Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1899 as Paratilapia moeruensis, in the fifth part of his 'Matériaux pour la faune du Congo' (Annales du Musée du Congo, Série Zoologie, vol. 1, p. 119, plate XLV figure 2). The type material is a small series of syntypes split between the Royal Museum for Central Africa at Tervuren (MRAC 216, 218, 219, 222) and the Natural History Museum in London (BMNH 1899.11.27.98–99), all collected at Lake Moero — the older spelling of Lake Mweru — on what is today the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. Boulenger himself moved the fish to Haplochromis in his 1915 'Catalogue of the fresh-water fishes of Africa,' the genus into which the great majority of African riverine and lacustrine haplochromines were swept for most of the twentieth century. In 1979 P. Humphry Greenwood, in the first part of his landmark attempt to break the unwieldy 'genus' Haplochromis into phyletic units, transferred the species to his newly erected genus Thoracochromis. That placement is the one FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes still index it under, although the Catalog currently treats the binomial conservatively as 'Haplochromis moeruensis' pending a comprehensive revision — a reminder that haplochromine generic limits remain genuinely unsettled. The fish carries no established English common name. It sits within the vast Pseudocrenilabrinae, the African cichlid subfamily, and recent molecular work (Schedel and colleagues, 2018 and 2020) confirms that the Lake Mweru haplochromines are an active, partly undescribed species flock rather than a tidy handful of long-settled names.
Morphology
Thoracochromis moeruensis is a small fish: FishBase and the CLOFFA checklist give a maximum length of about 4 in total length, and like most lake haplochromines the typical adult is smaller still. The body is the elongate, laterally compressed, perch-like form shared across the genus, with a terminal mouth and the single nostril on each side that marks the cichlids. Greenwood coined the genus name Thoracochromis (from the Greek thorax, thorakos, a breastplate or cuirass, plus chromis, an old name for a perch-like fish) for haplochromines that share a particular arrangement of scales and squamation on the chest and breast region; that chest scaling, rather than colour, is the technical thread that ties the genus together. Detailed live coloration for this species is poorly documented in the public literature — no photograph accompanies its FishBase record — but congeneric Thoracochromis and the related Mweru haplochromines run to the typical haplochromine palette: silvery to brassy or greenish flanks, often with darker vertical bars or a midlateral stripe, and breeding males that intensify in colour and carry the yellow-to-orange ocellated 'egg-spots' on the anal fin that are diagnostic of the tribe. Sexual dimorphism in haplochromines of this kind is the rule: males grow somewhat larger and far more colourful in breeding dress, while females stay a cryptic silvery-grey, the better to disappear while carrying young. Specific dimorphism data for Thoracochromis moeruensis has not been published, so this follows the strongly consistent genus-typical pattern.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Luapula–Mweru system of the Upper Congo basin. Its core range is Lake Mweru itself — a shallow rift-associated lake of roughly 5,0 mi² straddling the DR Congo–Zambia border at about 3018 ft elevation — extending upstream into the middle Luapula River, the lake's main southern inflow. FishBase notes the fish from Lake Mweru up to the middle Luapula in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and flags its presence in Zambia as needing confirmation, though the IUCN assessment and the lake's shared border place it in both countries. Lake Mweru is fed by the Luapula and Kalungwishi rivers and drained northward by the Luvua, ultimately part of the Congo system rather than the Rift Valley great lakes; it is comparatively shallow, with much of the basin only a few metres to a few tens of metres deep, so a benthopelagic haplochromine like this one lives across the shallow inshore and littoral zones rather than at any great depth. In-situ water chemistry reported for Lake Mweru is warm and spans a wide pH band — aquarist field notes and importers cite a pH range from roughly 6.4 to 9.3 and water temperatures of about 70–84 °F (70–84 °F) — reflecting a productive lake whose inshore chemistry shifts between the soft, tea-stained inflowing river water and more mineral-rich open-lake conditions. The fish is therefore best understood as a warm, soft-to-moderately-alkaline shallow-water species.
Feeding
No published gut-content study isolates the diet of Thoracochromis moeruensis specifically. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.3, which places it as a small generalist carnivore/omnivore rather than a specialist herbivore or piscivore — the broad ecological default for a small lake haplochromine of this build. In practice that means a diet assembled from aquatic insect larvae and other small benthic invertebrates, zooplankton, and incidental plant and detrital material taken from the substrate and the water column of the inshore zone. The Lake Mweru haplochromine community as a whole shows the trophic spread typical of an African cichlid radiation — sand-sifters, snail-crushers, micro-predators and the like — and a small, unspecialised Thoracochromis most likely occupies the middle of that range, gleaning small prey wherever the littoral provides it. Until a dietary study is done this remains an inference from morphology, trophic modelling and the habits of close relatives rather than a directly observed diet.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been described for this species in the wild, but its membership in the haplochromine tribe makes the broad pattern predictable, because haplochromine mating is one of the most stereotyped systems among cichlids. These fish are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders with no lasting pair bond. A ripe male takes up and defends a small territory or spawning site, develops his brightest breeding colours, and courts passing females with lateral displays and quivering, showing off the egg-spot markings on his anal fin. Spawning follows the classic 'egg-dummy' circuit: the female lays a small clutch of eggs and immediately takes them into her mouth, then nips at the egg-spots on the displaying male's anal fin as if they were stray eggs, prompting him to release milt that fertilises the clutch already inside her mouth. The male's role ends at fertilisation; he forms no bond with the female and may court and spawn with several in succession. For Thoracochromis moeruensis the specifics — territory size, display repertoire, any colour signals unique to the species — are undocumented, and this account describes the well-established genus- and tribe-typical behaviour rather than direct observation of this fish.
Breeding
Thoracochromis moeruensis is a maternal (ovophilic) mouthbrooder: FishBase records 'mouthbrooding by females' for the species, the only reproductive datum published for it. As in haplochromines generally, the female carries the fertilised eggs and then the developing larvae in her buccal cavity for a period of roughly two to three weeks, during which she does not feed, periodically rotating and churning the brood to keep it oxygenated. The fry are released as fully formed, free-swimming young that can feed themselves from the start, and for the first days after release the female typically allows them to bolt back into her mouth when threatened before weaning them off this protection. No clutch count has been published for this particular species; small Thoracochromis and comparable lake haplochromines of around 3–4 in typically produce modest clutches on the order of a few tens of eggs (roughly 20–60), a genus-typical figure offered here for scale rather than as a measured value for Thoracochromis moeruensis. Parental care is entirely maternal and ends not long after the fry are weaned; the male contributes no care. Breeding triggers in the wild are undocumented but, as with most shallow-lake haplochromines, are likely tied to warmth and the productive inshore conditions of the warm season.
In the aquarium
Thoracochromis moeruensis is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby as a named, deliberately kept species, and there is no published husbandry or breeding account specific to it. What the hobby does have is recent, hard-won experience with the wider Lake Mweru cichlid fauna: from 2018 onward a handful of shipments (notably those brought in through Oliver Lucanus and worked with by members of the New England Cichlid Association) introduced wild Lake Mweru Serranochromis, Pseudocrenilabrus, Sargochromis, Orthochromis and Tilapia to dedicated keepers, several of which turned out to be undescribed species. The lessons from that fauna are the right starting point for anyone who encounters this fish. Keepers report maintaining Mweru cichlids successfully at a pH of about 7.5–8.0 and temperatures around 82 °F (low-to-mid-80s °F), over fine cichlid sand, with rockwork and terracotta pots or caves for cover, no plants required, strong sponge or canister filtration, and weekly water changes of around 40 percent. For a small mouthbrooder of this size a modest tank — on the order of 20–30 US gal for a group, larger if combined with the boisterous Serranochromis and Pseudocrenilabrus of the same lake — would be appropriate, stocked as a single male with several females to spread his attention and reduce harassment, the standard arrangement for harem-spawning haplochromines. A varied diet of small frozen and prepared foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, quality flake and small pellets) suits a generalist of its trophic level. The honest summary is that this is a fish for the specialist who has obtained wild Mweru stock and is prepared to work out its needs by analogy to its better-studied lake-mates; it is not a fish with an established place in the trade.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Thoracochromis moeruensis (under the name Haplochromis moeruensis) as Vulnerable, criterion B1ab(v), in an assessment by T. Moelants dated 16 February 2009. The listing rests on the species' restricted range within the Lake Mweru–Luapula system and on fishing pressure: the assessment identifies intensive overfishing of Lake Mweru — including the use of drawnets — as the principal threat, in a lake that supports an important commercial and subsistence fishery (notably the 'chisense' small-pelagic fishery and a broad artisanal net fishery). The population trend was recorded as unknown at the time of assessment. The wider context is a shallow, heavily fished trans-boundary lake whose endemic cichlid radiation is only partly described, so that several of its species — including newly recognised, still-undescribed forms — face pressure before they have even been formally catalogued. The species is not listed by CITES. Because the assessment now dates back more than fifteen years and predates much of the recent taxonomic work on the Mweru flock, its status would benefit from reassessment, but Vulnerable remains the current published category.
