Taxonomy & naming
The fish was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1906 as Herichthys underwoodi, in the cichlid section of the great Biologia Centrali-Americana, on a single specimen (the unique holotype, BMNH 1907.6.28.48, in the Natural History Museum, London). The Catalog of Fishes gives the type locality as Juan Viñas, Costa Rica — a locality on the Atlantic (Reventazón) slope of the country — and the epithet honours Cecil Frank Underwood (1867–1943), the British naturalist-taxidermist who collected in Costa Rica and secured the type. For most of the twentieth century the name was treated as a junior synonym of Tomocichla sieboldii (so listed by Kullander in 2003), folded into the broad, wide-ranging concept of Siebold's cichlid that stretched from Panama through Costa Rica. That changed with the combined molecular and morphological revision of Middle American cichlids by Říčan, Piálek, Dragová & Novák (2016, Vertebrate Zoology 66), which erected the genus Talamancaheros — named for the Talamanca mountains of lower Central America, combined with the old cichlid name Heros — for this rheophilic lineage and split the old 'sieboldii' into two species: true Talamancaheros sieboldii (Kner, 1863) restricted to Panama, and Talamancaheros underwoodi (Regan, 1906) for the Costa Rican populations. The Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Van der Laan) accordingly lists Talamancaheros underwoodi as valid. One wrinkle worth flagging honestly: the species is generally characterized today as the cichlid of Costa Rica's Pacific slope (the Río Grande de Térraba / Diquís and neighbouring drainages), yet the type locality at Juan Viñas lies on the Atlantic slope — a tension between the named type and the modern range concept that reflects how recently, and on how little material, this split was formalized, and that a full redescription has yet to resolve.
Morphology
Talamancaheros underwoodi is a medium-sized, robustly built heroine cichlid of the rheophilic mould — a muscular, somewhat blunt-headed fish with a moderately deep but streamlined, laterally compressed body suited to holding station in current. It is closely similar to its Panamanian sister Talamancaheros sieboldii, which reaches roughly 8–10 in, and the two are separated on subtle differences in coloration, body proportion and meristics rather than any dramatic distinction. The ground colour is a fairly plain brown to olive-grey, often with a greenish or brassy sheen, overlaid by a series of dark vertical bars and dark markings on the flank and caudal peduncle that intensify with mood and breeding condition — an unshowy livery that can flush to strong contrast when a fish is displaying or guarding fry. Sexual dimorphism follows the heroine pattern: mature males grow larger, develop a steeper nuchal profile and longer, more pointed dorsal- and anal-fin tips, while ripe females are rounder-bodied and frequently take on a darker, higher-contrast breeding dress. Because the species was only recently disentangled from sieboldii and lacks a modern redescription, much of the fine morphological detail is still effectively shared with, or read from, its better-documented sister.
Habitat
Talamancaheros underwoodi is a fish of the flowing rivers of Costa Rica. Under the current concept it occupies the Pacific slope — notably the Río Grande de Térraba (Diquís) basin and neighbouring drainages of southern Costa Rica — with the type locality at Juan Viñas on the Atlantic slope and FishBase's Costa Rican checklist also noting Pacific-slope records such as the Río Jesús María and Río Esquinas. Whatever the precise limits, the habitat is rheophilic: moderately to fast-flowing rivers and streams running over rock, gravel and sand, clear and well-oxygenated, the kind of lotic water the genus is built for. These are warm lowland-to-foothill systems, typically in the mid-to-upper 20s °C, with neutral-to-alkaline, moderately hard water reflecting the volcanic and sedimentary geology of the Costa Rican slopes, and a current strong enough to keep the substrate swept. As a current-adapted grazer it holds to flowing reaches and rocky structure rather than the still backwaters favoured by deeper-bodied cichlids, sharing its rivers with other Costa Rican cichlids, characins, poeciliids and catfishes.
Feeding
No dedicated diet study is published for Talamancaheros underwoodi, but the genus is characterized as a rheophilic grazer, and its biology can be read from its sister sieboldii. Talamancaheros are blunt-headed cichlids that work the rocky substrate of flowing water, grazing the aufwuchs — the film of algae, biofilm and the small invertebrates living within it — from stone and gravel surfaces, supplemented by aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and detritus. FishBase places the genus in the mid-range of the food web (trophic level around 3.3) as a flexible secondary consumer rather than a predator of other fishes. In a fast Costa Rican river, underwoodi would be expected to graze periphyton and glean invertebrates from rock and gravel, taking whatever small prey the current delivers and adjusting the balance of algae and animal matter with the season and the reach.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been documented separately for Talamancaheros underwoodi, but the genus — like the rheophilic Central American cichlids generally — is biparental, pair-bonding and territorial when breeding. A male and female form a monogamous bond, select and clean a spawning site (typically a flat rock or sheltered surface among the substrate of a flowing reach) and defend a territory around it together, becoming markedly more aggressive toward intruders during courtship and brood care. Courtship is the standard heroine repertoire of lateral displays, fin-spreading, jaw-locking trials of strength and cooperative substrate-cleaning, with the female taking on heightened breeding coloration as she ripens. As river fish, their breeding tracks the seasonal cycle, favouring the warmer, more stable periods — typically around the onset of the rains, when food is abundant and flows are reliable but not in destructive spate that would sweep away a nest.
Breeding
Talamancaheros underwoodi is, by extension from its genus, an open biparental substrate spawner. The adhesive eggs are laid in rows on a cleaned hard surface — a flat stone or sheltered rock face out of the strongest current — and tended by both parents, the female fanning and directly caring for the eggs while the male patrols the perimeter, in the standard Central American division of labour. After hatching, the wrigglers are moved to one or more pits, and once free-swimming the fry are herded and guarded as a school by both parents for several weeks. Clutch size has not been separately published for underwoodi; rheophilic cichlids of comparable size produce broods of a few hundred to several hundred eggs. As flowing-water spawners, the pair favours sheltered substrate for the nest, and the extended biparental care typical of the lineage protects eggs, larvae and free-swimming fry alike. No specialised cave- or tunnel-nesting is documented; this is a conventional rock-and-substrate breeder of moving water.
In the aquarium
Talamancaheros underwoodi is an uncommon aquarium fish, kept mainly by Central American cichlid specialists and usually encountered under the genus name or, in older stock and literature, as 'Theraps' or 'Tomocichla' sieboldii from Costa Rica. Husbandry follows the template for muscular, flowing-water Central Americans. A pair needs a long tank with a generous footprint — on the order of 59 in and 90 US gal or more — aquascaped with a sand or fine-gravel bottom, plenty of water-worn rock and stone for cover and territory boundaries, and strong, well-oxygenated water movement that mimics its river home. Water should be warm (around 77–82 °F), neutral-to-alkaline (pH roughly 7-8) and moderately hard, with powerful filtration and current. These are moderately aggressive, genuinely territorial cichlids — especially when breeding — so tankmates should be robust river fish of similar size, with room to spread out. Feeding should reflect the grazing natural diet: quality pellets and frozen and live invertebrates, but with a meaningful share of vegetable matter or algae-based foods, since a purely meaty diet does not suit an aufwuchs grazer. The common keeper mistakes are too small or too still a tank and too little vegetable content in the diet.
Conservation
Talamancaheros underwoodi has not been assessed in its own right by the IUCN Red List — FishBase records it as Not Evaluated — which is unsurprising given how recently it was split from sieboldii; the IUCN assessment that exists for the lineage predates the recognition of underwoodi as a separate species. It is a Costa Rican endemic of moderate range, and Costa Rica's relatively strong network of protected areas offers some buffer, but the rivers of both slopes face the familiar regional pressures: agricultural runoff (notably from intensive pineapple, banana and coffee cultivation), sedimentation from land clearance, hydropower and water abstraction, pollution, and the spread of introduced fishes such as tilapias. None of these is documented as a population-level threat to underwoodi specifically — the Not Evaluated status reflects that gap — but a rheophilic, clean-water cichlid in developing river systems is the kind of fish that warrants a formal assessment now that it is recognized as distinct. It carries no CITES listing and is of no commercial-fishery interest beyond the specialist ornamental trade.
