Naziritor chelynoides was originally described by the Scottish physician and naturalist John McClelland in 1839 as Barbus chelynoides, from specimens collected in the Himalayan foothills of northern India. Over subsequent decades the species passed through several generic placements — most notably Tor chelynoides — before morphological and molecular analyses confirmed it as sufficiently distinct to warrant its own genus, Naziritor. GBIF records the authority as McClelland, 1839, and the Catalog of Fishes places it in the family Cyprinidae, subfamily Torinae.
The genus Naziritor is monotypic or near-monotypic and belongs to the mahseer assemblage, a group of large-bodied Asian cyprinids historically grouped under Tor but now resolved into several genera by molecular phylogenetics. A 2023 morphological, osteological, and molecular study (documented on ResearchGate) formally characterised the dark mahseer and confirmed the validity of the species and its generic placement. The old combination Tor chelynoides occasionally appears in regional fisheries literature and museum catalogue entries, and aquarium and angling references may still use it.

The dark mahseer inhabits fast-flowing, cold, well-oxygenated mountain streams and hill rivers across the Central and Western Himalayan foothills of India and Nepal. It has been recorded in the Ganges River system, including the Kedar Valley and tributaries such as the Kalsa stream in Uttarakhand (documented in a 2025 population-structure study in a Springer journal). Its range extends east to Assam. FishBase describes the species as confined to Asia, in India and Nepal.
Like other torines, the dark mahseer is a rheophilic species tied to swift, clear, rocky or gravelly reaches — the kind of habitat characteristic of Himalayan foothill rivers at mid-elevations. Water temperatures in these streams are cool year-round, dropping markedly in winter. The species is unlikely to tolerate the still, warm, turbid conditions of lowland impoundments.
Feeding
Naziritor chelynoides is assumed to feed in the manner typical of torine mahseers: an omnivore taking algae and periphyton scraped from rocks with its fleshy inferior mouth, supplemented by aquatic invertebrates (insect larvae, crustaceans), fallen terrestrial invertebrates, and organic detritus. Large individuals likely take a greater proportion of invertebrate and even occasional fish prey, as is seen in other large Himalayan barbs.
