Tristramella simonis, the short jaw tristramella, is a maternal mouthbrooding cichlid endemic to the Jordan–Levant basin and best known from the Sea of Galilee (Lake Tiberias / Lake Kinneret) in northern Israel. It is the last surviving member of the small genus Tristramella, a Levantine lineage whose other named forms have largely vanished — its congener Tristramella sacra, the long jaw tristramella, was declared Extinct by the IUCN in 2014 after going unseen since 1990. Described by Albert Günther in 1864 as Chromis simonis, the species is a quiet, plankton- and plant-feeding lake fish rather than a colourful showpiece, but it carries an outsized scientific and cultural weight: it shares its waters with the tilapias long associated with the Biblical 'St. Peter's fish', and its fate is bound up with the falling water levels and heavy human demands on one of the most contested freshwater bodies on Earth.

Taxonomy & naming

The short jaw tristramella was described by the German-born British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1864 as Chromis simonis, on material from Lake Tiberias (the Sea of Galilee), Israel — the holdings that the Reverend Henry Baker Tristram and others had brought back from the Holy Land. The name is anchored by a lectotype in the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1864.8.20.10), with a paralectotype (BMNH 1864.8.20.11) alongside it; the lectotype was formally selected by Krupp & Schneider in their 1989 revision of the Jordan-drainage fishes. (Some databases cite the description year as 1865, reflecting the publication date of the relevant part of the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, but the Catalog of Fishes fixes it at 1864.)

The genus Tristramella was erected later, by the British cichlid authority Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1942, to separate this Levantine radiation from the broad 'Chromis' and tilapiine assemblages in which the early describers had lumped it; simonis is the type species. Two further nominal members complicate the picture. Chromis magdalenae Lortet, 1883 (a name evoking Mary Magdalene or the lakeside village of Magdala) was long treated as a synonym or subspecies but has since been resurrected as the valid — and now extinct — Tristramella magdelenae. And within simonis itself, two subspecies have been recognised: the nominate Tristramella simonis simonis (Günther, 1864) and Tristramella simonis intermedia Steinitz & Ben-Tuvia, 1959, the latter described as morphologically intermediate between the nominate form and magdalenae and now regarded as extinct in recent IUCN listings. The fish sits in the African cichlid subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, an outlier of that lineage stranded at the northern edge of the rift system that the Jordan valley represents.

The epithet simonis was never explained by Günther. It is most plausibly the genitive of Simon — the original name of the apostle Saint Peter — and so a quiet nod to the famous Gospel episode in which Peter draws a coin-bearing fish from the Sea of Galilee. The 'St. Peter's fish' of that story is traditionally identified as the tilapia Sarotherodon galilaeus, but some have argued for this species, whose mouth is large enough to carry a coin; the name preserves that ambiguity.

Morphology

Tristramella simonis is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid of plain, workmanlike appearance rather than bright nuptial colour. FishBase gives a maximum size of about 10 in total length, and the diagnostic literature (the Handbook of Freshwater Fishes of West Asia) records specimens to roughly 10 in standard length; most fish taken in the fishery are considerably smaller, with length at first maturity around 5 in. Coloration is muted — silvery to greyish or olive flanks — and breeding males turn a pale grey or pinkish white, conspicuously without the bold spots, vermiculation or red chest that mark some related Levantine and African cichlids.

The genus name 'short jaw' captures the feature that separates simonis from its lost long-jawed congener sacra: the lower jaw projects only slightly. Other diagnostic characters distinguishing it from the region's cichlids include bicuspid outer and tricuspid inner teeth, cycloid scales, three anal spines, a chest, belly and isthmus clothed in small scales, 10–12 gill rakers on the lower limb of the first arch, and the absence of egg-spot ocelli on the anal fin. Sexual dimorphism is modest and mostly seasonal rather than dramatic: males assume the pale nuptial dress noted above, while females — as the mouthbrooding sex — are recognised in breeding condition by a distended buccal cavity rather than by any permanent colour difference. The two recognised subspecies were separated on subtle proportional and meristic grounds rather than on coloration.

Habitat

The species is a Levantine endemic of the Jordan River system and adjacent inland basins, straddling the modern frontier between Israel and Syria. Its stronghold is Lake Kinneret (Lake Tiberias / the Sea of Galilee), the lowest freshwater lake on Earth at roughly 689 ft below sea level and Israel's principal surface-water reservoir. Historically it also occupied Lake Hula and its marshes to the north — a population extirpated when that wetland was drained in the 1950s — and, on the Syrian side, the springs and lakes of the Damascus basin (now lost to desiccation), Lake Muzairib, the Dara'a reservoir and a canal at Al Asha'ari. It has additionally turned up as an introduced or range-expanding element in the Orontes (Asi) drainage and the Nahr al-Kabir of coastal Syria.

Within these waters it is a benthopelagic fish of lakes, reservoirs, spring pools and slow spring-fed streams and canals — fresh to slightly brackish, warm, subtropical conditions. It is not a deep-water specialist: the IUCN assessment notes that in Lake Kinneret it is not pelagic but keeps mostly to the shores, with its effective habitat concentrated along the roughly 33 mi of shoreline rather than across the open lake. Reliable, species-specific in-situ chemistry is sparse in the primary literature, but the broader Kinneret setting — a warm monomictic lake whose surface waters run from the high teens in winter to the high twenties Celsius in summer, with hard, alkaline, well-buffered water typical of the limestone Jordan valley — defines the envelope this fish has evolved within.

Feeding

Tristramella simonis sits low on the food web, and FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 2.0 — essentially that of a primary consumer. It feeds chiefly on phytoplankton and higher aquatic plant material, taking zooplankton and small invertebrates only secondarily. This makes it one of the more herbivorous-leaning cichlids of the lake, contrasting with its extinct congener Tristramella sacra, which was reported to take zooplankton and small fish, and with the more carnivorous demersal species of the basin.

A plant- and plankton-based diet of this kind ties the fish to the productive, sunlit littoral and surface waters where algal and macrophyte food is abundant — consistent with its shoreline habit. As a grazer and filterer near the base of the lake's energy flow, it functions less as a predator than as a converter of primary production into fish biomass, a role that historically made it part of the netted catch in Lake Kinneret. Its low trophic position also means its fortunes track the lake's primary productivity and water quality closely; shifts in nutrient loading, algal community and water level all bear directly on its food base.

Mating

Detailed accounts of courtship in the wild are thin for this species, as they are for most of the Jordan-basin cichlids, but the broad pattern is clear from its reproductive biology. Breeding is seasonal, running from March to August, and individuals spawn repeatedly — at least two or three times — across that window rather than in a single annual event. The onset of the nuptial male's pale grey-to-pinkish coloration signals readiness, and pairing and spawning are concentrated in the warm littoral zone the fish occupies year-round.

Because Tristramella is a mouthbrooder, the pre-spawning behaviour centres on a short bout of pairing and egg transfer rather than the prolonged territorial nest-tending of substrate-spawning cichlids. After the eggs are fertilised they are gathered into the buccal cavity, and from that point the social interaction shifts from courtship to the mother's solitary care of the clutch. Whether the male contributes at all to brooding has been reported inconsistently in the literature — see the Breeding section — but the dominant signal across sources is a female-led, maternal system in which the male's role is limited to fertilisation and, at most, brief shared guarding.

Breeding

Tristramella simonis is a mouthbrooder, and the consistent description across the IUCN assessment and the regional handbooks is of a female (maternal) mouthbrooder: the female incubates the fertilised eggs and then the developing young inside her mouth, fasting through the brooding period and releasing free-swimming fry once they are developed. Some sources (FishBase, and certain handbook entries) hedge this as 'maternal mouthbrooder or both partners participate in brooding', so a limited biparental contribution cannot be entirely ruled out, but the weight of evidence favours maternal care. The breeding season spans March to August, with each fish spawning several times within it.

Species-specific clutch counts are not well documented in the accessible primary literature; mouthbrooding cichlids trade fecundity for parental investment, and brooded clutches in fishes of this size are characteristically modest — on the order of tens to low hundreds of comparatively large eggs rather than the thousands a substrate-spawner might scatter — but no precise figure for simonis should be treated as firmly established here. The species reaches first maturity at around 5 in, relatively early in life, which together with repeat spawning gives it a medium resilience and a population doubling time estimated at roughly 1.4 to 4.4 years. The dedicated Syrian reproductive study of Dib, Saad & Ali (2021), on the Nahr al-Kabir population, is the most focused modern source on its reproductive cycle and fecundity.

In the aquarium

Tristramella simonis is essentially not an aquarium fish in any normal sense. It has no presence in the ornamental trade, no body of hobbyist husbandry literature, and no established commercial supply: it is a localised Levantine endemic of conservation concern, known to the public mainly through Lake Kinneret's fishery and through specimens held in regional institutions such as the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo's aquarium. Anyone encountering it in captivity is far more likely to be a fisheries biologist or a conservation aquarium than a home aquarist.

If it were to be kept — in a research or ex-situ conservation context — its requirements would follow plainly from its ecology. It is a fish of warm, hard, alkaline fresh-to-slightly-brackish water, so a maintenance envelope mirroring Lake Kinneret would mean temperatures broadly in the low-to-high twenties Celsius, a distinctly alkaline pH (roughly 7.5–8.5), and moderately hard, well-buffered water rather than the soft acidic conditions favoured by many tropical cichlids. As a 10 in, shoreline-dwelling, plant- and plankton-feeding lake fish it would need a large tank with open swimming room, and a diet built around vegetable and algal matter supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrates rather than a meat-heavy regime. None of this should be read as a keeping recommendation: there is no hobby case for removing a Vulnerable, narrowly-distributed endemic from the wild, and the honest summary is that this is a fish to study and conserve in place, not to stock.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Tristramella simonis as Vulnerable (VU), under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv), in an assessment by Menachem Goren dated 23 January 2013 and published in 2014. This was a downgrade from the Least Concern status of the 2006 listing, and the assessment is flagged as needing updating. The reasoning is geographic: the species' extent of occurrence is estimated at only about 1,0 mi² and its area of occupancy at around 227 mi², spread across six to ten small, largely independent subpopulations, with continuing decline documented in range, habitat quality and number of locations. In Lake Kinneret itself the population is regarded as relatively abundant and stable, sustained within a closely controlled commercial fishery that is not at present considered a serious threat; it is everywhere else that the species is in trouble.

Those pressures are the defining story of the Jordan–Levant basin. The fish was extirpated from Lake Hula when that wetland was drained in the 1950s, and from the Damascus-basin lakes as they dried out; the surviving Syrian spring and reservoir populations are small and declining, squeezed by surface- and groundwater abstraction for domestic and agricultural use and by climate-driven reductions in rainfall. Lake Kinneret — the lowest freshwater lake on the planet and the source of a large share of Israel's drinking water — has itself endured repeated, severe water-level declines under the combined weight of extraction, drought and a warming, drying regional climate, conditions that compress and degrade exactly the shoreline habitat this species depends on. Fishery landings of the lake's cichlids have fluctuated and crashed over recent decades for a tangle of reasons including overfishing, cormorant predation and ecological shifts, underscoring how stressed the system is.

The cautionary contrast lives in the same genus. Tristramella sacra, the long jaw tristramella, was a Sea of Galilee endemic listed as Critically Endangered in 2006 and then declared Extinct by the IUCN in 2014, having not been recorded since 1990 despite targeted searches of the lake and its fish markets; the loss is widely linked to the destruction of its breeding habitat as water levels fell. The subspecies Tristramella simonis intermedia, and the resurrected species Tristramella magdelenae, are likewise treated as extinct in recent listings. Against that backdrop, the persistence of Tristramella simonis rests almost entirely on the still-functioning Kinneret population — and on whether that lake's water level and littoral habitat can be managed for the fish as well as for the people who drink from it. The IUCN explicitly recommends better research on the species' Syrian distribution, which remains poorly documented.
