Catfish · names

Every name, resolved

A catfish carries a current scientific binomial under the Catalog of Fishes and, usually, an English common name — “squeaker”, “pictus”, “redtail”, “glass catfish”, “raphael”, “iridescent shark”. Siluriformes taxonomy has been split and reshuffled a great deal — many species were first described under a different genus, and big genera like Synodontis, Mystus and Hemibagrus gain species often — so the same fish often travels under more than one name. This index cross-references both layers — the 579 scientific names and 565 common names — and resolves each one to its species page.

Scientific name — the valid binomial under the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names. Common name — English vernacular and trade names recorded for the species. Each entry is tagged with its group. Many little-known stream catfish have no English name at all and appear by their binomial only.
