Betta prima is a compact, paternal mouthbrooding wild betta native to forest swamps, marshes, and slow-flowing streams along the Gulf of Thailand coast and the Mekong lowlands of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. It is a member of the pugnax group — a cluster of small, sombre-coloured bettas that share the male's defining feat of carrying fertilised eggs and newly hatched fry inside the buccal cavity for a week or more, eating nothing throughout. Described by Maurice Kottelat in 1994 from a creek in Chantaburi Province, Thailand, and assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, it has attracted a devoted following among wild-betta enthusiasts for the intimacy of its parental behaviour and its preference for the deeply acidic, humic water that can be genuinely challenging to provide.

Taxonomy & naming

Betta prima was described by Maurice Kottelat in 1994 from a specimen collected at a creek approximately one kilometre along the road to Nam Tok Phliu, branching from the Chantaburi–Trat highway, Chantaburi Province, Thailand (12°32′N, 102°11′E). The holotype is deposited at the Zoological Reference Collection, National University of Singapore (ZRC, ex CMK 10798); paratypes are distributed among CMK, KUMF, MHNG, NIFI, and ZRC collections. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Betta prima Kottelat, 1994, without parentheses, as it was described in its current genus.

The species is placed in the pugnax group (also called the pugnax complex) of paternal mouthbrooding bettas — a clade of medium-to-small, somewhat drab Betta from the Indochinese mainland and associated islands that are united by the absence of a bubble-nest and by the male's prolonged oral incubation of eggs and larvae. Other members of the group include B. pugnax, B. fusca, and several more recently described species from the Thai–Malay Peninsula. Within the genus Betta — which belongs to the family Osphronemidae, alongside the gouramis and the Siamese fighting fish — the pugnax group represents the ancestral mouthbrooding strategy, distinct from the bubble-nesting condition seen in B. splendens and its relatives.

Morphology

Betta prima is a slender, moderately elongated fish reaching around 2 in standard length (SL) in most sources, though some accounts cite individuals up to 3.5 in, a discrepancy likely reflecting total length versus SL measurement conventions. Sexual maturity can be reached at around 1 in SL, making it one of the smaller members of the pugnax group. Body shape is typical of the group: a cylindrical to slightly laterally compressed form, broad-headed in adult males, with rounded to slightly pointed fins.

Colouration is understated compared to bubble-nesting ornamental bettas. The body is brownish to olive, often with indistinct lateral banding or a midlateral stripe that intensifies with mood. Males of the pugnax group characteristically develop a broader, more robust head than females — an adaptation likely related to the mechanics of oral incubation — and sport extended, fleshy pelvic fins (the so-called 'feeler' fins common across Betta) that are proportionally longer than in females. A caudal spike or pointed extension on the tail fin is considered a pugnax-complex trait and may be present in males. The patterning is subdued under stress but can deepen to richer browns and greens when a fish is in condition and displaying.

Habitat

Across its range — southeastern Thailand, the Mekong basin of Cambodia and Laos, and Vietnam including Phú Quốc island — Betta prima inhabits forest swamps, marshy ground, and slow-flowing to still streams with dense riparian vegetation. The type locality is a shaded creek running through secondary forest, and the species shows a preference for heavily shaded, leaf-littered water with an abundance of root tangles and submerged debris that provide both cover and foraging substrate.

Water chemistry measurements from field collections reflect genuinely extreme conditions at the acidic end of the spectrum. Seriously Fish reports a pH of 3.0–5.5 for the species' preferred habitat — highly acidic blackwater with negligible mineral content and the characteristic amber, humic colouration produced by the leaching of organic matter from forest soils and leaf packs. FishBase records a field measurement of pH 6.6 and 78 °F (78.4 °F) taken at one site in October 1999, suggesting the species can also occupy slightly less acidic microhabitats. Temperature across the range spans roughly 73–81 °F (73–81 °F). Like all Betta, B. prima possesses a suprabranchial labyrinth organ that allows it to breathe atmospheric air directly, a critical adaptation for the oxygen-depleted, still, or barely-moving water it most often occupies.

Feeding

In the wild, Betta prima is an opportunistic predator of small invertebrates. The natural diet is dominated by aquatic and terrestrial insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, and zooplankton — essentially whatever live prey of appropriate size is available in the leaf litter and surface film of the humic forest streams the species inhabits.

In the aquarium, the species accepts a range of prepared and live foods. Seriously Fish records acceptance of Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp), and bloodworm, all of which can form the backbone of a practical feeding regime. Because many wild-caught individuals or F1 fish are initially reluctant to accept dry foods, starting with live or frozen invertebrates and gradually introducing high-quality prepared micro-pellets is the standard approach among keepers of wild bettas. Small, frequent feedings suit the fish's natural foraging style better than one large daily meal.

Mating

Betta prima is a paternal mouthbrooder: after courtship and spawning, the male collects and holds the fertilised eggs in his buccal cavity and does not eat for the duration of the incubation. This places it firmly outside the bubble-nesting guild despite being a labyrinth fish; there is no nest construction, no foam surface, and no parental territory built around a fixed point on the water's surface.

Courtship follows the pattern common in the pugnax group. The male displays to the female with flared opercula, intensified body colour, and extended fins, circling and posturing; the female, if receptive, responds with parallel swimming and colour brightening. The actual spawning embrace is a typical anabantoid nuptial clasp: the male wraps himself around the female and fertilisation is external, with eggs released in small batches. The male then gathers the eggs from the water column or from the female — accounts vary on who initially holds them — and transfers them to the buccal cavity, where they remain for the incubation period.

Breeding

After the spawning embrace the male incubates the eggs orally for approximately 7–12 days, depending on temperature — the International Betta Congress records 8–10 days as typical. During this entire period the male fasts completely, a physiological cost that limits how frequently a male can spawn. He holds the clutch through hatching and continues to shelter the larvae until they are free-swimming and capable of independent life, at which point he releases them. Fry emerge as fully formed miniature bettas and quickly begin hunting microfauna.

Breeding in captivity is achievable but requires attention to water quality and chemistry. The species' preference for soft, acidic water — ideally pH below 6 and low conductivity, approximating the blackwater conditions of its natural habitat — should be respected for reliable reproductive success. A species-only tank or a pair setup with abundant hiding places reduces male–female conflict; the male should be monitored and may be removed after he releases the fry if the female is a threat. First foods for the fry include infusoria, vinegar eels, and micro-worms, graduating to freshly hatched Artemia nauplii as the fry grow.

In the aquarium

Betta prima has been kept by wild-betta specialists for some years and, while not difficult to maintain in basic terms, is not a beginner's fish. The species' preference for very acidic, soft, oxygen-poor water — conditions that require RO water or rainwater blended to a pH below 6 — distinguishes it sharply from community aquarium conditions and from the hardier domesticated betta. Surface access is non-negotiable, as labyrinth fishes must breathe atmospheric air; covering the tank fully while leaving a small gap, and keeping the air above the water warm, prevents the suprabranchial organ from being chilled by cold draughts.

A well-planted, heavily shaded tank of 10–20 US gal, furnished with dried leaf litter (Indian almond leaves, Catappa), driftwood, and surface-floating vegetation, suits the species well and replicates the visual and chemical environment of its natural swamp habitat. Filtration should be gentle — a sponge filter or a slow hang-on unit — since the species is adapted to near-still water and strong flow causes stress. Betta prima can be kept in pairs or in small groups according to International Betta Congress records, though males may be intolerant of one another and individual temperament varies; providing sight breaks reduces aggression. The species is best kept with similarly sized, non-fin-nipping fish, or in a species-only setup.

Conservation

Betta prima is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded in FishBase as having been conducted on 16 February 2012. The species' relatively wide distribution across southeastern Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam — spanning both the Gulf of Thailand coastal lowlands and parts of the Mekong basin — provides a buffer absent in the more narrowly endemic members of the group.

Nonetheless, the forest swamps, peat bogs, and slow-stream habitats that Betta prima relies upon are under sustained pressure across mainland Southeast Asia from agricultural conversion (particularly oil palm and rubber plantations), drainage of wetlands for rice cultivation, and the general degradation of lowland riparian forest. The species' dependence on acidic, humic blackwater makes it particularly sensitive to catchment-level changes that alter water chemistry — liming, fertiliser runoff, or loss of the organic-matter input from intact forest canopy can render otherwise structurally intact waterways unsuitable. Sustainable collection practices and habitat protection in the lowland forests of Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam remain relevant to its long-term security.
