The Río Coatzacoalcos drains the narrowest neck of Mexico — the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, where the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific come closer together than anywhere else in the country. From the rugged Sierra Madre de Oaxaca it runs north across the Veracruz coastal plain to the Gulf, draining a basin that is small by Amazonian standards but startlingly rich in its own right. This is Atlantic-slope Mesoamerica, a world away from the South American flood pulse: clear, fast mountain rivers tumbling over current-smoothed rock, and warm lowland channels and lagoons below. Roughly a tenth of its native fishes are found nowhere else, and that endemism is carried above all by cichlids — including a current-specialist, the Sarabia cichlid, that has been shaped by the basin's rapids into something found only here.
Geography & hydrology
The Coatzacoalcos basin sits at the northern end of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, spanning northeastern Oaxaca and eastern Veracruz and draining north into the Gulf of Mexico. The Río Coatzacoalcos is the principal river; its major tributaries are the Jaltepec and the Uspanapa. Elevation across the basin runs from sea level up to around 2,525 ft at the rugged southern rim in the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca, so a relatively compact watershed packs in a steep gradient from cloud-forested highlands to a broad coastal plain.
That topography gives the basin two distinct hydrological zones. In the highlands and the lower flanks of the mountains, the rivers are mountain creeks and fast-flowing streams running over gravel, cobble and boulders. On the coastal plain they become big, slower lowland rivers with meanders, side lagoons and, toward the river mouth, brackish coastal lagoons and an extensive belt of Gulf-Caribbean mangroves. Between them, in the lower reaches of the mountain ranges, lie the swift, rocky, periphyton-coated runs that the basin's most specialized cichlids depend on.
The climate is wet tropical. Annual rainfall in the headwater ranges is heavy — commonly well over 39.5 in and reaching as much as 98.5 in in places — so the rivers are flashy: after heavy rain, flow rises sharply, visibility drops and water temperature falls. This is a rainfall-driven, seasonal river system rather than a snowmelt or great-flood-pulse one, but the wet-season spates are a real ecological force, scouring the channels and triggering breeding in the current-dwelling fishes.
Water & habitat
Where the Coatzacoalcos really diverges from the Amazon waters is its chemistry. These are hard, alkaline, well-oxygenated rivers. In the rheophilic ('current-loving') habitats studied for the basin's specialist cichlids, the water is typically clear, with high dissolved oxygen, a pH leaning to the alkaline side at around 7.0 to 8.5, and moderate hardness — closer to a limestone-country stream than to the soft, acidic blackwater of South America. Temperatures sit broadly in the range of about 68–86 °F across the seasons.
The habitats span a clear gradient. The signature habitat is the fast run: shallow stretches, usually under about 7 ft deep, with little aquatic vegetation but rocks, gravel, sand and boulders coated in periphyton — the slick film of algae, cyanobacteria, microbes and detritus that grows on current-smoothed stone. These reaches are clean and clear, kept so by the flow. Lower down, the coastal-plain rivers slow and warm, gathering meanders, backwaters and vegetated margins, and finally grade into brackish lagoons and mangrove at the Gulf.
Freshwater habitat diversity here is high precisely because the basin compresses mountain creek, rapids, lowland river, lagoon and estuary into a short distance. Each of those settings supports a different slice of the fish community, and the cichlids partition them — generalists in the warmer lowland water, and a handful of true rheophiles built specifically for life in the rapids.
The cichlid fauna
The Coatzacoalcos is one of Mexico's richest cichlid basins, sitting within what ichthyologists call the Usumacinta province, the most cichlid-rich region in the country. Its standout is Paraneetroplus bulleri, the Sarabia cichlid, a current specialist endemic to the Coatzacoalcos drainage. Paraneetroplus are called corrienteras — 'current-dwellers' — and P. bulleri is built for the rapids: a streamlined body, a long, strong caudal peduncle, short fins and a small, strongly sub-terminal mouth set with chisel-like teeth that it uses to rasp periphyton off current-smoothed rock. It feeds, breeds and raises fry in fast water, the pair spawning rows of adhesive eggs directly onto cleaned gravel just outside the strongest flow and then leading free-swimming fry into the current. It is a textbook example of cichlid evolutionary plasticity — a lineage reshaped by a single demanding habitat.
Around that specialist sits a broader Mesoamerican cichlid community. The genus Vieja is represented by the large, deep-bodied Vieja fenestrata and the Oaxaca cichlid Vieja zonata; Maskaheros regani is another big heroine cichlid of the basin. The Thorichthys 'firemouth' group is unusually well developed here, with the San Domingo cichlid Thorichthys callolepis, the yellow cichlid T. helleri and the Pancho Villa cichlid T. panchovillai — small to mid-sized, sand-sifting, gill-flaring cichlids of slower reaches and pools. Rounding out the roster are the false firemouth Cribroheros robertsoni, Salvin's cichlid Trichromis salvini (a handsomely spotted predator), and Rocio octofasciata — the Jack Dempsey, one of the hobby's most familiar fish, native here on the Atlantic slope of Middle America.
The assemblage divides the basin neatly: Paraneetroplus owns the rapids; Thorichthys, Trichromis, Cribroheros, Rocio and the big Vieja and Maskaheros work the slower, warmer lowland rivers, pools and margins. It is a Central American story — substrate-spawning and biparental brood care rather than the mouthbrooding and leaf-litter dwarf cichlids of the western Amazon — but it produces the same outcome: a single river basin partitioned finely among its cichlids.
Conservation
The Coatzacoalcos is a basin of high endemism — roughly 10% of its native fishes are found nowhere else, with cichlids and livebearers making up most of that endemic core. Several of its cichlids are flagged as Data Deficient (the Oaxaca cichlid Vieja zonata, Maskaheros regani, the San Domingo cichlid Thorichthys callolepis), and the San Domingo cichlid is held in the CARES conservation-priority program for hobbyists, a sign that aquarists consider its wild future precarious enough to maintain captive insurance populations. That status is a fair summary of the basin: rich, distinctive, and under-monitored.
The pressures here are industrial in a way the remote Amazon headwaters are not. The lower Coatzacoalcos is one of Mexico's major petrochemical corridors — the river mouth and its lagoons have long carried refineries, chemical plants and shipping — and the basin sits at the centre of Mexico's interoceanic development plans across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Pollution, channel modification, and the warming and silting of lowland reaches all bear on the fishes that need clean, clear, oxygen-rich water. For the rheophilic specialists in particular, the threat is specific: Paraneetroplus and its kind require swift, well-oxygenated, low-pollution rapids, and they cannot simply relocate when those reaches are dammed, dredged, dewatered or fouled.
Upstream, deforestation in the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca and the Chimalapas forests erodes soil into the headwaters, blurring the clear water that the current-dwellers and sight-feeders depend on, while introduced species add competitive and predatory pressure. Because so much of what is special here is endemic — and because some of it is still poorly surveyed — the conservation case for the Coatzacoalcos is partly a case for finishing the inventory before the basin's industrial trajectory outpaces the science. The middle reaches of the main river remain, by the freshwater-ecoregion assessors' own admission, among the least explored parts of the system.
