Tor barakae, the Barak mahseer, is a poorly-known member of the true mahseer genus described in 2003 from the Barak River system in Manipur, northeastern India. A benthopelagic fish of mountain streams and hill rivers with rocky substrates and fast, clear water, it belongs to the same lineage as the celebrated sport fish of the Indian subcontinent — large-scaled, deep-bodied cyprinids that are simultaneously revered by anglers and gravely threatened by overfishing and habitat loss. Subsequent sampling has confirmed the species in the Sangu River basin of Bangladesh, extending its known range and suggesting populations persist across the hill rivers of the India–Bangladesh border zone.

Taxonomy & naming

Tor barakae was described by Arunkumar and Basudha in 2003 from specimens collected in the Barak River drainage, Manipur, northeastern India. The name honours the Barak River, the principal waterway of Manipur and a major tributary of the Surma–Meghna river system that drains into Bangladesh. The species belongs to Tor, the true mahseer genus (Cyprinidae: Cyprininae), a group of large-scaled, often large-bodied South and Southeast Asian cyprinids long prized as sport fish and food fish across their range.

The genus Tor has historically been the subject of taxonomic revision, and several species were long lumped under broader names or confused with more widespread congeners. Arunkumar and Basudha's 2003 description formally distinguished the Barak drainage population as its own species. A 2023 DNA barcoding study from Bangladesh (via the NCBI/PMC literature) provided the first molecular and morphological voucher records from the Sangu River basin in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, confirming both the species' presence in Bangladesh and that the Barak–Sangu populations can be assigned to T. barakae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid name.

Morphology

Tor barakae is a moderately-sized mahseer with the hallmarks of its genus: a robust, somewhat laterally compressed body, large scales, a subterminal to terminal mouth with fleshy lips suited to grazing rocky substrates, and two pairs of rostral and maxillary barbels. The species reaches at least 5.5 in standard length in museum specimens per FishBase, though field collections from Bangladesh recorded individuals of 22–26 in total length (mean approximately 23.5 in), indicating that the FishBase SL figure may reflect juvenile vouchers from the type series while the species attains considerably larger sizes in the wild.

Detailed published morphometrics for T. barakae are limited given its status as a poorly-known species, and much of what is known comes from the original description and a small number of museum specimens. It is described as benthopelagic, spending time over rocky and gravelly substrates in flowing water.

Habitat

The Barak mahseer inhabits mountain streams and hill rivers characterised by rocky bottoms, clear fast-flowing water, and deep pools with sandy to gravelly substrate. The type locality — the Barak River system in Manipur — drains the rugged Manipur Hills at elevations where rivers run cool and highly oxygenated. The Bangladesh records come from the Sangu River basin in the Thanchi upazila of Bandarban, likewise a hilly, forested catchment in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Broader studies on mahseer ecology in comparable Tor habitats (including Tor tor in the Narmada drainage) document preferences for water temperatures of approximately 68–82 °F, pH in the range 6.5–8.5, and dissolved oxygen above 5 mg/L — consistent with the swift hill-river environment that T. barakae occupies. The species is not recorded from sluggish lowland waters.

Feeding

Like most Tor mahseers, the Barak mahseer is an omnivore with a benthos-oriented diet. The fleshy lips and subterminal mouth are adapted for grazing algae, periphyton and biofilm from rock surfaces, and for picking up invertebrates — insect larvae, crustaceans and worms — from the substrate. Larger individuals likely take a broader range of food items including small fish, fallen fruits and organic detritus, a pattern well documented in other large Tor species.

Specific diet studies for T. barakae are not available in the published literature, and the species is described as poorly known with no data on population biology or detailed ecology. Feeding habits are inferred from congener biology and from the habitat type in which the species has been recorded.

Mating

Tor barakae, as a member of the mahseer genus, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Large river mahseers are typically seasonal spawners that aggregate and migrate upstream into smaller, faster tributaries during the monsoon or pre-monsoon period to broadcast eggs over gravel and rocky substrates. Males pursue gravid females and spawning occurs in the current, with eggs and milt released together over the substrate.

No nest is constructed, no territory is held beyond the act of spawning, and there is no parental care of eggs or fry. The eggs, once scattered over the gravel, are abandoned. Specific spawning observations for T. barakae have not been published, and breeding behaviour is inferred from congener studies in comparable hill-river systems.

Breeding

Detailed captive or wild breeding data for Tor barakae are not available in the literature. The species is rare in the aquarium trade and has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions. Based on the biology of related Tor species, breeding would involve seasonal upstream migration linked to monsoon timing, with spawning over gravel riffles in clean, well-oxygenated water.

Eggs scattered over the substrate receive no parental attention and are at risk from predation by adults and other substrate feeders. Fry are thought to remain in shallow gravelly margins as they develop, gradually moving into deeper water. The species' large adult size and apparent rarity make it unlikely to become an aquarium breeding subject in the near term.

In the aquarium

Tor barakae is effectively absent from the ornamental trade and is not an aquarium subject. Its large potential size — field specimens reaching close to 23.5 in total length — along with its requirement for cool, fast, highly oxygenated water and its status as a Near Threatened species with a limited wild range, make it unsuitable for all but the most specialised public aquarium settings.

For hobbyists interested in mahseer-type barbs, smaller and more established congeners or related hill-stream cyprinids are the practical alternative. The conservation pressures on T. barakae and the restricted, poorly-documented nature of its populations further underscore why wild collection for the trade is inadvisable.

Conservation

Tor barakae is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List. The species is endemic to a restricted range across the hill-river systems of Manipur, India, and the adjacent Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. Its range is small, its populations appear naturally limited by the extent of suitable high-gradient hill-stream habitat, and the species is described as poorly known with no data on population size or trends.

The principal threats identified are overfishing and habitat destruction. Hill rivers in Manipur and the Sangu basin face pressure from unregulated fishing — including the use of nets, poisons and explosives in some areas — as well as deforestation in catchments, sedimentation, and infrastructure development affecting stream connectivity. As a large-bodied food fish, the Barak mahseer is likely targeted directly wherever it is accessible. The confirmation of the species in Bangladesh in recent years represents both a range extension and a signal that populations persist across borders, but coordinated monitoring or protection plans specific to T. barakae are not documented in the available literature.
