Taxonomy & naming
The longfin largemouth was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1911, in his account of a collection of fishes from the Lake Ngami basin in what was then Bechuanaland (modern Botswana). He placed it in the catch-all cichlid genus Paratilapia, as Paratilapia longimanus; the type series came from the Okavango–Ngami drainage, and a lectotype (Natural History Museum, London, BMNH 1910.5.31.62) was later fixed by Skelton and Teugels in their 1991 CLOFFA treatment of the genus. The species belongs to Serranochromis, a genus erected by Charles Tate Regan in 1920 (in a footnote, with Chromis thumbergi Castelnau as its type) and comprehensively revised by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1964. Trewavas, and later workers, split the genus into two subgenera on trophic grounds: the large-mouthed, piscivorous Serranochromis proper, and the smaller-mouthed, invertebrate-feeding Sargochromis (sometimes treated as a separate genus). Serranochromis longimanus sits squarely in the piscivorous subgenus Serranochromis. The genus has been the subject of active modern revision — Stauffer and colleagues re-elevated Serranochromis jallae to full species in 2020, and a 2021 paper by the same group described four further new species from the Cuanza and Okavango systems of Angola and offered a preliminary key — but through all of this Serranochromis longimanus has stood as a valid, recognised species, listed as such by Skelton (1993, 2001), Marshall (2011) and the Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Serranochromis longimanus is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid with the large head and big, oblique mouth typical of the predatory largemouths. FishBase gives a maximum length of about 12 in SL, making it one of the more modestly sized members of its subgenus; most field-caught fish are considerably smaller, the specimens Winemiller examined from the Barotse floodplain running near 6.5 in SL. The body carries the unicuspid jaw teeth set in two series, the widely spaced gill rakers, and the egg-ocelli on the anal fin of breeding males that together diagnose the genus. Its own field mark is the one its name advertises: the fins are notably elongate, and in particular the long, dark pectoral fins reach back past the middle of the dorsal-fin base — a feature ichthyologists use to separate it from the otherwise similar red-flanked largemouth, Serranochromis swartzi, in which the pectorals are shorter. The Latin epithet longimanus, "long-handed," refers to these trailing fins. Coloration is the silvery-olive to brassy ground of the genus, often with darker mottling or bars on the flanks and iridescence in the unpaired fins; breeding males intensify and develop the ocellated anal pattern. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern documented by Winemiller across its Zambezi relatives: males grow larger and mature at greater lengths than females, and breeding males carry the diagnostic anal ocelli.
Habitat
The longfin largemouth is a fish of the upper Zambezi and Okavango river systems at the heart of southern Africa, with records extending into the Cuando (Linyanti/Chobe) drainage and the Angolan headwaters that feed the Okavango — the Cuito and Cuando rivers — and, per the wider genus picture, into the upper Congo fringes. FishBase frames the range simply as the Okavango River and upper Zambezi River, between roughly 10°S and 20°S. Within this range it is, as several surveys note, locally common but patchily distributed: it is a specialist of permanent floodplain lagoons, canals and quiet backwaters rather than the open main channel favoured by larger congeners such as the nembwe (Serranochromis robustus) or the humpback bream (Serranochromis altus). In Winemiller's intensive 1989 survey of Zambia's Barotse (upper Zambezi) floodplain it was genuinely uncommon, the handful of specimens taken from central-floodplain lagoons and backwaters and a single immature from the shoreline of the Chobe River. The waters it lives in are the soft, clear, often tea-stained blackwaters draining ancient nutrient-poor Kalahari sands: across that floodplain Winemiller recorded pH from about 5.5 in floodplain pools to 7.0 in tributaries, river pH of 6.3–6.9, and water temperatures swinging from about 64 °F on cold winter mornings to 82 °F in the late dry season, with the water always near oxygen saturation. As a lagoon and backwater fish it occupies shallow, vegetated water — the genus generally keeps to depths under about 33 ft — rather than the deep channel.
Feeding
Serranochromis longimanus is a piscivore, a member of the large-mouthed predatory subgenus whose species partition the upper Zambezi between them as a guild of fish-eaters. FishBase summarises its habit succinctly: very common in permanent floodplain lagoons and backwaters, active at night, preying on small fishes and on insects such as dragonfly nymphs. That nocturnal, ambush-from-cover style fits its weedy lagoon habitat and contrasts with the open-channel, daytime hunting of the nembwe or the crepuscular mormyrid-hunting of Serranochromis altus; Winemiller's comparative work showed how finely these largemouths divide habitat and prey, with diet overlap between coexisting species kept remarkably low. The big oblique mouth and grasping jaws are the tools of a fish that engulfs whole prey, and as a mid-sized predator of small fishes and large aquatic invertebrates the longfin largemouth occupies an intermediate rung of the floodplain food web — FishBase places its trophic level near 3.9.
Mating
Detailed courtship observations are not published for Serranochromis longimanus specifically, and what follows is drawn from the well-studied biology of its close upper-Zambezi congeners. Serranochromis are seasonal breeders tied to the flood pulse: across the Barotse floodplain, Winemiller found that the various species ripened through the late dry season (September onward) and appear to spawn just before the annual floods arrive, so that mouthbrooding females can carry their young out onto the newly inundated, predator-poor plain. Fish concentrate as the floodplain drains and water levels fall, which is thought to ease the finding of mates. Pairs of ripe males and females have been taken together in the pre-spawning season. As in the rest of the genus, males grow larger and the breeding male advertises with the ocellated anal fin; for the related Serranochromis jallae, simple saucer-shaped depressions about 12 in across are scraped on sandy substrate among vegetation as spawning sites (van der Waal). The longfin largemouth's preference for vegetated lagoons suggests a similar sheltered, near-cover spawning setting.
Breeding
Like every member of the genus, Serranochromis longimanus is a maternal mouthbrooder — a fact established for Serranochromis as a whole by Trewavas (1964) and Jubb (1967). The female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them there through development, releasing free-swimming fry once they can fend for themselves; the male's role ends at spawning. No clutch count has been published for the longfin largemouth itself. Among its upper-Zambezi relatives that Winemiller measured, ripe females carried on the order of several hundred to a bit over a thousand large oocytes — roughly 360 in the small rainbow bream up to about 1,165 in the much larger nembwe — with mature eggs around 0.5 in in diameter, a small-clutch, large-egg, mouthbrooding strategy. Given its modest adult size, the longfin largemouth's fecundity is best read as toward the lower end of that genus-typical range. Spawning is timed to the rising flood, so brooding females can transport their young to the safety of the freshly flooded plain; in the floodplain populations Winemiller aged, the largemouths reached maturity at about two to three years.
In the aquarium
Serranochromis longimanus is essentially never seen in the ornamental trade and has no established body of aquarium husbandry — it is documented here as a wild fish, not a hobby staple. Anyone who did keep it should treat it as what it is: a predatory, ultimately ~12 in largemouth bream that needs a large tank. A single adult or a carefully managed group would want a long aquarium on the order of 71 in and several hundred litres, with open swimming water over fine sand, generous structure (driftwood, roots, reed-like plants or robust hardy species) to break sightlines, and the dim, tannin-stained water of its blackwater home. Water should be soft and acidic to neutral and warm — roughly pH 6.0–7.5 and 72–82 °F, well within the 64–82 °F and pH 5.5–7.0 range measured in its native floodplains — with strong filtration but gentle flow, since these are fish of still lagoons rather than rapids. It is a committed piscivore: it will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow, so companions must be too large to be prey and robust enough to share space with a predator, while the long, trailing fins make it a poor match for determined fin-nippers. Like its relatives it would be a seasonal, flood-cued mouthbrooder, so any breeding attempt would hinge on simulating a wet-season cycle — softening, water changes and a warming trend on a rich live/meaty diet. The honest summary is that this is a fish for a public aquarium or a specialist with space, not a community tank.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Serranochromis longimanus as Least Concern (assessed 1 March 2007 by B.E. Marshall and D. Tweddle), reflecting a wide distribution across the upper Zambezi and Okavango systems and no evidence of major decline. It carries no CITES listing and is regarded as harmless. As a widespread species of an extensive, still largely intact wetland system it is far less exposed than narrow-range endemics, and regional faunal surveys — including the Biodiversity of Angola compilation and the Namibian inland-fishes guide — continue to list it as a present, secure member of these river faunas. The broader context is the gradual pressure on the Okavango–Zambezi wetlands themselves: proposed water abstraction and damming, catchment change in the Angolan headwaters, and the heavy subsistence and commercial gillnet fisheries that target the largemouth breams across the floodplains. None of these is documented as a present threat to this particular species, but they are the backdrop against which the health of the whole Serranochromis guild should be read, and the genus's ongoing taxonomic revision is steadily sharpening how many distinct species that guild actually contains.
