Taxonomy & naming
Betta breviobesa was described by Tan Heok Hui and Maurice Kottelat in 1998, the authority now recorded by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) as Tan & Kottelat, 1998. The holotype (MZB 3866) was collected from a stream approximately 54 mi east of Pontianak — specifically about 1 mi up Sungai Tajan from the village of Tajan — at approximately 0°02'S, 110°07'E in Kalimantan Barat, the Indonesian portion of western Borneo. The species is placed in the pugnax group, a clade of larger, paternal mouthbrooding bettas that ranges across Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo.
The specific epithet breviobesa is Latin in construction; the name alludes to physical characters used to distinguish it from related pugnax-group species. Because the species was described in Betta, where it remains valid, no parenthetical authority is applied. Catalog of Fishes records no synonyms, and the name has been stable since its original description.
Morphology
Betta breviobesa reaches approximately 2.5 in standard length; no substantially larger size has been recorded in the literature or by hobbyist keepers. It is a modestly built fish by the standards of the pugnax group, which as a whole tends toward the larger end of the genus. The body form is elongate and slightly compressed, typical of Betta, with the dorsal and anal fins extending along much of the posterior body.
Sexual dimorphism is apparent in experienced hands: males display a distinctly broader head than females, a pointed spike on the caudal fin (a characteristic feature across the pugnax complex), and pelvic fins that are noticeably longer than those of females. Coloration in this species is understated relative to the popular ornamental bettas — the pugnax group is generally less vividly coloured — though males can show iridescent highlights on the body and fins, particularly when displaying or in peak condition. Like all members of the genus, B. breviobesa possesses the labyrinth organ, a suprabranchial accessory respiratory structure that allows the fish to breathe atmospheric oxygen directly.
Habitat
Betta breviobesa is known exclusively from the middle Kapuas River basin in Kalimantan Barat, Indonesian Borneo. The type locality is a small blackwater stream draining into Sungai Tajan, east of Pontianak; the surrounding landscape at the time of collection was degraded forest, and the stream itself carried blackish, darkly stained water characteristic of peat-swamp drainage. The species' entire documented range falls within this drainage system, making it among the more narrowly distributed wild bettas.
Blackwater streams in this region are warm, very soft, and strongly acidic, with pH values commonly below 5 and conductivity approaching distilled water. Water temperatures in lowland Bornean swamp habitats typically range through the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, varying little seasonally in the equatorial zone. The water is typically slow-moving to still, with heavy leaf litter on the substrate, dense riparian vegetation, and low dissolved-oxygen levels that make the labyrinth organ essential for survival. This is a fish of the dim, humus-stained margins rather than open, well-lit streams.
Feeding
Wild bettas of the pugnax group are carnivores in nature, feeding opportunistically on small invertebrates within their microhabitat — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, terrestrial insects that fall onto the surface, and similar prey encountered in leaf litter and along the stream margins. B. breviobesa's feeding ecology has not been studied in detail, but this general predatory pattern is well established across the genus.
In the aquarium the species accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods readily — Daphnia, bloodworm, brine shrimp, and small insects are all suitable. High-quality small pellets and micro-granules may be accepted once the fish has settled, though many wild bettas show a preference for live or frozen fare over dry foods. A varied diet maintains condition and colour; frozen bloodworm and Daphnia are practical staples for most keepers.
Mating
Betta breviobesa is a paternal mouthbrooder: after spawning, the male collects the fertilised eggs into his buccal cavity and carries them through incubation and early larval development. This reproductive mode, shared across the pugnax group and several other Betta lineages, involves the male investing heavily in parental care while eating nothing during the brooding period, which may last one to two weeks or more.
Courtship follows the pattern typical of mouthbrooding bettas. The male displays with spread fins and intensified coloration to attract and assess a female. When a receptive pair is ready, the male wraps around the female in the characteristic anabantoid nuptial embrace, squeezing the eggs free and simultaneously fertilising them. The female plays a passive role once eggs are released; the male then gathers the eggs — and, in subsequent embraces, the total clutch — into his mouth. Females may assist by picking up eggs initially, but the male takes over buccal incubation completely.
Breeding
Once the male has taken up the clutch, he holds the eggs in his buccal pouch for approximately 12 to 18 days — typically around 14 days, with the exact duration varying with water temperature. Throughout this period the male does not feed. Warmer water accelerates development; experienced keepers working with the pugnax group note that incubation can shorten somewhat at the upper end of the species' temperature range.
When development is complete, the male releases free-swimming fry. Clutch sizes in pugnax-group bettas are modest relative to egg-scattering species, reflecting the greater parental investment. The fry are relatively well-developed at release and are capable of taking small live foods — micro-worms, newly hatched Artemia nauplii, and similar prey — shortly after release. Brooding males should not be disturbed unnecessarily, as stress can cause a male to swallow or drop his brood prematurely. Separating the pair after spawning, or providing adequate cover so the male can retire undisturbed, improves success rates in captivity.
In the aquarium
International Betta Congress keepers report that B. breviobesa is tolerant of a relatively wide range of water conditions, describing it as not critical in its water chemistry requirements in captivity — a useful trait for a blackwater specialist, as it means the fish adjusts reasonably well to moderate tap-water chemistry without demanding extremely soft, acidic conditions. A temperature in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius (approximately 70–75 °F) is recommended; the species does not want tropical highs.
Pairs can be maintained in a tank of around 10 US gal, while groups require proportionally larger quarters — 30 US gal or more — with ample cover in the form of caves, dense planting, and driftwood to break sightlines and allow subdominant fish to retreat. Filtration should be gentle; strong currents are unsuitable for a fish from slow-moving swamp habitats, and the labyrinth organ requires unobstructed access to the air surface above the water. Males can be territorial and will fight, so pairs or trios with one male are safer than multiple males in a confined space. The species is generally recommended for the patient keeper who values naturalistic behaviour — the mouthbrooding behaviour in particular is genuinely compelling to observe.
Conservation
Betta breviobesa is listed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), indicating a restricted extent of occurrence combined with continuing decline in the quality and area of its habitat. The entire known range falls within the middle Kapuas drainage of Kalimantan Barat, a region where lowland peat-swamp and riparian forests have suffered extensive conversion to agricultural land — primarily oil-palm plantations — along with logging, drainage, and associated hydrological changes. These pressures have degraded and reduced the blackwater stream habitats on which the species depends.
As a range-restricted specialist with a documented history of habitat loss across its region of occurrence, B. breviobesa is inherently vulnerable to any further contraction of suitable streams. The species has not historically been a significant target of the ornamental-fish trade, and captive breeding by hobbyists with access to the species helps maintain ex-situ material. Sustainable habitat management in Kalimantan Barat and the protection of remaining peat-swamp catchments represent the most meaningful longer-term conservation measures for this and many co-occurring forest-stream fishes.
