Taxonomy & naming
Betta pinguis was described by Heok Hee Tan and Maurice Kottelat in 1998, placing it in the genus Betta, which encompasses the fighting fishes and their wild relatives in the family Osphronemidae. The type locality falls within the Kapuas River drainage of Kalimantan Barat (West Kalimantan), Indonesian Borneo. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Betta pinguis Tan & Kottelat, 1998.
The species is placed in the akarensis group, a complex of Bornean and Malayan mouthbrooding bettas that share a slender body plan and paternal incubation of the eggs. The akarensis group is one of several natural groupings within the mouthbrooding bettas; it is distinguished from the closely related pugnax and waseri groups by a combination of meristic and colour characters. The specific epithet pinguis is Latin for "fat" or "plump," though the fish itself is typically described as moderately slender — the name may refer to a subtle body depth relative to congeners.
Morphology
Betta pinguis reaches approximately 3 in in standard length, making it a medium-sized member of the akarensis group. The body is elongate and moderately compressed, typical of the mouthbrooding Betta lineage — a shape that contrasts with the deeper-bodied bubble-nest building species such as Betta splendens.
Colouration is muted and cryptic, as is characteristic of most wild forest-stream bettas: the base body colour is brownish to olive, with subdued lateral patterning that provides camouflage among leaf litter and marginal vegetation. Fins are less ornate than in the domesticated fighting fish lineages. Sexual dimorphism is relatively modest in this group; males tend to show slightly more developed finnage and brighter colouration when in breeding condition, while females may appear fuller-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Betta pinguis inhabits lowland forest streams in the Kapuas River basin of Kalimantan Barat, Indonesian Borneo. Type specimens were collected from a degraded forest stream, and available data point to tannin-stained, acidic conditions characteristic of Bornean blackwater systems. Water temperature around 76 °F (76 °F) and pH near 5 have been recorded from comparable habitats, reflecting the soft, highly acidic water that peat-swamp and forest-stream bettas in this region typically occupy.
The microhabitat is among marginal vegetation, submerged roots, and accumulations of leaf litter in slow or still water with little current — conditions that also tend toward low dissolved oxygen. This is where the labyrinth organ is critical: as a facultative air-breather, Betta pinguis can supplement gill respiration by gulping air at the surface, allowing it to survive in the oxygen-depleted waters that typify stagnant forest pools and sluggish blackwater streams. Intact forest canopy is important both for maintaining the low light, high tannin, and acidic chemistry the species depends on, and for limiting the sedimentation and temperature fluctuations that accompany deforestation.
Feeding
In nature, Betta pinguis feeds on small insects and invertebrates, picking prey from the water surface and from the substrate among leaf litter — the generalist insectivore diet shared by most wild Betta species. The pace of feeding in still, shaded forest streams is likely opportunistic and patient rather than active pursuit.
In captivity, the species is reported to accept live and frozen invertebrate foods such as Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp), and bloodworm, as well as suitably sized dried products once acclimated. As with other small wild bettas, a diet that includes regular live or frozen invertebrates is preferred for maintaining condition and bringing fish into breeding readiness. Small prey items are appropriate given the fish's size and its preference for slow, deliberate feeding.
Mating
Betta pinguis is a paternal mouthbrooder, and its mating behaviour follows the pattern documented across the akarensis group. Courtship is initiated by the female, who approaches and displays to the male; this reversal of the more familiar dynamic — the male as active pursuer — is characteristic of mouthbrooding Betta species and reflects the considerable parental investment the male will make once spawning occurs.
Spawning proceeds through a series of nuptial embraces in which the male wraps around the female. Eggs are fertilised during the embrace and then collected by the male, who gathers them into his buccal cavity. The clutch size for mouthbrooding bettas of this group is typically in the range of around 20 to 30 eggs — far smaller than the broods of bubble-nest builders, a trade-off for the intensive care the male provides.
Breeding
Once the male has taken the fertilised eggs into his mouth, he enters a fast that lasts through the entire incubation period — he will not eat until the fry are released. Incubation lasts up to approximately three weeks in mouthbrooding Betta species of this type, during which the male holds the eggs (and later the developing embryos and early fry) within his buccal cavity, aerating and tumbling them with gentle jaw movements.
When incubation is complete, the male releases fully formed, free-swimming fry that are already considerably more developed than newly hatched bubble-nest fry. The released fry are capable of taking small live foods — newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and micro-worms are standard first foods — from the outset. Because the male cannot eat during incubation, breeders ensure he is well-conditioned before breeding, and the female should be removed or provided ample cover after spawning to prevent stress to the brooding male. Soft, acidic water mimicking the natural blackwater habitat is important for successful reproduction.
In the aquarium
Betta pinguis is rarely encountered in the hobby and is considered a specialist fish. Its requirements differ substantially from the domesticated Betta splendens: it needs soft, acidic, tannin-stained water (targeting pH around 5–6 and very low hardness) rather than the neutral-to-alkaline tap water that suits many aquarium fish. Gentle or near-absent filtration, substantial leaf litter, and dim lighting with floating plants replicate the forest-stream microhabitat and encourage natural behaviour.
As a labyrinth fish it must have unobstructed access to the water surface to breathe atmospheric air; the gap between the water surface and any cover should be kept warm to avoid chilling the fish during surface breathing. A species or biotope tank approach is strongly recommended — Betta pinguis is not suited to busy community aquaria, and tankmates if any should be small, non-aggressive species sharing similar blackwater requirements. The male's buccal incubation period requires a stable, stress-free environment; disturbance can cause premature release or swallowing of the brood.
Conservation
Betta pinguis is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2025). The listing reflects the species' narrow known range — restricted to the Kapuas River basin of Kalimantan Barat — and the severe ongoing loss and degradation of lowland forest habitat in Borneo through logging, conversion to oil palm plantation, and peat drainage. Blackwater streams and peat-swamp forests are among the most threatened freshwater habitats in Southeast Asia, and species with restricted distributions in these systems face acute extinction risk as their catchments are modified.
Betta pinguis is not established in the hobby in meaningful numbers, and there is no significant captive population buffering the species against wild declines. Conservation of the intact peat-swamp and lowland forest remnants within its range is the primary requirement for its persistence. The Critically Endangered assessment underscores that this fish stands among the most imperilled freshwater fishes on Borneo.
