Taxonomy & naming
Serranochromis janus was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1964, in her major revision of the genus published in the Annales du Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale, Tervuren (Série in-8o, Sciences Zoologiques No. 125). The holotype (BMNH 1964.6.1.1) and its paratypes (BMNH 1964.6.1.2-10 and MRAC 140900) came from the Malagarazi swamps at Kitare (also spelt Katare), in the Malagarasi system of western Tanzania. The Catalog of Fishes lists the species as valid as Serranochromis janus Trewavas 1964, in the family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, with no junior synonyms; it has been upheld as valid by Skelton & Teugels (1991), De Vos et al. (2001) and again in the genus key of Stauffer, Bills & Skelton (2021). The genus Serranochromis was erected by C. Tate Regan in 1920 and revised in full by Trewavas in this same 1964 work; it belongs to the serranochromine lineage of riverine haplochromines that radiated across the Zambezi, Okavango, Cunene and upper Congo systems. Serranochromis janus is the lineage's eastern outlier, the only species restricted to the Malagarasi-Moyowosi drainage of the Lake Tanganyika basin. The specific name janus refers to the two-faced Roman god of doorways and transitions; Trewavas applied it in the sense of a species facing two ways — combining characters, or bridging groups, within her revised genus. In gross form Serranochromis janus belongs with the round-tailed largemouths: like its relatives Serranochromis macrocephalus and Serranochromis angusticeps it has a rounded rather than emarginate caudal fin, a feature the 2021 describers used to separate that group from their new Angolan species.
Morphology
Serranochromis janus is one of the larger members of the genus, reaching about 14 in in standard length (FishBase), a big predatory cichlid by any measure. The body is the genus norm: fusiform, robust and laterally compressed, with an oval cross-section, deepest around the start of the dorsal fin. The defining feature is the mouth — large, terminal and protrusible, armed with exposed, widely spaced caniniform teeth that mark it as a fish built to seize and hold prey. The head is large and the eyes well developed; the caudal fin is rounded, the trait that allies it with the round-tailed largemouths Serranochromis macrocephalus and Serranochromis angusticeps and separates it from the emarginate- or truncate-tailed members of the genus. Detailed published meristics are sparse in the popular literature, but the fish carries the genus-typical long-based dorsal of many spines followed by soft rays, three anal spines, and the egg-spot ocelli on the anal fin that figure in haplochromine courtship. As in other mouthbrooding haplochromines, sexual dimorphism is expected to be pronounced in breeding condition, with males developing brighter nuptial coloration and the anal-fin ocelli; specific descriptions of the live nuptial dress of Serranochromis janus are not well documented, a reflection of how little the species has been studied since its original description.
Habitat
Serranochromis janus is endemic to the Malagarasi system of western Tanzania — the large river-and-swamp drainage that, together with the Moyowosi, makes up FEOW freshwater ecoregion 543 (Malagarasi-Moyowosi) and ultimately drains toward Lake Tanganyika. The type series came from the Malagarasi swamps at Kitare, and the species is associated with the permanent swamp belt that lines parts of the upper and middle Malagarasi at altitudes of roughly 1,200–1,820 ft. It is a fish of slow-flowing, well-vegetated water: FishBase records that it inhabits areas of slow current with vegetation, the kind of structured, sluggish, weed-fringed habitat in which a sit-and-wait predator can ambush prey. This is a markedly different setting from the clear, sandy or rocky upland channels of its Angolan and Zambezian relatives, and the isolation of the Malagarasi swamps within the Tanganyika basin is presumably what allowed this eastern outlier of the genus to differentiate. Published in-situ water chemistry is scant; the upper Malagarasi is a warm tropical-highland system, and by regional standards suitable water would be warm and roughly neutral. The swamps themselves are seasonally dynamic, expanding and contracting with the rains, a regime that shapes the breeding and feeding cycles of their fishes.
Feeding
Serranochromis janus is an ambush piscivore, in keeping with the whole genus and with its big canine-toothed mouth. FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level of about 4.1 — among the highest in the genus, marking it as a top-end predator that feeds substantially on other fishes. The large, protrusible jaws and exposed, widely spaced canine teeth are the equipment of a fish that seizes slippery prey and holds it, rather than rasping or sifting; across the genus the larger species take smaller fishes supplemented by aquatic insects, snails and crustaceans. In the vegetated, slow-flowing swamp habitat it occupies, Serranochromis janus would hunt from cover among the marginal weed, picking off the small fishes and invertebrates that shelter there — the classic strategy of the largemouths, which use structure to close on prey. Detailed gut-content studies specific to Serranochromis janus are lacking, so the precise prey spectrum is inferred from its anatomy, its high trophic position, and the documented diets of its relatives rather than directly observed.
Mating
The detailed reproductive behavior of Serranochromis janus has not been documented; what follows is drawn from the consistent pattern across Serranochromis and the serranochromine haplochromines. These are maternal mouthbrooders, and the genus breeds seasonally in step with the flood and rainfall cycle — here the expansion of the Malagarasi swamps with the rains. Males develop bright nuptial coloration and the anal-fin ocelli, and take a territory, courting and displaying to females rather than forming a lasting pair bond. The egg-spot ocelli on the male's anal fin are the classic haplochromine courtship device: as the female mouths at the spots she is induced to take up the male's milt, fertilising the clutch she already carries. After spawning the male's involvement ends; parental investment falls entirely to the female, who carries and protects the brood. The vegetated swamp margins the species favours provide both the spawning substrate and the cover in which a brooding female can shelter.
Breeding
Direct breeding observations of Serranochromis janus are lacking, but its mode is not in doubt: like all Serranochromis it is a maternal mouthbrooder. The female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and incubates them there through hatching and the early larval stage, the brood sheltered in the buccal cavity from the egg- and fry-predators of the swamp; after release the fry may continue to shelter in her mouth when threatened, a hallmark of advanced haplochromine care. Clutch size has not been measured for this species; in the genus, fecundity is modest by cichlid standards — on the order of tens to a few hundred relatively large eggs, scaling with female size, the trade-off inherent to mouthbrooders, which sacrifice egg number for the heavy parental protection of oral incubation. As one of the larger species, a big female Serranochromis janus would sit toward the upper end of that range. Spawning is expected to be seasonal, tied to the rising-water phase of the Malagarasi's flood. Beyond this genus-level template, the specifics of egg number, incubation period and fry development in Serranochromis janus remain undocumented — FishBase explicitly notes that no information on its breeding is available.
In the aquarium
Serranochromis janus is effectively unknown in the aquarium hobby. It is a large, range-restricted predator from a remote western-Tanzanian swamp system, with no established presence in the ornamental trade, so any husbandry guidance can only be extrapolated from the genus. As a fish that can reach 14 in, it would demand a very large tank — well into the hundreds of litres, with a long footprint and open swimming room — together with the well-vegetated, structured cover and slow-flowing conditions of its natural swamp habitat. Water should be kept warm and clean, roughly 72–82 °F and near neutral, with strong filtration and generous water changes to handle the waste load of a large piscivore. It would have to be fed as the predator it is, on meaty foods, and could not be trusted with any tankmate small enough to be swallowed; like other largemouths it would likely be intolerant of conspecifics outside of breeding. None of this has been tested for Serranochromis janus specifically. Given its restricted range and Data Deficient status, it is best regarded as a wild fish to study and conserve in place rather than a target for the aquarium.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Serranochromis janus as Data Deficient (DD), reflecting that too little is known of its distribution, population size and trend to place it in a threat category. It is endemic to a single drainage — the Malagarasi-Moyowosi system of western Tanzania — which on its own would make a narrow-range endemic of conservation interest, but the basic survey and population data needed for a formal threat assessment are lacking. The Malagarasi swamps and river face the broad pressures common to East African wetlands: agricultural encroachment, swamp drainage and conversion, sedimentation, and changes to the flow regime, all of which bear on the slow-flowing, vegetated habitat this species depends on; the Malagarasi has also been the subject of hydropower interest. None of these is documented as a specific, quantified threat to Serranochromis janus, which is precisely why it remains Data Deficient rather than assigned a category. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. The honest summary is that the species' status is genuinely uncertain, and a targeted survey of the Malagarasi swamps would be needed to resolve it.
