Taxonomy & naming
Barbus prespensis was described by the Yugoslav ichthyologist Stjepan Karaman in 1924, with the Prespa Lakes as the type locality. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) confirms the valid name as Barbus prespensis Karaman, 1924, with no junior synonyms currently recorded under this entry.
The genus Barbus sensu stricto is now restricted to the European and Balkan barbels — a group of relatively large-bodied, benthic cyprinids of cool rivers and lakes — distinct from the large complex of Asian and African genera that once fell under the old, broadly applied Barbus aggregate. Within this European clade, the Prespa barb belongs to a lineage of Balkan endemics whose distributions track the ancient drainages of the western Balkans and the Aegean watershed.
Morphology
Barbus prespensis is a moderately elongate barbel, reaching up to 12 in fork length according to FishBase, making it the largest indigenous fish in the Prespa Lakes. The body is laterally compressed but more fusiform than many deeper-bodied barbs, suited to life in both open-lake environments and the moderate currents of tributary streams during spawning migrations. The mouth is inferior and subterminal, bearing the two pairs of barbels characteristic of the genus.
Colouration is typical of European barbels: a silvery to brassy-olive flank, darker across the dorsum, with pale to yellowish fins. Sexually mature females are noticeably deeper-bellied when gravid. The species has not been reported to develop strong nuptial tubercles, though males in spawning condition may show slight roughening on the head and flanks as seen in related Barbus.
Habitat
The Prespa barb is a freshwater benthopelagic species restricted to the Prespa Lakes basin — Megali Prespa (the large lake) and Mikri Prespa (the small lake), which together form a high-altitude endorheic system at roughly 2789 ft elevation on the Albanian-Greek-North Macedonian border. The lakes drain subsurface into Lake Ohrid rather than through a surface channel, giving the basin a degree of hydrological isolation that has promoted endemism.
For most of the year the species inhabits the low-lying, sheltered littoral and pelagic zones of the lakes themselves. In late April through mid-July it migrates into the inflowing tributary streams and reed margins to spawn, with the timing differing between the two lakes — spawning occurs earlier in the shallower, warmer Mikri Prespa and later in the larger Megali Prespa. The habitat description from the IUCN Mediterranean Fish specialist data documents the species as occurring in both the permanent lakes and intermittent river sections feeding them, in water with little current and some submerged or emergent vegetation.
Feeding
Like other members of the European Barbus group, B. prespensis is an opportunistic omnivore. It feeds on benthic invertebrates — chironomid larvae, molluscs, aquatic worms and small crustaceans — as well as algae, plant material, and organic detritus gleaned from the lake floor and from submerged substrates along the shoreline. The inferior mouth is well adapted for rooting through soft sediments and picking invertebrates from the benthos.
Detailed dietary studies specific to the Prespa population are sparse in the available literature, but the feeding ecology is broadly consistent with that of other large European barbels, which shift toward a more carnivorous diet as they grow and take larger prey items including small fish when available.
Mating
Barbus prespensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Adults migrate from the open lakes to inflowing tributary streams and shallow, vegetated margins between late April and mid-July, with the precise timing varying by lake and year. In Mikri Prespa, spawning runs begin and end earlier; in the larger Megali Prespa, peak activity is later in the season.
During courtship, males drive gravid females through submerged vegetation, reed beds, or over gravel substrates, releasing eggs and milt together in a characteristic barb-style broadcast spawning. No pair bond is formed, no territory is held beyond the moment of spawning, and there is no nest construction of any kind. The eggs are adhesive and settle among plants and gravel after release.
Breeding
Spawning runs in the Prespa barb last from late April through mid-July, overlapping with rising water temperatures in the tributary streams. FishBase records the maturity range beginning around 4.5 in fork length, meaning fish reach sexual maturity well before their full adult size. Population monitoring in Mikri Prespa in the 1984–1994 period found the population broadly stable over that decade, providing one of the few historical baselines for the species.
Once eggs are scattered over the spawning substrate, the adults give no further care. Eggs and fry develop unattended, at risk from invertebrate predation and, if adults remain in the vicinity, from the adults themselves. Recruitment depends entirely on the quality and accessibility of spawning tributaries — a dependence that makes the species vulnerable to anything that reduces tributary flow or quality, including drought, water abstraction, and pollution entering the system upstream.
In the aquarium
Barbus prespensis is not an established aquarium fish and is not available in the ornamental trade. As a Natura 2000 protected species and a Near Threatened endemic of a transboundary protected area, its collection from the wild for the hobby would be both legally restricted and ecologically inadvisable. The species is also a relatively large barbel — up to 12 in — that occupies a temperate, seasonally cold lake system, requirements that do not translate readily to domestic aquaria.
Aquarists interested in European barbels and their ecology are better served by the closely related Barbus barbus or other temperate European cyprinids that are established in captive breeding programmes. For the Prespa barb, the appropriate context is conservation rather than the hobby.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Barbus prespensis as Near Threatened (NT) on 24 October 2023, reflecting the inherent vulnerability of a species with a very restricted range confined to a single transboundary lake system. The Prespa Lakes basin is a Natura 2000 protected area and an internationally recognised Important Bird and Biodiversity Area, giving the species some formal habitat protection across the three countries in whose waters it occurs.
Despite this protection, the species faces a constellation of pressures. Water extraction for agriculture reduces both lake levels and the flow of spawning tributaries. Pollution from agricultural runoff and inadequate wastewater treatment degrades water quality in the shallow Mikri Prespa in particular. Drought, exacerbated by the increasing aridity trend across the western Balkans under climate change, further stresses tributary flow during the critical spawning window. Because the entire global population is confined to two lakes and their immediate tributaries with no possibility of recolonisation from outside the basin, any significant deterioration of conditions in the Prespa system translates directly into population-level risk for the species.
