Every name, resolved

A barb is known by a current scientific binomial under the Catalog of Fishes and, often, by an English common name — “tiger barb”, “rosy barb”, “denison barb”, “tinfoil barb”. Because so many were shuffled out of the old genus Puntius after 2012, the same fish often travels under two binomials. This index cross-references both layers — the 882 scientific names and 504 common names — and resolves each one to its species page.

Scientific name — the valid binomial under the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names. Common name — English vernacular and trade names recorded for the species. Each entry is tagged with its group. Many African and Eurasian barbs have no English name at all and appear by their binomial only.
