Teleocichla sp. "Xingu III" is an undescribed rapids cichlid from the Rio Xingu in Pará, Brazil — one of several informal Teleocichla forms collected from the fast water of the Volta Grande, the great bend of the Xingu now altered by the Belo Monte dam. It has no formal scientific name: it is a trade-and-field placeholder for a slender, bottom-hugging rheophile of the genus Teleocichla, the small elongate cichlids that live exclusively among the boulders and torrents of Amazonian rapids. Like its described congeners it is a current-loving, crevice-dwelling specialist, and it should be treated strictly as an informal taxon, with no authority, year, or catalogue number attached.

Taxonomy & naming

Teleocichla sp. "Xingu III" is not a formally described species. It has no scientific name, no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, because no taxonomist has published a description of it. It is an informal taxon of the aquarium and field literature, named in the standard convention for undescribed rapids cichlids — the genus Teleocichla, the abbreviation "sp.", and a collection code in quotation marks ("Xingu III"), one of a numbered series of Xingu Teleocichla forms recognised by collectors and aquarists in the manner that field workers such as Rainer Stawikowski labelled the river's then-undescribed forms "Teleocichla sp. 1" and "sp. 2". The genus Teleocichla was erected by Sven O. Kullander in 1988 (Copeia 1988: 196–230) for a suite of six rheophilic species — Teleocichla centrarchus, Teleocichla cinderella, Teleocichla gephyrogramma, T. monogramma, Teleocichla prionogenys, and Teleocichla proselytus — from the rapids of the Rios Xingu, Tapajós, and Tocantins; Kullander coined the name to stress the parallel with the African rapids cichlid Teleogramma, while placing these fishes in the Cichla–Crenicichla lineage of the South American radiation. Several more forms were already known to be undescribed at that time, and the genus has since grown to include later additions such as Teleocichla preta from the Xingu. The honest position is that "Xingu III" is a recognised undescribed Teleocichla of the lower Xingu rapids, allied to the described Xingu species (Teleocichla centrarchus, T. monogramma, Teleocichla gephyrogramma) but not formally diagnosed; no authority or date should be attached to it. (Its placement in Teleocichla is inferred from its body form, habitat, and provenance.)

Morphology

Teleocichla are among the smallest and most distinctively shaped cichlids of the Americas: extremely elongate, almost cylindrical, goby-like fishes built to wedge into crevices and hold position in fast water. Most species in the genus stay under about 3.5 in, with the largest known member (Teleocichla preta) reaching roughly 4.5 in standard length, so "Xingu III" is expected to be a small fish of a few centimetres to perhaps 4 in. The body is slender and tubular, the head somewhat flattened, and the fins arranged for a life spent on or near the bottom in current rather than for open-water swimming; the long-based dorsal and reduced, ventrally-set posture are typical rheophile adaptations. The single most important morphological feature of the genus is the mouth: unlike the large gape of a predatory pike cichlid, Teleocichla have a modest, downturned mouth suited to picking small invertebrates from the substrate — Stawikowski likened it to the mouth of a marine dragonet (family Callionymidae), and it is this "callionymid mouth", as much as the rheophilic body, that let the genus exploit the rapids without competing head-on with Crenicichla. Several species also show a striking flexibility of the pectoral fins, which they swing into a horizontal, wing-like position in strong current so that the flow presses them down onto the rock — an adhesion trick rather than a swimming stroke. Colour in Teleocichla is generally cryptic — browns, greys, and olive tones with darker mottling, bars, or longitudinal stripes that break up the outline against rock and sand, often with fine spotting on the head and fins; territorial males of described species fan out beautifully coloured fins when displaying. Sexual dimorphism in the genus is subtle: males tend to grow somewhat larger and can develop slightly more extended unpaired-fin tips and intensified pattern when in condition, while females are plainer. Because the form is undescribed, no formal counts or diagnostic features separate it from neighbouring Xingu Teleocichla; it is recognised by provenance and pattern.

Habitat

This form lives in the rapids of the lower Rio Xingu, in the Volta Grande ("Big Bend") reach near Altamira in Pará, Brazil — the same fast-water province that produces the Xingu's famous endemic plecos and rheophilic cichlids. Teleocichla are obligate rheophiles, found only in cataracts, channels, and rapids where clear, warm, oxygen-rich water rushes over and between rock and coarse sand. They hold position among boulders, in crevices and under stones, and in the gravel and sand patches between rocks, rather than in still pools or the open channel; Stawikowski's field party found several Xingu Teleocichla species over rocky bottoms in roughly a metre of water in the main river, with adult males guarding small stones, pits, or holes and bolting under flat rocks when threatened. The Xingu is a clearwater highland river, and the in-situ chemistry measured at Altamira during the September low-water season was soft and near-neutral — pH about 6.5, general hardness around 1°dH, carbonate hardness below 1°dH, and conductivity near 120 µS/cm — with water temperatures of 90 °F in the main channel rising to as much as 95 °F in shallow, sun-warmed margins. Strong current and high dissolved oxygen are the defining features of the habitat, which deepens and quickens markedly in the high-water season. The lower Xingu's rapids are exactly the habitat most threatened by the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex, which has diverted and altered flow through the Volta Grande; rheophilic Teleocichla, tied to fast water, are among the fishes most vulnerable to that change.

Feeding

Teleocichla are small benthic invertivores of the rapids. They forage over and among the rocks for aquatic insect larvae (notably the chironomids, mayflies, and blackfly larvae abundant in fast water), other small invertebrates, and associated organic material, picking prey from the substrate and from the algal and biofilm growth on the stones. Their small, elongate form, modest downturned "callionymid" mouth, and bottom-oriented habits suit a fish that picks invertebrates from crevices and rock surfaces rather than ambushing prey in open water — these are emphatically not predatory pike cichlids. Field observers presume Xingu Teleocichla pick small crustaceans from the aufwuchs (the algal and biofilm growth on the stones) or snatch drifting invertebrates while peering from their caves, and gut contents of the larger Xingu forms have included tiny snails taken from cave walls and ceilings. "Xingu III" is expected to follow this genus-typical pattern as a micro-invertivore of the rapids biofilm and interstitial fauna; it is a small crevice-foraging specialist, not a predator of other fishes.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour in Teleocichla is poorly documented in the wild because of how inaccessible their fast-water habitat is, but the genus is understood to comprise cave- or crevice-spawning substrate brooders that form pairs. In the wild the genus is strongly territorial: adult males of the described Xingu species defend small stones, pits, or holes and display with widespread, intensely coloured fins, and larger males are sometimes found in a territory together with several smaller, plainer individuals interpreted as juveniles or females. Species differ in sociability and aggression — some Xingu forms swim in loose groups and tolerate neighbours, others are markedly more pugnacious — and several are syntopic, with up to three species recorded under a single flat rock, so reproductive isolation is thought to rest on behavioural barriers (courtship, coloration, spawning timing) rather than micro-habitat partitioning. German aquarists succeeded in spawning Teleocichla in the late 1980s; the genus pattern is a male and female that pair within a cave or crevice mirroring their natural shelter, with the female leading direct egg-care and courtship taking the form of close-range displays within and around the chosen cavity. "Xingu III" is expected to share this crevice-oriented, pair-forming pattern. The precise courtship sequence, territory size, and timing have not been described for this particular form.

Breeding

By analogy with its described congeners, Teleocichla sp. "Xingu III" is understood to be a cave/crevice-spawning substrate brooder rather than a mouthbrooder — a pattern documented in aquarium spawnings of other Teleocichla, in which eggs are laid on the wall or ceiling of a cave or rock crevice and guarded by the parents, with the female taking the primary share of egg- and larva-tending and the male defending the immediate area. Clutch sizes in these small cichlids are modest, on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a hundred-plus eggs in line with the fish's small body size, though precise figures are not published for this form. After hatching, the larvae are kept within the shelter and guarded until free-swimming. Parental care extends through the early fry stage. (Specific wild breeding data for "Xingu III" are not documented; the account here is genus-typical and flagged as such.)

In the aquarium

Teleocichla are specialist fishes for the experienced rheophile keeper, and the undescribed Xingu forms reach the hobby only sporadically as wild imports. The genus is not for a general community tank: it needs a setup that reproduces the rapids it comes from.

Provide a tank with strong, well-oxygenated flow — powerheads or a river-tank manifold to generate genuine current — over a substrate of rounded gravel, coarse sand, and a structure of smooth boulders and rounded stones arranged to create crevices and caves. Each fish wants its own bolt-hole among the rocks. Water should be warm (around 81–86 °F), soft, and near-neutral (pH roughly 6.0–7.5), and crucially high in dissolved oxygen and very clean: rapids fish have little tolerance for poor water quality or stagnation, so vigorous filtration, good turnover, and consistent maintenance are essential. A tight-fitting cover is wise, as these active, current-oriented fish can dart.

Feed small meaty foods that suit a benthic invertivore — frozen and live bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, and small sinking prepared foods — offered so they reach the bottom where the fish forages. Teleocichla can be territorial toward one another and toward similar bottom-dwellers, so give a group ample rockwork and space, or keep a single pair. Suitable tankmates are other rheophilic, current-tolerant Amazon fishes of compatible temperament; avoid slow-water community fish and anything that will outcompete a small bottom specialist for food. The common mistakes are insufficient flow and oxygenation, too little rock structure for shelter, and lapses in water quality. A blunt caution from the keepers who have tried: wild Teleocichla are notoriously difficult to catch and ship — exporters have historically refused to guarantee live arrival — and they fare badly the moment they are put into still, poorly oxygenated water, so quarantine and acclimation must themselves provide strong current and pristine quality. This is a fish for an experienced rheophile specialist, not a first cichlid.

Conservation

Teleocichla sp. "Xingu III" has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and because it is an undescribed form without a formal scientific name it has no Red List assessment of any kind — no status, no category, no published criteria. That absence should not be read as reassurance. As an obligate rheophile of the lower Xingu rapids, it inhabits precisely the habitat most disrupted by the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex, which has diverted a large share of the river's flow out of the Volta Grande and fundamentally altered the rapids on which fast-water specialists depend. Rheophilic cichlids and plecos of the Xingu are widely flagged as being at risk from this dam, and several described Teleocichla and other rapids endemics face documented threats from it. The conservative position is that this narrowly habitat-restricted form is potentially vulnerable to flow alteration even though it is formally unassessed. No conservation status should ever be fabricated for it; the honest statement is that it is unassessed, rapids-restricted, and exposed to dam-driven habitat loss.
