Taxonomy & naming
Wallaceochromis signatus was described in 2004 by the Austrian ichthyologist Anton Lamboj as Pelvicachromis signatus, together with a second new species, Pelvicachromis rubrolabiatus, both collected from the Kolente basin of Guinea (Lamboj, 2004; Zootaxa 454: 1–12). For more than a decade the species sat within Pelvicachromis, the popular 'krib' genus, though ichthyologists had long noted that the humilis–rubrolabiatus–signatus cluster differed from true Pelvicachromis (the Pelvicachromis pulcher group) in several osteological and meristic characters.
In 2016, Lamboj, Trummer and Metscher erected the new genus Wallaceochromis to accommodate precisely these three species, publishing the revision in Zootaxa 4144(1): 124–130. The new genus is distinguished from Pelvicachromis sensu stricto by the number and arrangement of tubular infraorbital ossicles (two contiguous rather than three with a gap), a straighter, more steeply sloping dorsal head profile with a low supraoccipital crest, and higher abdominal vertebral counts (14–15 versus 13–14). The current valid combination Wallaceochromis signatus (Lamboj, 2004) retains the original author and year in parentheses, as the species was moved from its original genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer/CAS) is followed here as the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Wallaceochromis signatus is a small, moderately deep-bodied cichlid reaching a maximum of 3 in standard length (SL) in males; females are measurably smaller and more compact. The ground colour of the head and body is brown, with the dorsal half noticeably darker than the pale ventral region — a pattern consistent with a fish that spends much of its time close to shaded stream substrates.
The most diagnostic features are the fin markings used to name the species: males carry numerous black spots in the dorsal fin — a pattern of markings (Latin signatus, 'wearing marks') unique to this species among the three Wallaceochromis — while females bear a bold black spot on the caudal peduncle and, variably, one or two additional black spots in the dorsal fin. Females also develop a patch of purple or violet colouration on the ventral surface during reproductive condition, a trait paralleling the belly colouration seen in female Pelvicachromis pulcher (kriben) but expressed less extensively. Both sexes can display seven to eight dark vertical body bars in certain behavioural situations — a pattern that appears to be a genus-level character shared with Wallaceochromis humilis and Wallaceochromis rubrolabiatus. Unpaired fins are generally brownish. Males develop slightly more elongated dorsal and anal fin tips than females.
Habitat
The known range of Wallaceochromis signatus is narrow: all specimens in the scientific literature originate from the Bandi River, a tributary of the Kolente (also known as the Great Scarcies) basin in the Republic of Guinea. The type locality lies on the forest road between Kangasili and Sougeta at approximately 10°11'N, 12°28'W — a stream within the Upper Guinean forest zone, one of the most biodiverse and threatened freshwater regions in West Africa.
The broader Wallaceochromis humilis group inhabits a coastal-forest corridor from the Kolente basin of Guinea through Sierra Leone to the St. Paul and St. John rivers of western Liberia. Within this zone, Wallaceochromis species occupy small to medium-sized streams shaded by gallery forest, where the canopy limits light penetration and allochthonous leaf litter and woody debris accumulate on the substrate. These are soft, acidic, tea-coloured waters — conductivities are low, pH typically in the range of 5.5–7.0, and temperatures in the 72–81 °F band characteristic of Guinea's forest lowlands. Sand and leaf litter predominate on the streambed, with submerged roots and fallen branches providing the structural complexity these secretive cichlids favour. Field water-chemistry data specific to the Bandi River are not published; values cited here reflect the regional pattern for Upper Guinean forest streams and hobbyist measurements from export localities.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study of Wallaceochromis signatus exists in the primary literature. Inferences from its trophic-level estimate (3.3 on FishBase, indicating a mix of plant matter and animal prey) and from field observations of related Wallaceochromis species suggest a generalist microinvertebrate-and-detritivore feeding style typical of small rheophilous cichlids in West African forest streams.
In its stream habitat, the species likely forages across the leaf-litter substrate and over biofilm-covered woody surfaces, taking small insect larvae (chironomids, ephemenopterans), microcrustaceans, worms and organic detritus. In captivity, hobbyists report acceptance of dried foods including vegetable-based formulas, along with frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, mysis and mosquito larvae — a diet consistent with an omnivorous, substrate-foraging cichlid. As with much of the biology of this species, comprehensive wild-diet data are lacking; the account here is necessarily based on analogy with related species.
Mating
Wallaceochromis signatus is a monogamous, pair-bonding species. A persistent pair bond is formed before spawning, and the pair cooperatively selects and defends a territory centred on a suitable sheltered cavity. Courtship behaviour has not been documented in detail in the field, and no wild-breeding record appears in the published literature; the account here is drawn from aquarium observations and from the parallel behaviour of the closely related Wallaceochromis humilis and Wallaceochromis rubrolabiatus.
In captivity, pairs are formed through mutual courtship display, with both sexes showing intensified colouration — the female's ventral purple patch and the male's spotted dorsal fin become more vivid. The pair bond can be strong: hobbyist experience suggests that Wallaceochromis signatus, like other members of the genus, is calmer in temperament than larger Pelvicachromis species, though both partners will vigorously defend the nest cave against intruders once spawning is imminent. The species epithet and the black fin markings that inspired it are thus behaviourally relevant: the vivid male dorsal spots almost certainly play a role in courtship signalling and mate assessment.
Breeding
Spawning follows the secretive cave-brooding pattern shared across Wallaceochromis and the broader Pelvicachromis/chromidotilapiine assemblage. The female selects a cave with a small entrance — a hollow under a submerged root, a leaf pocket, or a rocky cavity — and deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the interior surface, typically the ceiling or a shaded wall.
Breeding-role division between the sexes broadly mirrors the pattern in kribs: the female takes the primary role of egg-tending (cleaning, fanning) and early larval care within the cave, while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory. Once the fry become free-swimming — at roughly 8–10 days post-hatching in captivity — both parents guard the school together. Field data on clutch size, egg-to-fry development times, and the duration of parental care in wild Bandi River populations are not available in the published literature; figures cited here are from aquarium husbandry accounts. The species has been bred in captivity, though it remains uncommon in the hobby — a reflection of its restricted export range rather than any unusual difficulty in reproduction.
In the aquarium
Wallaceochromis signatus is a rewarding but uncommon aquarium species, occasionally available in specialist West African cichlid circles and through wholesalers with Guinea export connections. It is small and relatively calm — hobbyists consider it less aggressive than the larger Pelvicachromis species — but it will defend a spawning territory firmly, and tankmate choice should respect that.
The minimum recommended aquarium volume is around 30 US gal for a pair, fitted with a soft sandy substrate (into which the fish will dig), leaf litter, coconut-shell or clay caves, and subdued lighting to replicate the forest-stream environment. Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral: pH 5.5–7.0, hardness approaching zero (GH 1–8 dGH), temperature 72–81 °F. These parameters are not merely theoretical — the species originates from low-conductivity Guinea forest streams, and hard alkaline water carries a health risk for long-term maintenance. Regular partial water changes with soft, aged water are recommended. Diet in captivity presents no difficulty: the fish accepts prepared foods, frozen invertebrates and plant-based flakes. Its rarity rather than its husbandry demands accounts for its limited presence in the hobby.
Conservation
Wallaceochromis signatus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List (status: Not Evaluated as of 2025). This is a reflection of the species' obscurity rather than any presumption of security: the entire genus Wallaceochromis inhabits a narrow coastal-forest corridor in Upper Guinea, Sierra Leone and western Liberia — one of the most deforested regions of tropical Africa. The Republic of Guinea has lost the majority of its original rainforest cover to subsistence agriculture, logging and charcoal production, and the forest-stream systems that Wallaceochromis signatus depends on have contracted severely over recent decades.
Within the Wallaceochromis group, Wallaceochromis humilis — the most widespread of the three species — has been assessed as Least Concern (IUCN 2020), but that assessment does note ongoing habitat degradation across its range. Wallaceochromis signatus, with a distribution apparently limited to the Bandi River system, is likely the most geographically restricted of the three; a formal IUCN assessment would be warranted. Collection for the aquarium trade exists but at low volumes; the species is described as rare in availability. Considered as a whole, the narrow endemism and ongoing habitat loss in Guinea's forest zone make Wallaceochromis signatus a species of implicit conservation concern, even in the absence of a formal listing.
