Pseudobarbus agulhas, the Agulhas redfin, is a small cyprinid described formally in 2025 from the Heuningnes River system at the southernmost fringe of Africa — a fish that had been known to ecologists and anglers for years but lacked a scientific name and therefore stood outside the reach of formal conservation law. Olive-brown above, silvery-white below, and flushed at the fin bases with bright scarlet, it is the only redfin in its region and one of the rarest freshwater fishes in South Africa. Confined to two river systems in the Western Cape and threatened by water extraction, invasive predators, and a changing climate, its description has been the key that unlocks formal protection.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudobarbus agulhas was formally described in 2025 by Zarei, Martin, Skelton, and Chakona in the journal Zoosystematics and Evolution (101(3): 1271–1296). The description was part of a systematic review of the southern African redfin barb complex, separating P. agulhas from its closest relatives — P. burchelli and P. vulneratus — on the basis of circumpeduncular scale count, head and snout proportions, pharyngeal tooth structure, and genetic data. Both morphological and molecular evidence support its distinctiveness.

The genus Pseudobarbus is a southern African radiation of small redfin barbs formerly grouped within the broadly defined genus Barbus and later Puntius. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid names, and the combination Pseudobarbus agulhas Zarei, Martin & Chakona, 2025 is the valid current name. The species was identified by a team from the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity and collaborators.

Two genetically and geographically distinct sub-lineages have been identified within the species corresponding broadly to the Heuningnes and upper Klein River drainages, though they are treated as a single species under current taxonomy.

Morphology

The Agulhas redfin is a small, slender barb with the general body plan typical of the genus: a moderately compressed, fusiform profile with a terminal mouth bearing two pairs of barbels. The dorsal surface is olive-brown, fading to a silvery-white underside, and the most striking feature is the bright scarlet flush at the bases of all the fins — a coloration shared with other Pseudobarbus species and the likely origin of the "redfin" group name.

It is distinguished from its nearest relatives in the P. burchelli complex by specific differences in circumpeduncular scale count, the relative proportions of the head and snout, and the configuration of the pharyngeal teeth. Nuwejaars Wetlands SMA field notes describe a distinctive double-barbel arrangement and a characteristic head shape that experienced observers use in the field to separate it from sympatric species.

Size data are not yet published in detail for the species; as a member of a genus of small stream barbs, adults are likely in the range of a few centimetres in standard length. Detailed meristic data are recorded in the 2025 description (Zarei et al.).

Habitat

Pseudobarbus agulhas is restricted to two river systems in the Western Cape of South Africa: the Heuningnes River system, which drains to the coast near Cape Agulhas (the southernmost point of Africa), and the Karingmelks River in the upper Klein River system. The Heuningnes system is described as the evolutionary stronghold of the species.

Within these rivers the Agulhas redfin inhabits pools and streams characterised by higher turbidity and conductivity compared with the clear, soft upland streams preferred by some of its relatives, and occupies reaches with gentler gradients. The surrounding landscape is the Agulhas Plain, a low-lying, wind-swept coastal fynbos plateau with strong seasonal rainfall patterns. Water chemistry data specific to the species are sparse in published sources; the broader regional hydrology suggests moderately mineralised water rather than the soft, peat-tinted streams typical of some Western Cape redfins further to the north and west.

Feeding

The Agulhas redfin is reported to be omnivorous, feeding on algae and small invertebrates. This diet is consistent with the feeding ecology documented for other Pseudobarbus species and for small stream barbs generally across Africa, which tend to be opportunistic generalists taking whatever the benthos and water column offer — diatoms and filamentous algae scraped from rocks, chironomid and mayfly larvae, and organic detritus.

No detailed gut-content studies have been published for P. agulhas specifically; the information available from secondary sources and from the ecology of congeners suggests a broad omnivore with a mixed plant-and-invertebrate diet that shifts seasonally with food availability in a system subject to strongly seasonal rainfall.

Mating

Like all barbs, Pseudobarbus agulhas is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no pair bond beyond the act of spawning, and no parental care of any kind. Spawning is seasonal: field observations reported by the Mail & Guardian indicate that the species spawns in summer, in riffles above pools — fast, shallow, well-oxygenated water over gravel substrate.

Courtship follows the typical barb pattern: a ripe male pursues a gravid female through or over the spawning habitat, pressing alongside her as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. Colour and activity intensify in reproductively active fish. Eggs are adhesive and settle into the gravel interstices or onto substrate, where they receive no further attention from either parent.

Breeding

Spawning takes place in summer riffles, consistent with the seasonal hydrology of the Agulhas Plain where winter rains build river levels and summer warmth triggers reproductive activity. Eggs are scattered over gravel in the current, where water movement supplies oxygen and gravel spaces shelter them from visual predators. Adults give no parental care and do not guard eggs or fry.

Pseudobarbus agulhas has not been established in captivity to the same degree as many northern-hemisphere barbs, and detailed aquarium-breeding protocols are not yet available in the hobby literature. Conservation breeding programs are a priority given the species' precarious wild status; it has been relocated to fish sanctuaries as part of a managed conservation program supported by the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, with reintroduction to protected historical range sites planned.

In the aquarium

Pseudobarbus agulhas is not an aquarium trade fish and is not commercially available. Its range is tiny, its populations are critically small, and it is the subject of active conservation intervention. Collection from the wild would be both ecologically damaging and legally problematic given its Endangered status.

For hobbyists interested in southern African redfins from an educational or conservation perspective, the broader context of the Pseudobarbus genus — a group of small, active stream barbs endemic to South Africa's river drainages — is of great interest. Should the species eventually become available through conservation-breeding surplus, it would require cool, well-oxygenated water reflecting its temperate coastal-plain origins, with a moderate current and a gravel or sand substrate. It should be considered a conservation asset, not a trade commodity.

Conservation

Pseudobarbus agulhas is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. Its range is limited to two small river systems — the Heuningnes and the upper Klein (Karingmelks River) — in the Western Cape of South Africa, giving it one of the most restricted distributions of any South African freshwater fish. Small isolated populations and a naturally fragmented habitat already constrain the species; additional human-driven pressures have pushed it toward the edge.

The primary threats are water extraction for agriculture and domestic use (which reduces flows and concentrates the already-small populations in shrinking habitat), invasive predatory fish — particularly spotted bass (Micropterus punctulatus) and bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) introduced from North America — climate change, and habitat fragmentation. These pressures interact: a drought year that drops water levels exposes the fish to higher predation pressure from invasive bass in the remaining deep pools.

Conservation actions include translocation of individuals to fish sanctuaries and a planned reintroduction program backed by the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund. The formal scientific description in 2025 was itself a conservation milestone: without an accepted binomial, the fish could not be named in legislation or management plans. Having a name, the Agulhas redfin can now be listed, protected, and managed as a distinct entity under South African environmental law.
