Auchenipterichthys punctatus is a small South American driftwood catfish from the blackish, rocky-bottomed waters of the upper Rio Negro basin in Brazil. It belongs to a family, the Auchenipteridae, whose whole reproductive biology sets it apart from almost every other catfish: mating is internal, and a female carries fertilised eggs before laying them rather than the more familiar external, male-guarded spawn of other South American catfishes. Modest in size at around 6 in, nocturnal, and undemanding once its blackwater preferences are met, it is a discreet, secretive member of the driftwood-cat group rather than a showpiece fish.

Taxonomy & naming

Auchenipterichthys punctatus was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1840, one of the many South American catfishes he named while working on Cuvier and Valenciennes's Histoire naturelle des poissons. It sits in the family Auchenipteridae, the driftwood catfishes, within the genus Auchenipterichthys — a small group of superficially similar, dark-bodied woodcats restricted to South America. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Auchenipterichthys punctatus as the valid combination, and it has not moved to a different genus since its description, unlike many nineteenth-century Siluriformes that were later reshuffled through Doras, Trachelyopterus or other auchenipterid genera.

The genus name Auchenipterichthys is built from Auchenipterus, a related driftwood-catfish genus, plus the diminutive-forming Greek ichthys, "fish" — essentially "a small Auchenipterus-like fish". The species epithet punctatus is Latin for "spotted" or "dotted", referring to the fine speckled pattern on the body that distinguishes it from its close relatives in the genus.

Morphology

This is a compact, deep-bodied driftwood catfish, reaching a documented maximum of about 6 in standard length — a real, if modest, adult size that keepers should plan a tank around rather than assume the fish will stay tiny. The body is stocky, the head broadly rounded, and the skin is scaleless, as in all catfishes of this family, which makes it more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and many standard treatments; dose conservatively and treat with caution.

Like most auchenipterids it carries stiff, serrated, locking spines at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins. These spines catch readily in aquarium nets and can jab an unwary hand, so the fish is best scooped and moved in a container rather than netted. Mature males develop a modified, elongated anal fin used as an intromittent organ during mating — the clearest external sign of the family's unusual internal-fertilisation breeding strategy, described below.

Habitat

Auchenipterichthys punctatus is a South American endemic recorded from the upper Rio Negro basin in Brazil, where it inhabits blackish water over rocky bottoms at modest elevation (roughly 492 ft). Blackwater habitats of this kind are characteristically soft and acidic to circumneutral, stained by dissolved tannins from decaying leaf litter and driftwood, with cover provided by submerged wood, root tangles and rock crevices rather than open sand or dense vegetation.

In the aquarium this translates to warm, gently flowing water with plenty of hiding places — driftwood, rockwork and shaded retreats — that mimic the rocky, wood-strewn stretches of its native river. It is not a fish of open, brightly lit water, and does best when the tank offers real structure to retreat into during the day.

Feeding

This species is a nocturnal benthic omnivore, foraging over the bottom chiefly after dark. Stomach content analysis from wild specimens shows a diet dominated by insect nymphs and adults, supplemented opportunistically by other invertebrates encountered while foraging among rocks and wood.

In the aquarium it readily accepts sinking pellets and tablets, frozen bloodworm, and other prepared foods, along with flake and small live foods such as white worms. Because it is most active at twilight and after lights-out, feeding is best timed for the evening so it is not out-competed by more visible, day-active tankmates — a pattern shared with many nocturnal catfishes. It is an active micro-predator at this size and will consume very small fish such as young tetras, so tankmates should be chosen with that in mind.

Mating

Driftwood catfishes of the family Auchenipteridae are one of the few groups among catfishes to fertilise internally rather than scattering eggs and milt into open water. In Auchenipterichthys punctatus, mature males develop a modified, elongated anal fin that functions as an intromittent organ, used to transfer sperm directly to the female during mating. This is a genuinely unusual strategy among catfishes and is worth stating plainly: fertilisation happens inside the female, not in the water column.

Following mating, the female is reported to store the sperm and later deposit already-fertilised eggs onto aquatic vegetation or other submerged structure, rather than laying and fertilising eggs in the same act. This decouples mating from spawning in time, a pattern documented across several auchenipterid genera including Auchenipterichthys, Tatia and Trachelyopterus.

Breeding

Because fertilisation is internal and the female can store sperm before laying, the breeding biology of Auchenipterichthys punctatus differs sharply from the bubble-nesting armored catfishes or the egg-scattering habits often assumed for Siluriformes generally — neither applies here. Eggs are deposited already fertilised, typically onto vegetation or submerged surfaces, and available accounts do not describe sustained parental guarding of the clutch by either parent once the eggs are laid.

Deliberate captive breeding of this species is not well documented in the hobby; most specimens in the trade are wild-collected rather than tank-raised. Given the internal-fertilisation strategy and the lack of a known, replicable home-aquarium spawning protocol, keepers should treat this as a species that is admired and kept rather than reliably bred at home, and should not expect the recognisable spawning cues (bubble-nests, egg-scatters over plants) used with other catfish families.

In the aquarium

Auchenipterichthys punctatus reaches a genuine adult size of about 6 in, so a modest but real footprint is needed — a tank in the neighbourhood of 35.5 in or more in length, per hobbyist recommendations, furnished with driftwood, rockwork and shaded hiding spots that echo its native rocky, wood-strewn blackwater habitat. Gentle water flow suits it better than strong current. Keep temperature around 73–77 °F and pH in the 6.5–7.2 range, reflecting its soft-to-neutral blackwater origins rather than hard, alkaline conditions.

As with all scaleless catfish, medicate conservatively — copper and many standard treatments should be dosed cautiously or at reduced strength. The locking dorsal and pectoral spines can snag a net and jab a hand, so move this fish in a container rather than netting it. It is nocturnal and secretive, most active at dusk and after dark, and while peaceful toward similarly sized tankmates, it will eat fish small enough to swallow, so avoid housing it with small tetras or other diminutive community fish. It is generally tolerant of other robust, similarly sized species and does not trouble aggressive tankmates that can hold their own, though it is itself easily out-competed by boisterous cichlids for food.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Auchenipterichthys punctatus as Least Concern, based on an assessment dated 11 August 2020 that cites high resilience, a minimum population doubling time of under 15 months, and low vulnerability to fishing pressure. It is not currently considered threatened.

As a South American endemic tied to a specific blackwater habitat type in the upper Rio Negro basin, its long-term outlook is nonetheless linked to the health of that river system — deforestation, mining-related sedimentation and water-quality pressures affecting Amazonian blackwater tributaries are the relevant background concerns for the wider habitat, even though the species itself is not flagged as at risk today.
