Ashanti is a band of short, fast rivers in the forested southwestern corner of Ghana and a sliver of southeastern Côte d'Ivoire — the Pra, Ankobra, Tano and Bia, plus the meteor-crater Lake Bosumtwi — draining off a low plateau through what was once unbroken rainforest to coastal lagoons and mangrove swamps on the Gulf of Guinea. Its fish fauna is mostly Nilo-Sudanian in character, but the ecoregion holds a handful of fishes found nowhere else: a cichlid restricted to Bosumtwi's crater, another known only from hill creeks of the upper Pra. Those same rivers now run brown and metal-laden. Galamsey — illegal small-scale gold mining — has turned the Pra and Ankobra into some of the most polluted water in West Africa, and the endemics are vanishing with the forest.

Geography & hydrology

The Ashanti ecoregion (Freshwater Ecoregions of the World no. 515) covers Ghana's previously forested southwestern corner and a small piece of Côte d'Ivoire's southeast. From west to east its main rivers are the Bia, the Tano, the Ankobra and the Pra — the last of which is called the Ofin along part of its upper course, and is fed in its eastern headwaters by the Birim. These are short, steep-falling rivers by African standards: the Ankobra runs roughly 118 mi from its rise northeast of Wiawso south to the Gulf of Guinea, and most of the system descends gradually from historically forested lowlands into coastal lagoons and swamps rather than crossing any great interior basin (FEOW 515; Britannica).

The coast is where the freshwater meets a string of brackish lagoons. The lower Tano spreads across about 75 km2 of forested swamp before emptying into the Aby lagoon complex on the Ivorian side, and the Bia feeds the same system; mangroves line the river mouths, thickest in the southwestern half of the ecoregion (Hughes & Hughes 1992; Sayer et al. 1992). Set apart from all of this, in the ecoregion's northeastern corner, is Lake Bosumtwi — a closed, roughly 38.5 km2 crater lake gouged out by a meteorite impact about a million years ago. It has no surface outlet, so its chemistry and its fishes have followed their own track for a very long time (FEOW 515; John 1986; Turner et al. 1996).

Climate and vegetation grade from north to south with the rainfall. The natural cover runs from semi-deciduous forest in the north through moist evergreen to wet evergreen rainforest near the coast, a forest belt that today survives only in patches after a century of clearance for cocoa, oil palm and timber. During the dry climatic phases of the Pleistocene, this wet southwestern corner — together with the neighboring Eburneo ecoregion to the west — probably stayed forested while the surrounding country dried out, acting as an aquatic refuge that the ecoregion's restricted-range fishes trace back to (FEOW 515; Hugueny & Lévêque 1994). The Pra is the largest of the basins and one of Ghana's primary freshwater resources; the Birim tributary alone runs about 112 mi and drains an area whose population now numbers in the millions, which is part of why the river is under the pressure it is (Atewa/Birim study, biorxiv 2019).

Water & habitat

These are warm tropical coastal rivers, soft and near-neutral where they have not been disturbed, draining old crystalline and sedimentary lowlands under heavy forest. The habitats that matter most for the ecoregion's specialized fishes are the small hill creeks of the headwaters: shaded, fast-flowing rainforest streams only a few meters wide and at most about half a meter deep, with sandy or fine-gravel bottoms and plenty of loose rock and stone. The forest canopy is what keeps them livable — it holds the water cool and clear and shades the crevices and undercut banks that creek-dwelling cichlids spawn in. Strip the riparian trees and the streams heat up, silt in, and the caves fill (Citizen Conservation; biorxiv 2019).

Downstream the rivers broaden and slow toward the lagoons, where freshwater mixes with salt across the Aby and other coastal complexes and mangroves take over the banks. Water chemistry across the basins is variable and, increasingly, degraded. Long-term monitoring in the Pra basin records pH generally within the range fish can tolerate, broadly between about 5 and 9, but turbidity that swings to extraordinary levels where mining is active — values into the tens of thousands of milligrams per liter at the worst sites, against single digits at protected reservoirs like Barekese. Arsenic and iron routinely exceed drinking-water limits across most of the basin (Pra basin water-quality monitoring, SCIRP).

Lake Bosumtwi is the odd habitat out. Because it is hydrologically closed — fed by rain and small inflowing creeks, losing water only to evaporation — it has concentrated dissolved salts over time and developed its own chemistry, with the deeper water seasonally stratified and oxygen-poor. Fish are confined to the oxygenated surface layer and the inflowing creeks around the rim, a hard, bounded little world that has produced its own endemic cichlid (FEOW 515; Turner et al. 1996; John 1986). Between the crater lake, the shaded forest creeks, the open river reaches and the brackish coastal lagoons, the ecoregion packs a lot of different water into a small, low-relief corner of West Africa — and that spread of habitats, more than any single river, is what its fauna is sorted across.

The cichlid fauna

The Ashanti fish fauna is mostly Nilo-Sudanian in origin — the same broad West African assemblage that ranges across the savanna rivers to the north and east — rather than the distinct Upper Guinean fauna once assumed for the area. What makes the ecoregion worth a chapter of its own is the small set of fishes whose entire world is here. Among cichlids, two endemics stand out, and the atlas roster carries both (FEOW 515; Hugueny & Lévêque 1994).

Hemichromis frempongi is a jewel cichlid known only from Lake Bosumtwi and its inflowing creeks — a robust, deep-bodied relative of the widespread banded jewelfish that diverged inside the isolated crater. Its status as a full species has been debated, but its restriction to Bosumtwi is not in doubt; it is the lake's signature cichlid. The crater also holds tilapias that occur nowhere outside the Ashanti rivers and this lake: Tilapia busumana, named for Bosumtwi itself, and Coptodon discolor, recorded from the Bia, Tano and Pra and from Bosumtwi — both small, substrate-spawning tilapiines tied to this corner of Ghana and the Ivorian border zone (FishBase; FEOW 515). A third roster tilapia, Tilapia pra, carries the name of the river it belongs to and lives in medium-sized West African rivers including the Pra; Tilapia multifasciata rounds out the smaller tilapiine guild.

The ecoregion's standout cichlid is Limbochromis robertsi, the sole member of its genus and one of very few vertebrates endemic to Ghana. It is a chromidotilapiine — molecular work points to a relative in the distant upper Congo — restricted to middle-elevation hill creeks around Kibi (also spelled Kyebi) in the eastern uplands that drain through the Birim into the Pra, with a second tiny population once known from the Ankasa area in the far west and not seen there for about two decades. Robert's cichlid does something no other fish is documented to do: a bonded pair spawns in a cave or crevice in classic substrate-brooding fashion, then, about two days after laying, one parent may take the hatched larvae into its mouth and switch to mouthbrooding — a combination of cave-breeding and mouthbrooding within a single brood cycle (Citizen Conservation; biorxiv 2019; Lamboj 2004). Alongside these specialists the roster lists more widespread West African cichlids that turn up through the lower and middle reaches and the lagoon fringes — Pelmatolapia mariae, the spotted tilapia of slow, vegetated water across the region, and Thysochromis ansorgii, a chromidotilapiine of coastal swamps and sluggish creeks from Ghana eastward. The fauna, in short, is a West African coastal-river community with a couple of irreplaceable endemics embedded in it — and it is exactly those endemics that the ecoregion is now at risk of losing.

Conservation

The Ashanti rivers are being destroyed by gold. Galamsey — the Ghanaian term for illegal, unlicensed small-scale mining, glossed as 'gather them and sell' — has spread along and into the Pra, the Ankobra, the Ofin and their tributaries, with miners working the riverbeds and floodplains directly. The result is among the most polluted surface water in West Africa: turbidity at active sites runs to tens of thousands of milligrams per liter where unmined reaches sit in single digits, and mercury (used to amalgamate gold), arsenic and iron load the water and sediment. The Pra and Ankobra estuaries have been studied specifically for mercury and lead contamination traced to galamsey, with measurable burdens turning up in the tissue of food fish (Pra basin water-quality monitoring, SCIRP; Ankobra estuary mercury study). The damage is not subtle and not localized — it runs the length of these short rivers.

Limbochromis robertsi is the clearest casualty. Field observers tracking its creeks around Kibi over nearly three decades documented the total population falling roughly 90% from the early 1990s to 2018, driven by deforestation and forest fragmentation along the very creek and river banks the fish depends on, with most of the forest loss occurring along watercourses because that is where the mining and farming concentrate (biorxiv 2019). The decline has only accelerated: by 2021 the population was estimated to have collapsed by about 95% from its early-1990s level, leaving on the order of a thousand individuals across three tiny, isolated streams, and a 2025 field visit found one of the historic creeks effectively obliterated by mining, deforestation and sedimentation. The species is treated as endangered, and a captive conservation-breeding program (Citizen Conservation, with partners including the University of Vienna) is now run as an insurance population because rescue in the wild has become so difficult (Citizen Conservation; biorxiv 2019; Rufford Foundation).

The headwaters add a second front. Much of the Pra and Birim system rises in or near the Atewa Forest Reserve, an upland evergreen forest designated a globally significant biodiversity area and one of only two such reserves in Ghana — and a long-running government plan to mine it for bauxite threatens both the forest and the rivers that flow out of it, including water sources for millions of people downstream. Conservation groups have warned that bauxite mining there would be effectively irreversible for the forest and its dependent species (WWF; biorxiv 2019). The broader picture is the global freshwater-fish crisis in miniature: an IUCN assessment found roughly a quarter of freshwater fishes threatened worldwide, and Ashanti — small, forest-cleared, mined and silted — shows what that looks like at the scale of a single endemic cichlid in a single Ghanaian creek (Citizen Conservation).
