier than their names suggest.

Taxonomy & naming

Schwetzochromis neodon was described by Max Poll in 1948, in a paper devoted to new cichlids that the physician Dr. Jacques (Yakov) Schwetz had collected from the Fwa River during a medical survey in the then Belgian Congo (Poll 1948, Revue de Zoologie et de Botanique Africaines 41(1): 91–104). Poll made it the type species of a brand-new genus, Schwetzochromis, by monotypy, naming the genus for its collector. The holotype (MRAC 71288) and a single paratype (MRAC 71289) are held in the Royal Museum for Central Africa at Tervuren. In the same 1948 work Poll also named a second Fwa fish, Haplochromis rheophilus; Roberts & Kullander (1994), in their monograph on the endemic cichlids of the Fwa, recognised that Haplochromis rheophilus and Schwetzochromis neodon were the same fish, so Haplochromis rheophilus Poll, 1948 falls as a junior synonym. A second synonym, Neopharynx neodon, reflects an alternative generic placement that did not stick. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the current status unambiguously: valid as Schwetzochromis neodon Poll, 1948, in the family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae.

The genus has been genuinely unstable, and it is worth being honest about why. Schwetzochromis is one of a cluster of small African 'haplochromine' genera — Orthochromis Greenwood, 1954 (type Orthochromis malagaraziensis), Schwetzochromis Poll, 1948, and rheophilic species still parked in Haplochromis — erected for stream- and rapids-dwelling cichlids that share a torrent-adapted body but little else that is demonstrably exclusive. Over the years species have been shuffled among these names: several fishes once placed in Schwetzochromis (for example Schwetzochromis torrenticola) were later returned to Orthochromis by Roberts & Kullander (1994), which is the reverse of the move readers sometimes expect. De Vos & Seegers (1998) provided the most recent morphological diagnosis of Schwetzochromis. Crucially, molecular phylogenetics — Salzburger et al. (2002), Koblmüller et al. (2008), Schwarzer et al. (2012) and Dunz & Schliewen (2013), reviewed by Schedel et al. (2014) — has shown 'strongly' that the cichlids currently placed in Orthochromis and Schwetzochromis are not monophyletic, but rather represent several distinct lineages within a conglomerate of ill-defined, often polyphyletic haplochromine genera. In other words, Schwetzochromis neodon's genus is a holding label as much as a clade. The Catalog of Fishes nonetheless keeps Schwetzochromis valid and distinct from Orthochromis pending a comprehensive revision, and that is the name used here. The species remains diagnosable: Schedel et al. (2014) separate it from rheophilic Orthochromis by its sharply contrasting longitudinal stripes, its lack of lachrymal (snout) stripes, elongate pelvic fins in males, four to six rows of inner jaw teeth (versus one to three), and large ocellated egg-spots on the anal fin in both sexes.

Morphology

Schwetzochromis neodon is a small, fusiform cichlid built for life against a current. FishBase gives a maximum size of about 4 in standard length (SL); the type series and the material re-examined by Schedel et al. (2014) ran roughly 3–3.5 in SL for both sexes, so this is a fish in the 3–4.5 in bracket rather than a large cichlid. The body is comparatively low and streamlined, the head pointed, in keeping with the torrent-dweller body plan shared across the riverine haplochromine genera. Its single most distinctive feature is the one Poll built the name around: the dentition. He described the teeth as entirely unlike those of any other Congo-basin cichlid, with four to six rows of small inner teeth in each jaw — many more inner rows than the one to three of comparable Orthochromis — a grazing apparatus matched to its diet of algae and plant fragments scraped from rock. In life the fish carries sharply contrasting dark longitudinal stripes along a paler ground, and, diagnostically, it lacks the lachrymal stripes that cross the snout in several Orthochromis. Sexual dimorphism is present and useful: males develop conspicuously elongate pelvic fins, and both sexes bear large, ocellated (ringed) egg-spots on the anal fin — an unusual trait, since in many haplochromines well-formed egg-spots are a male feature. As with most mouthbrooders, breeding males are the more intensely coloured sex.

Habitat

The species is a microendemic with one of the smallest ranges of any described cichlid: it is known only from the Fwa River, a short tributary (roughly 12 mi long) in the Kasai drainage of the middle Congo basin, in Kasai-Oriental Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Sources differ slightly on the immediate drainage geography — FishBase and the IUCN trace the Fwa into the Lubu and thence the Sankuru, while the FEOW Kasai ecoregion account calls the Fwa a tributary of the Lubi — but all agree it sits within the Kasai (Freshwater Ecoregion 546), a vast plateau-and-rapids system draining into the mainstem Congo. The Fwa is not a violent whitewater torrent. Roberts & Kullander (1994) describe it as a remarkably clear, stable, spring-fed stream, and that stability is thought to be exactly what allowed an endemic species flock to evolve in so small a water: the Fwa alone holds five endemic cichlids, including two species of the genus Cyclopharynx found nowhere else. FishBase accordingly characterises Schwetzochromis neodon as only 'moderately rheophilic' — a current-associated grazer of clear, well-oxygenated flowing water over firm substrate rather than a specialist of crashing rapids. Published in-situ chemistry for the Fwa is sparse; the clearwater plateau tributaries of the Kasai are typically warm and not strongly mineralised. FishBase lists a tropical thermal floor near 77 °F; aquarist reports from the same Fwa system (for its co-endemic Cyclopharynx) describe roughly 72–82 °F and a near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH around 7.5–8.2, which is a reasonable working envelope for a fish of clear, hard-bottomed central-African streams. No depth survey has been published for so small a river, but it is a shallow-water animal: a band of roughly 1–7 ft over rock and gravel is a defensible inference for a benthic grazer in a 12 mi stream.

Feeding

Schwetzochromis neodon is, by the standards of the cichlid family, a committed herbivore. Roberts & Kullander (1994) reported it feeding on filamentous algae, diatoms, and a great variety of small fragments of higher and lower plants — the aufwuchs and periphyton that coat current-washed rock and woody debris in a clear stream. The IUCN assessment, drawing on the same source, calls it strictly herbivorous. Its specialised dentition — the many rows of small inner teeth that gave the species its name — is the tool for this: a comb-and-rasp arrangement suited to scraping and combing algal mats and biofilm rather than seizing prey. FishBase's model-based trophic level of about 3.3 reflects estimation from body size and relatives rather than gut contents and should be read with caution against the direct dietary observations, which point to a grazer near the base of the food web. In its community Schwetzochromis neodon functions as one of the rock-grazing primary consumers of the Fwa, sharing the algal-film resource with the river's other endemic cichlids.

Mating

Direct observations of courtship in Schwetzochromis neodon have not been published — it has rarely been collected and is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby — so its mating behaviour must be read from its reproductive biology and from its better-known relatives. FishBase classifies it as an ovophilic, agamous maternal mouthbrooder: 'agamous' meaning that pairs do not form lasting bonds, the male contributing only at spawning. This is the classic haplochromine system, in which a male holds a small territory and displays to ripe females, spawning is brief, and there is no biparental partnership. The large ocellated egg-spots on the anal fin — present here in both sexes — are, in mouthbrooding cichlids, a courtship and spawning signal tied to the egg-dummy mechanism by which a female is induced to mouth the male's vent and take up sperm to fertilise the clutch she is already carrying. The elongate pelvic fins of males are most plausibly a display structure. Territoriality is therefore expected to be male-centred and transient, organised around spawning rather than around a defended nest of developing young.

Breeding

Schwetzochromis neodon is a maternal (ovophilic) mouthbrooder: the female takes the fertilised eggs into her buccal cavity and broods them there, with no contribution from the male after spawning (FishBase, after the haplochromine literature). No wild clutch has been counted and no aquarium spawning has been documented in print, so a precise fecundity figure is not on record. For a maternal mouthbrooder of this small size (3–4.5 in) a modest clutch is expected — on the order of a few dozen comparatively large eggs, in line with rheophilic haplochromine congeners, which trade egg number for the protection of oral incubation. The egg-spot/egg-dummy spawning mechanism described above implies the standard sequence: the female lays a small batch, takes the eggs into her mouth, and is stimulated by the male's anal-fin ocelli to complete fertilisation orally. Parental care is thus entirely maternal and confined to the brooding female, who shelters eggs and then free-swimming fry in her mouth until they are released as well-developed, independent juveniles — a strategy well suited to a flowing stream where unguarded eggs would be swept away. The specifics of incubation time and fry size for this species remain undocumented and would be valuable to record.

In the aquarium

Schwetzochromis neodon is, for all practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is a microendemic of a single remote Congolese river, it is rarely collected, and it has essentially no presence in the ornamental trade; the handful of photographs in circulation (such as Anton Lamboj's aquarium male on the Cichlid Room Companion) are of scientific or specialist interest rather than evidence of an established hobby strain. What follows is therefore a husbandry inference from its biology and from the keeping of its Fwa co-endemics (notably Cyclopharynx), not a tested protocol — and that caveat is the honest headline.

Anyone fortunate enough to keep it should reproduce a clear, well-oxygenated, gently-flowing stream rather than a still tank or a violent rapids set-up. A long, well-filtered aquarium of at least 39.5–47 in with brisk circulation, high dissolved oxygen, scrupulously clean water and a hard substrate of rounded rock and gravel would suit a current-associated grazer of this kind. Water should be warm (roughly 75–82 °F) and, on the evidence from the Fwa system, neutral to slightly alkaline and moderately mineralised (pH around 7.0–8.0) rather than soft and acidic — these are clearwater plateau-stream fish, not blackwater fish. Because the species is a dedicated algae-and-aufwuchs grazer, diet should be vegetable-led: spirulina- and algae-based foods, blanched greens, and biofilm grazed from rock, supplemented sparingly with small live or frozen invertebrates. As a small territorial mouthbrooder it is best kept as a group in which aggression is diffused, with structured rockwork to break sightlines. None of this is a substitute for first-hand experience the hobby does not yet possess; the realistic statement is that this is a fish for public aquaria and specialist breeders attempting to safeguard a narrow-range endemic, not a community-tank candidate.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Schwetzochromis neodon as Least Concern (assessed 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants; published in the 2010 pan-African freshwater assessment; assessment id 182770/7964878, still the live record as of the 2025-2 update, where it is flagged 'Needs updating'). The justification is that within the Central African assessment region the species is considered widespread or without major threats; the only documented human use is local subsistence harvest for food, and no specific threats were recorded. That category should be read with care, however, against the species' biology. This is a true microendemic, known only from the Fwa — a single river perhaps 12 mi long — so a 'Least Concern' verdict reflects an absence of identified threats rather than the security of a wide range. A narrow-range endemic of one small clearwater stream is inherently exposed to localised pressures: deforestation and agriculture across the Kasai plateau, siltation and altered flow, and any degradation of the spring-fed clarity that appears to underpin the Fwa's unusual endemic flock. The wider Kasai ecoregion is classed as poorly explored taxonomically (FEOW 546), and Schwetzochromis neodon's own genus-level placement is unresolved, so even basic monitoring is thin. The species carries no CITES listing. A modern, locality-specific reassessment — the Red List itself notes the record needs updating — would be the single most useful conservation step.
