Taxonomy & naming
The firemouth was described in 1918 by Walter L. Brind in the hobbyist magazine Aquatic Life, as Thorichthys helleri meeki, on aquarium stock said to trace to "cenotes" (sinkholes) near Progreso on the north coast of Yucatán, Mexico (holotype USNM 79243); Brind called it the "scarlet chanchito" and described its colour in life as "a brilliant scarlet suffusion and striping extending from the throat and lower gill covers back and beyond the extremities of the pectoral fins." Brind dedicated the fish to Seth Eugene Meek (1859–1914), the Field Museum ichthyologist who had erected the genus Thorichthys in 1904. For most of the twentieth century the species was shuffled into the catch-all genus Cichlasoma and was universally sold and written about as Cichlasoma meeki; the modern combination Thorichthys meeki was restored as the genus Thorichthys was resurrected for the firemouth group (Burgess 2000; Kullander in Reis et al. 2003). One older name, Cichlasoma hyorhynchum Hubbs 1936 (described from the Río San Pedro de Mártir in the Usumacinta system, Guatemala), is treated as a junior synonym; its absorption is what extended the accepted range of the firemouth from northern Yucatán into a large area of southern Mexico, Belize and part of Guatemala. The genus name itself records a behaviour rather than an anatomy: Meek combined Greek throsko, "to leap," with ichthys, "fish," because the firemouth's relatives, he wrote, were "attracted by anything which enters the water and will jump out of it in an apparently playful mood … as soon as your finger touches the water, they will come leaping towards you" — though at least one latter-day field biologist who has collected and kept Thorichthys for decades has confessed he has never once seen them leap. Local Mexican fishers call Thorichthys species "Toritos" ("little bulls"), for the short, repeated advances and retreats of their gill-cover threat display, a name that happens to echo the sound of "Thorichthys" itself. Within the Middle American cichlids (tribe Heroini) Thorichthys is a well-supported natural group, historically split into a five-species "aureus" lineage and a smaller natural group containing meeki, Thorichthys affinis and Thorichthys pasionis; the last of these is so close to meeki — differing mainly in its yellow rather than red ground colour and in distribution — that it is sold in the hobby as the "Yellow Meeki."
Morphology
Thorichthys meeki is a deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid of moderate size. FishBase gives a maximum of about 6.5 in total length, though most wild and aquarium fish are smaller, with a common length nearer 4–4.5 in; males grow larger and heavier-bodied than females. The ground colour is a soft pearl-grey to fawn, overlaid with rows of iridescent blue-green spangles on the flanks and fins and a series of faint dark blotches along the midline. The diagnostic feature is the underside of the head: the lower jaw, throat and a strip running back along the belly are washed in vivid scarlet to fire-orange, most intense in breeding males. Each gill cover carries a black, light-ringed ocellus — a false eyespot — and the membranes of the gular region can be inflated. When the fish lowers its branchiostegal membranes and spreads the operculae in a frontal display, the red throat, the flared "collar" and the twin eyespots combine to make the head look enormous and the fish far more formidable than it is.
Field observers have documented two loose ecotypes across the range: fish from slow, sandy rivers in Campeche run a slightly more elongated body with more blue speckling on the flanks and red that, while intense, is not as saturated as in lagoon populations; fish from the shallow, muddy Tabasco lagoons around Villahermosa tend to show the deepest, most saturated red of all. Colour intensity is also tied to condition and origin in a way worth knowing: farmed "import" stock, historically bred in large numbers in Southeast Asia for the trade, tends to show its red colouring constantly, while genuinely wild-caught fish typically flash the full red only when courting or breeding, staying comparatively subdued the rest of the time — though wild fish given good food and housing will develop the same vivid colour. Fish taken from very turbid or mineral-rich waters have also been described as showing an unremarkable, washed-out coloration, at least until conditions settle. Sexual dimorphism is real but subtle: males are larger, develop more extended dorsal- and anal-fin tips, and show the deepest red; ripe females are rounder and often duller, and unlike several congeners meeki shows no strong female-specific flank blotch.
Habitat
The firemouth is a fish of the Atlantic-slope lowlands of the Yucatán Peninsula and adjacent Central America, native to the Usumacinta River drainage, the Belize River drainage and associated coastal systems of Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. It is a habitat generalist of warm, slow-moving water, and field surveys describe two distinct settings. Around Villahermosa in Tabasco, where much of the surrounding tropical forest has been cleared for cattle pasture, T. meeki crowds in huge numbers into shallow, seasonal lagoons and ponds no more than about a metre deep, with muddy bottoms, murky water, a cover of floating water lilies, and a litter of fallen leaves and branches on the bottom; these pools regularly dry out in the dry season and are restocked by fish from overflowing neighbours once the rains return, and water temperatures there have been recorded from 82 °F up to over 90 °F. Sharing these ponds are Amphilophus robertsoni, Nandopsis octofasciata, N. salvini, N. friedrichsthali, N. urophthalmus, Paratheraps cf. bisfasciatus, Petenia splendida and Thorichthys pasionis, alongside livebearers (Poecilia velifera, Belonesox belizanus), the catfish Rhamdia guatemalensis, characins and gobies. In the slower-flowing rivers of Campeche (the Chompán, Candelaria and Champotón), by contrast, T. meeki occupies sandy reaches littered with leaves and driftwood, alongside Amphilophus robertsoni, Herichthys pearsei, Paratheraps heterospilum, P. synspilum, Nandopsis salvini, N. friedrichsthali, N. urophthalmus, Petenia splendida, Thorichthys pasionis and T. helleri, with dry-season visibility ranging from about one to five metres — though some tributaries run far more turbid and mineral-rich, with conductivity measured above 2,000 µS/cm and visibility under 4 in. Overall reported water chemistry is broad and tends toward the hard, alkaline conditions typical of the limestone Yucatán: FishBase lists pH about 6.5–7.5, though firemouths clearly thrive across a considerably wider window of temperature and mineral content than that figure alone suggests. The species is hardy and adaptable enough to have established feral populations well outside its native range — it is recorded as introduced in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Colombia, almost always as a consequence of the aquarium trade.
Feeding
Thorichthys meeki is a benthic omnivore that feeds low on the food web; FishBase assigns it a trophic level of about 2.0, and notes it is omnivorous but feeds mainly on algae. Like the other firemouths it is a sand-sifter, taking in mouthfuls of soft substrate, sorting out edible material — small invertebrates, insect larvae, crustaceans, worms and organic detritus — and expelling the cleaned grit through the mouth and gill openings. The protrusible, slightly down-turned mouth is built for picking and grubbing over the bottom rather than for seizing active prey, and the firemouth's foraging keeps it working the leaf-litter, sediment and vegetation of quiet shallows. In the community it is a small generalist, neither a top predator nor a specialist, occupying the same bottom-feeding guild as many of its Central American relatives.
Mating
Firemouths are seasonally monogamous and form pair bonds in which both partners share territory defence and brood care. Pair formation is preceded by the elaborate frontal and lateral displays for which the species is famous: prospective mates and rivals are met with a flared, red-throated head-on threat, gill covers spread and eyespots presented, often escalating to mouth-wrestling between evenly matched fish. These same displays double as courtship, the male's blazing throat advertising condition to the female. Once paired, the two fish select and clean a spawning site and defend a territory around it, becoming markedly more aggressive toward intruders. Outside the breeding season firemouths are comparatively peaceful and somewhat timid, relying more on bluff than on bite — the spectacular display is largely a way of avoiding actual combat.
Breeding
Thorichthys meeki is a biparental, open-substrate spawner. The pair deposits eggs on a cleaned hard surface — a flat stone, a piece of submerged wood, or a shallow pit excavated in the substrate — with FishBase citing clutches of roughly 100 to 500 eggs guarded by both parents. After hatching the larvae are moved to one or more shallow pits in the sand, and the parents continue to guard and shepherd the wrigglers, fanning them and moving them between pits until they are free-swimming. Both parents then escort the school of fry, herding them through the shallows and snapping them up to spit them back into safety when danger threatens; the female typically stays closest to the young while the male patrols the territory perimeter. This relatively undemanding, well-defined parental routine is one reason the firemouth is so often recommended as a first "big cichlid" to breed — a determined pair will spawn readily and raise their own young in a community-sized aquarium.
In the aquarium
The firemouth is among the most popular medium-sized cichlids in the hobby, and deservedly so: it is hardy, handsome, inexpensive and far better behaved than most Central American cichlids of comparable size. A single fish or pair is comfortable in a tank of about 30–40 US gal (FishBase gives a minimum aquarium length of 39.5 in), with more room needed if other robust fish are present or if a pair is allowed to breed. The aquarium should provide a soft sand bed for the fish's natural sifting behaviour, plenty of structure — rock, driftwood, terracotta caves — to break sightlines and anchor territories, and some open swimming space at the front.
Water chemistry is not demanding. Firemouths do well across a wide range, but conditions reflecting their hard, alkaline native waters suit them best: temperature about 75–82 °F, pH roughly 7.0–8.0, and moderate to hard water. They are sensitive to poor water quality over time, so reliable filtration and routine partial water changes matter more than chasing exact numbers. Feeding is trivial — they take quality sinking pellets and flake along with frozen and live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and small crustaceans; some vegetable content rounds out the diet. Worth knowing if buying for colour: most firemouths in the trade are commercially farmed rather than wild-caught, and farmed stock tends to hold its red colouring at all times, whereas a genuinely wild-collected fish may show comparatively little red outside courtship or breeding condition — not a sign of poor health, just a difference in how the colour is expressed.
Temperament is the firemouth's selling point. Outside of breeding it is one of the more peaceful cichlids of its size, often shy, and relies on its flaring red-throat display rather than on real aggression. It mixes well with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates — larger tetras and barbs, rainbowfish, livebearers too large to eat, peaceful catfish, and other even-tempered Central Americans — and is a mainstay of community-style "New World" tanks. The one caveat is breeding: a spawning pair becomes territorial and will drive other fish away from their corner, so either provide enough space and broken sightlines or be prepared to move tankmates. The fins can be a target for persistent nippers, and very boisterous large cichlids will bully them, so the company is best chosen with the firemouth's bluffing, non-combative nature in mind.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Thorichthys meeki as Least Concern (assessed 3 October 2018, published 2019). The species is widespread across the Atlantic lowlands of the Yucatán and adjacent Central America, abundant, ecologically flexible and tolerant of disturbed and modified habitats — qualities reflected in the ease with which it has founded feral populations on several continents. It is of no commercial fishery interest but is one of the most heavily traded ornamental cichlids in the world, the great majority of trade fish being captive-bred rather than wild-caught. No species-specific threats are identified. The broader pressures on its native rivers — pollution, water extraction, habitat alteration and the spread of invasive species across the Usumacinta and Yucatán drainages — are the backdrop against which its currently secure status should be read, but none presently endanger this adaptable little cichlid.
