Taxonomy & naming
Barbus haasi was described by the German herpetologist and ichthyologist Robert Mertens in 1925, making it one of the few European barbels named in the twentieth century. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) confirms the valid combination as Barbus haasi Mertens, 1925, in the family Cyprinidae. The GBIF taxonomy also records the synonym Messinobarbus haasi (Mertens, 1925), reflecting an older generic arrangement for some western Mediterranean barbels, but the Catalog of Fishes placement in Barbus is followed here.
The species belongs to the complex of medium-bodied barbels indigenous to the Mediterranean slope of the Iberian Peninsula — a group that also includes Barbus graellsii and Barbus meridionalis in the same region. European freshwater ichthyology in this complex has seen considerable revision, and the authority year is occasionally cited as 1924 in some European databases, but 1925 is the date given in the Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Barbus haasi is a medium-sized barbel reaching approximately 12 in in total length, with the elongated, fusiform body plan characteristic of rheophilic European barbels built for life in fast current. The body is moderately compressed laterally, with a ventrally flattened undersurface reflecting its benthic habits on stony substrates. Four barbels — two rostral and two maxillary — help the fish probe the bottom for prey.
The most recognisable feature is the conspicuous red or orange-red colouration of the caudal fin and the paired pelvic and pectoral fins, which gives the fish both its Catalan name (barb cua-roig, "red-tailed barb") and its English name Iberian Redfin Barbel. The dorsal surface is brownish-olive, grading to a paler, silvery or yellowish flank and a lighter underside. The fin colouration is generally more intense in males and in fish in breeding condition.
Habitat
The Catalonian barbel is a strict Mediterranean endemic, confined to a small cluster of river systems draining the eastern slope of the Iberian Peninsula into the Mediterranean Sea — principally the Llobregat and Riudecanyes drainages and portions of the larger Ebro basin in Catalonia, northeastern Spain. Its native range spans roughly 36–44°N latitude, placing it in a temperate, seasonally variable climate.
Within those drainages it favours the upper, cooler stretches of rivers and streams: sections with reliable current, high dissolved oxygen, and stony or boulder substrates. These are typically well-oxygenated, clear, and moderately hard, reflecting the limestone geology of the region. FishBase describes the habitat as upper stream reaches with current and stone bottom — exactly the niche shared by rheophilic barbels across the western Mediterranean rim. The species is a benthic, bottom-associated fish that shelters among rocks and gravel.
Feeding
Barbus haasi is a benthic invertebrate feeder. FishBase records a trophic level of 3.4, consistent with a diet centred on aquatic macroinvertebrates. Chironomidae (midge larvae) and Ephemeroptera (mayfly larvae) are among the principal prey items documented, alongside other aquatic insects and small invertebrates encountered while foraging over the stony substrate.
This foraging strategy is shared across most rheophilic Barbus of the western Mediterranean. The four barbels are used to probe between stones and in gravel interstices for concealed invertebrates. Algae, organic detritus, and plant material may supplement the diet opportunistically, as is typical for omnivorous-tending cyprinids, but the diet is predominantly animal in character.
Mating
Like all barbs, Barbus haasi is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built, no territory is defended beyond transient courtship pursuit, and neither parent remains with the eggs after spawning. A ripe male actively pursues a gravid female through the current and over the substrate, pressing alongside her as eggs and milt are released together into the water.
Spawning in Mediterranean barbels is typically seasonal, timed to spring or early summer warming when river flows are receding after winter and spring rainfall. In temperate Iberian streams this corresponds to a rise in water temperature and increasing day length. Colour in males — particularly the red-flush of the fins — intensifies during the breeding season.
Breeding
Barbus haasi scatters adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over gravel and stones in flowing water, where they settle between substrate particles and develop in the current. The eggs receive no parental attention; adults give no care to eggs or larvae and will consume eggs given the opportunity. Fry are free-living from hatching, dependent on the benthos and plankton of the stream.
Barbus haasi is not commonly bred in aquaria and is rarely kept in captivity outside its native region. The species is not an established aquarium trade item, and there is little published hobbyist experience with its breeding. Given its temperate, rheophilic biology, reproduction would require cool, well-oxygenated, flowing water conditions to replicate the spring spawning trigger.
In the aquarium
The Catalonian barbel is not an aquarium fish in any conventional sense. It is a protected endemic of northeastern Spain and is not available through the ornamental trade. Its size (up to 12 in), strong preference for cool, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water, and benthic lifestyle make it poorly suited to standard aquarium conditions.
For the specialist keeper of European native fishes, a very large, heavily filtered, unheated stream tank with strong flow, coarse gravel, and stone arrangements could approximate its natural conditions. Water should be cool (reflecting temperate northeastern Spain), clear, hard, and alkaline. This is a fish of scientific and conservation interest rather than ornamental appeal, and keeping it outside its native range is subject to wildlife protection regulations.
Conservation
Barbus haasi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with a status updated in September 2023 (revised from a prior Vulnerable assessment in 2022). Despite the current LC status, its restricted endemic range in northeastern Spain makes it inherently vulnerable to localised threats.
The principal threats documented in the literature include the introduction of invasive species — particularly pumpkinseed sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus) and Wels catfish (Silurus glanis) — which prey on and compete with native barbels in Mediterranean Iberian drainages. River regulation (dams and channelisation), water extraction for agriculture and urban supply, and pollution in the Llobregat and associated river systems compound the habitat pressure. The species qualifies as a Mediterranean freshwater endemic of conservation concern, and monitoring of its range and abundance within the Catalan and Ebro drainages is ongoing.
