Taxonomy & naming
Auchenoglanis occidentalis was described by the French ichthyologist Achille Valenciennes in 1840. It belongs to the family Claroteidae, a group of African catfishes that was for a long time lumped into the Bagridae before being split out as its own family; older literature and some aquarium references still file this species and its relatives under "Bagridae", which is why the giraffe catfish is still commonly grouped with the bagrid cats in the hobby. The genus Auchenoglanis is retained as the valid combination for this species.
The genus name is built from Greek roots referring to the neck (auchen-) and an old term for catfish (glanis), likely alluding to the fish's thick-necked, heavy-headed build. The species epithet occidentalis is Latin for "western", a reference to the West African rivers where the species was first characterised, even though it is now known to range far to the east across the continent.
Morphology
The giraffe catfish has the classic claroteid profile: a broad, somewhat flattened head, a stout body tapering to the tail, and long, sensitive barbels used to probe the substrate. FishBase records a true maximum size of 27.5 in standard length, making this one of the larger catfish an aquarist is likely to encounter outside the true giant species — the size trap here is real, since juveniles sold small grow into a genuinely big fish, and aquarium specimens are regularly reported reaching 12–15.5 in.
Like most catfish in this account, Auchenoglanis occidentalis is scaleless (naked-skinned), which has direct consequences for medicating it (see "In the aquarium"). It carries two dorsal spines and three to four anal spines that are stiff and serrated; these lock in place and can jab a keeper or tangle badly in a net, so the fish should always be moved in a container rather than netted.
Habitat
This is one of the most widely distributed African catfishes: it is recorded from West African rivers, the Lake Chad basin, the entire Congo River system, the Nile in Ethiopia and Sudan, Lake Tanganyika, and the Lake Turkana/Omo River and Shabeelle River drainages further east. The type locality is the Tshopo River near Kisangani in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Across this huge range it favours large rivers and lakes with soft, muddy bottoms, living as a demersal (bottom-dwelling) fish in warm tropical water. FishBase gives a temperature range of roughly 70–77 °F and a pH of 6.5–7.8 — neutral to slightly acidic water rather than the hard, alkaline conditions of a rift lake, even though the species does reach Lake Tanganyika at the eastern edge of its range.
Feeding
Auchenoglanis occidentalis is an omnivorous benthic forager and a nocturnal bottom-feeder. In the wild it works muddy substrate for plankton, seeds, detritus, mollusks, insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans, using its long barbels to locate food it cannot see.
In the aquarium it is an easy and undemanding feeder, taking sinking pellets, frozen foods and most prepared foods readily. Because it forages most actively after dark, it does best when fed once the lights are out, so it is not out-competed by more visually active, daytime tankmates.
Mating
The species is oviparous with male parental care. Two wild spawning strategies have been reported across its range: in river populations, eggs are deposited under roots or in leafy detritus along the bank, while in rift-lake populations a flat, circular pit is used instead. In both cases the male is reported to brood and guard the eggs.
Dimorphism is not well documented for this species, and no reliable external sexing method is established in the aquarium literature available; keepers report no obvious colour or shape difference between the sexes.
Breeding
Despite the male parental care documented in the wild, Auchenoglanis occidentalis is not reliably bred in home aquaria. The chief obstacle is size: a fish that reaches 27.5 in SL needs far more space than most home setups can provide for a breeding pair to establish and guard a spawning site, and there is no documented hormone-farming or commercial-scale breeding program for this species in the way there is for some large Asian catfishes. Aquarists should treat this as an essentially unbred species in captivity and not expect to replicate its wild reproduction at home.
In the aquarium
Sizing the tank correctly is the first and most important decision with this species: true adults reach 27.5 in SL, so a young giraffe catfish sold at a few centimetres will eventually need a very large, long, heavily filtered tank — this is a classic size-trap species and not suited to anything but a serious, spacious setup or a large pond-style system.
Its skin is scaleless, so it is medium-sensitive to copper and many common medications; treat conservatively, often at half the labelled dose, as you would for loaches, puffers or true eels. Its dorsal and anal spines are stiff, serrated and lock into place — move the fish in a container rather than a net to avoid tangling and injury to both fish and keeper. It is mostly nocturnal and benefits from cover during the day, feeding most naturally after lights-out. Match tankmates to its eventual bulk: small fish will eventually be seen as food by an adult giraffe catfish, and the substrate should be soft to accommodate its digging, barbel-probing foraging style.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Auchenoglanis occidentalis as Least Concern, with the most recent assessment dated 22 February 2025. This reflects its very wide distribution across West African rivers, the Congo basin, the Nile, Lake Chad and East African rift-lake and rift-valley drainages, with no major documented conservation threats.
Because the species is so broadly distributed and locally abundant across multiple river systems, it is not currently a conservation priority, though as with any wide-ranging African river fish, habitat degradation and damming in individual drainages could affect regional populations even while the species as a whole remains secure.
