Luciobarbus barbulus is a medium-to-large barbel native to the Tigris–Euphrates river system and associated drainages of Iran, Iraq, Syria, and possibly southern Turkey — a warm-water, bottom-associated cyprinid of the western Palearctic whose range spans some of the oldest settled river basins on earth. Described by the Austrian ichthyologist Johann Jakob Heckel in 1847 from specimens collected near Shiraz in Fars province and from the Kueik River near Aleppo, it belongs to the genus Luciobarbus, the large-river barbels of the Mediterranean rim and Middle East that were for many decades lumped under the broadly applied Old World catch-all Barbus. It reaches at least 23.5 in in total length and is virtually absent from the aquarium hobby, known mainly from systematic ichthyology and the rivers of its native range.
