The three-spot gourami is one of the most forgiving and widely kept labyrinth fishes in the hobby, a robust, bubble-nesting species from the sluggish lowland waters of mainland Southeast Asia that has been exported by the million and selectively bred into a rainbow of colour morphs. Its common name refers not to three visible spots — only two dark spots mark the body — but counts the eye as the third, a quirk of the original description. Despite the commercial ubiquity of its tank-bred forms, Trichopodus trichopterus remains an instructive and rewarding fish: a genuine labyrinth breeder, a competent nest-builder, and a species whose wild range across the Mekong and associated basins makes it one of the defining freshwater fishes of lowland Indochina.

Taxonomy & naming

Trichopodus trichopterus was originally described by Peter Simon Pallas in 1770, making it one of the earliest formally named gouramis. The species has had a long and tangled nomenclatural history, passing through Trichopus (Lacepède, 1801) and spending decades under Trichogaster — a name still widely encountered in older literature and on aquarium packaging — before a series of revisionary works re-examined the genus-level boundaries. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the valid name as Trichopodus trichopterus (Pallas, 1770), placing it in the resurrected Trichopodus; the parenthetical authority signals that Pallas originally described the species under a different genus.

The specific epithet trichopterus derives from the Greek trichos (hair) and pteron (wing or fin), a reference to the thread-like pelvic fins that are characteristic of the genus. These filiform pelvic rays — trailing well past the body in healthy specimens — function as tactile organs rather than propulsion structures, a feature shared with close relatives and useful for probing vegetated or turbid environments. The common name 'three-spot' is slightly misleading: the two dark spots flanking the lateral line at mid-body and near the caudal peduncle are clearly visible, but the 'third spot' is conventionally taken to be the eye itself, as noted in the original description. The name Trichopodus cantoris is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Trichopodus trichopterus is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed gourami reaching approximately 6 in standard length in the wild, though most aquarium specimens are smaller, typically 4–4.5 in. The body profile is rounded dorsally and ventrally, the head pointed, and the small upturned mouth suited to feeding at the surface and among floating vegetation. The scales are ctenoid and impart a slightly rough texture. Like all members of Trichopodus, the pelvic fins are modified into long, slender sensory filaments that can extend to the level of the caudal fin in relaxed fish.

The wild-type colour is a bluish-grey to turquoise ground overlaid with faint vertical barring and two prominent dark spots — one near the lateral midpoint and one at the caudal peduncle base — plus the eye. Selective breeding has produced a cluster of widely sold morphs: the 'blue' or 'cosby' morph intensifies the ground colour, the 'opaline' replaces the barring with a marbled pattern, and the 'gold' morph replaces the blue with a warm golden-yellow throughout. All morphs retain the two-spot pattern to varying degrees. Males are slimmer with a more pointed dorsal fin; females are rounder in the belly and have a rounded dorsal.

Habitat

The species is native to the Mekong basin, spanning Laos, Yunnan (China), Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, with the type locality in the Mekong system. It has been widely introduced beyond this core range through the aquarium trade and, in some regions, aquaculture and has established feral populations across tropical Asia and beyond.

In the wild, T. trichopterus favours languid, heavily vegetated lowland waters — irrigation ditches, ponds, rice paddies, swamps, marshes, and oxbow lakes — rather than the flowing main channels of large rivers. It migrates into seasonally flooded forest and grassland during the wet season, exploiting the sudden expansion of habitat and food supply that inundation brings. These are characteristically warm, shallow, and often oxygen-depleted environments where the fish's labyrinth organ — a vascularised suprabranchial chamber derived from the first gill arch — gives it a decisive advantage over gill-only competitors. Water conditions vary broadly across this habitat type: FishBase records a temperature range of 72–82 °F and a pH range of 6.0–8.0, with Seriously Fish noting typical aquarium conditions around 72–82 °F and moderate hardness. The species is notably tolerant of variable chemistry, a trait reflected in its success as a transplanted species.

Feeding

Trichopodus trichopterus is an omnivore with opportunistic feeding habits, consuming a wide range of food types across the water column and at the surface. The natural diet includes zooplankton, small crustaceans, insect larvae, algae, plant material, and detritus — essentially whatever is available in the productive lowland waters it inhabits. The filiform pelvic fins likely play a role in locating invertebrates among bottom sediment and vegetation.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts virtually all standard foods: quality flake and pellets, frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, and mosquito larvae, as well as vegetable matter and algae-based preparations. A varied diet that includes live or frozen invertebrate prey improves colour saturation and breeding condition. Like other gouramis it often investigates the surface film and will take food floating there — a behaviour consistent with its habit of gulping atmospheric air at the surface in the wild.

Mating

Trichopodus trichopterus is a bubble-nesting labyrinth fish. Males construct a floating nest of mucus-bound air bubbles at the water surface, typically anchoring it among floating plants or beneath overhanging vegetation. Nest-building intensifies once a male is in breeding condition and may begin before a female is even introduced. The nest can be several centimetres in diameter and a few centimetres deep, and the male defends it vigorously against rivals and perceived intruders.

Courting males display to females with spread fins, intensified colour, and lateral posturing. A receptive female will approach the nest; an unreceptive or over-harassed female will retreat or be chased. Seriously Fish recommends introducing two or three females alongside one male to distribute the male's attention, since a single female can be driven relentlessly to the point of injury. The spawning embrace takes place directly beneath the bubble nest, the male wrapping himself around the female in the typical labyrinth-fish nuptial clasp.

Breeding

Spawning follows the nuptial embrace beneath the nest: the pair turn on their sides, the female releasing eggs while the male simultaneously releases milt. The eggs are buoyant and float up into the bubble nest; the male immediately collects any that drift away and blows them back into the foam. This sequence repeats many times over a spawning session, which can last several hours, yielding several hundred to a few thousand eggs in total.

Once spawning is complete the female should be removed, as the male will drive her away from the nest and may injure her. The male guards the nest with characteristic bubble-nester diligence — retrieving fallen eggs, repairing damaged sections of foam, and chasing anything that approaches. At a water temperature around 81 °F, eggs hatch in roughly 24–48 hours; the fry remain in or near the nest for a further day or two, absorbing the yolk sac, before becoming free-swimming. At that point the male's guarding behaviour declines and he too is best removed to prevent predation. The free-swimming fry are tiny and require infusoria or commercial micro-fry foods initially, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp within a week or so. A shallow water column in the rearing vessel — no deeper than 6–8 in — is important in the first weeks, as the fry's labyrinth organ is still developing and they need ready access to the surface film to breathe.

In the aquarium

Few beginner fish offer as much reward for as little demand as the three-spot gourami. It is tolerant of a wide range of water parameters, accepts virtually any food, and breeds willingly in a standard community tank given a floating plant or two at the surface. For a group, a tank of 31.5–39.5 in or more is appropriate; a single specimen or a male–female pair can be kept in somewhat less space. Water in the range of 72–82 °F and pH 6.0–8.0 covers the wild range comfortably; the fish will live through conditions outside this but displays best within it.

There are behavioural caveats. Males are territorial with one another and with similarly shaped fish; two males in a small tank will skirmish persistently, and in a large tank a dominant male may monopolise space. The trailing pelvic filaments are an irresistible target for fin-nipping species, so avoid combining T. trichopterus with tiger barbs, serpae tetras, or other confirmed nippers. The species generally co-exists well with most peaceful community fish of comparable size — tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and peaceful livebearers — and ignores small invertebrates. Surface access is not optional: as a labyrinth fish it must gulp air periodically, and a tight-fitting, unperforated lid that eliminates the warm air layer above the water will stress or kill it. Gentle or medium-level filtration is preferable to strong surface agitation, which disrupts both the air-breathing habit and any bubble nest the male may attempt to construct.

Conservation

Trichopodus trichopterus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, a reflection of its large native range, broad ecological tolerance, and very high abundance across the lowland freshwater habitats of mainland Southeast Asia. The species is among the most numerous and widely distributed freshwater fishes in its native region, and its populations show no evidence of rapid decline.

Its ecological plasticity — the ability to exploit rice paddies, irrigation canals, seasonal floodplains, and degraded waterways that many other fishes cannot use — gives it considerable resilience in landscapes heavily modified by agriculture. Ironically, the same hardiness that makes it a forgiving aquarium fish means that introduced populations have established in tropical regions worldwide; in some areas, feral T. trichopterus competes with or preys on native fishes and invertebrates, adding a small but real invasive footnote to its biography. Within its native range, however, it remains secure.
