Barbus miliaris is a small, speckled barb endemic to the endorheic Namak Lake basin and adjacent Kavir basin of central Iran — a drainage system that empties not into the sea but into the salt lake and playa of the Iranian interior. Described by the Italian naturalist Filippo de Filippi in 1863 from specimens collected near Tehran, it is one of a cluster of Iranian Barbus whose validity has been debated against closely related species such as B. cyri. Recent re-description work published in the 2010s and 2020s supports it as a valid, diagnosable species on the basis of lateral-line scale counts, predorsal scale counts and the proportions of its upper lip. It is virtually unknown in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Barbus miliaris was described by Filippo de Filippi in 1863, published in the Archivio per la Zoologia, l'Anatomia e la Fisiologia (volume 2, page 393). The type locality is Tehran, Iran, within the Namak Lake basin. Syntypes are held at the Museo Zoologico dell'Università di Torino (MZUT 676, three specimens). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Barbus miliaris De Filippi, 1863.

The species sits within the large, paraphyletic genus Barbus as currently applied to European and western-Palearctic barbines. Its validity has historically been contested against B. mursa (sometimes treated as a synonym) and against the morphologically close B. cyri, which shares the Namak and Kavir basins of Iran. A re-description study confirmed that B. miliaris is diagnosable from B. cyri by a combination of meristic and morphometric characters: a higher predorsal scale count (37–47, mode 42 vs. fewer in B. cyri), a straight posterior anal-fin margin, and a narrower upper lip (4–6 % head length, versus 7–9 % HL in B. cyri).

Morphology

Barbus miliaris is a moderately sized barbine with 11 dorsal soft rays and 9 anal soft rays. The lateral line bears 69–87 scales, with a mode of 77, placing it among the more scale-rich of the Iranian Barbus. A distinctive meristic feature is the extent of denticulation on the last unbranched dorsal-fin ray: 80–95 % of the posterior margin is covered in denticles, providing a useful character alongside the scale and lip measurements.

The species' epithet refers to its most visible field mark: fine black speckling concentrated on the belly and on the dorsal and anal fins, giving the appearance of a thousand tiny dots (Latin miliaris, 'of a thousand'). Beyond this pattern, detailed description of the live colouration and maximum reported body size is sparse in the published literature; the species is rarely documented in aquarium or photographic records.

Habitat

Barbus miliaris is confined to the endorheic Namak Lake basin and the adjacent Kavir basin in central Iran. These are internally draining systems: rivers and seasonal watercourses flow toward the great salt lake (Daryacheh-ye Namak) and the Dasht-e Kavir salt desert rather than reaching the sea. Water bodies in these basins are typically fresh to brackish near their headwaters and become increasingly saline toward the terminal playas; the fish inhabit the fresher, flowing reaches.

Iran's interior plateau rivers are subject to wide seasonal variation in flow and temperature, with cold winters and hot summers. The species is presumed to favour cooler, well-oxygenated upland sections; however, detailed temperature, pH and hardness records for its specific habitats are not available in the published literature. Given the geology of the Iranian plateau, waters are likely moderately hard and neutral to alkaline.

Feeding

No species-specific feeding data are available for Barbus miliaris in the published literature. Like other mid-sized Palearctic Barbus, it is assumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking invertebrates, algae, plant matter and organic detritus from the substrate and water column. The benthopelagic habits typical of the genus suggest foraging along stream beds, rooting through gravel and silt for benthic invertebrates.

In the aquarium the species is almost entirely undocumented, and no detailed dietary observations from captivity are on record.

Mating

Barbus miliaris has not been described in spawning accounts from the wild or aquarium, but as a member of the family Cyprinidae and genus Barbus it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Courtship in the genus typically involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or over gravel substrate, with eggs and milt released together in brief pairings.

No pair bond is formed, and no territory is defended beyond the moment of spawning. Given the climatic range of the Namak basin, spawning in wild populations is likely seasonal, correlated with spring warming and peak river flows following snowmelt — a pattern common to Palearctic Barbus across the western-Palearctic region.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Barbus miliaris appear in the aquarium literature. The species is essentially absent from the hobby. By analogy with other Palearctic Barbus, it would be expected to scatter adhesive eggs over gravel or among aquatic vegetation, with no subsequent parental care — adults would consume eggs given the opportunity.

In an aquarium setting, a cool-water setup mimicking the seasonal temperature swings of the Iranian interior plateau would likely be necessary to induce conditioning and spawning. A period of lower temperatures in winter followed by a spring rise, combined with increased current and live or frozen invertebrate foods, is the standard approach used for European barbel species.

In the aquarium

Barbus miliaris is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby outside of specialist collections with an interest in Iranian cyprinids. It is not commercially available through normal trade channels and has no established captive husbandry literature. The information here is therefore extrapolated from the biology of closely related Palearctic Barbus.

The species would be expected to require cool, well-oxygenated water with good current, reflecting its origin in the flowing headwaters of Iran's interior plateau drainages. A temperature range in the low-to-mid teens Celsius during winter and rising to the low twenties in summer would be appropriate, alongside a neutral to slightly alkaline pH and moderate hardness. A roomy tank with a gravel or cobble substrate, good filtration, and minimal decoration would suit its presumed open-water and substrate-foraging habits.

Conservation

Barbus miliaris has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated (NE). This alone is cause for concern: the species is an endemic of the Namak Lake and Kavir basins, endorheic systems in one of the world's more arid regions, meaning its entire range lies within a hydrologically vulnerable, internally draining watershed.

Iranian freshwater fishes face mounting pressure from water abstraction for agriculture and urban use, dam construction, groundwater depletion, and the salinisation of terminal water bodies. Species restricted to single endorheic basins are especially exposed — range contraction cannot be compensated by recolonisation from outside the drainage. The absence of an IUCN assessment means that conservation need has not been formally quantified, but the species' restricted range and the documented stresses on Iranian inland waters place it in a precarious position.
