Taxonomy & naming
Cranoglanis bouderius was described by the Scottish naturalist John Richardson in 1846. It is the type species of the genus Cranoglanis and of the monogeneric family Cranoglanididae — the helmet catfishes — a small East Asian lineage that has at various times been shuffled among the Siluroidei near Bagridae and Ictaluridae before molecular and morphological work settled it as its own distinct family. The species has also historically been placed under other generic combinations in older literature as the group's relationships were worked out; the Catalog of Fishes treats Cranoglanis bouderius, in the genus Cranoglanis, as the valid combination.
The family name Cranoglanididae and genus Cranoglanis derive from Greek kranos (helmet) and glanis (a catfish), a reference to the bony, helmet-like plates covering the head — the feature behind the common name "helmet catfish". The species epithet bouderius has a regional origin tied to Richardson's original Chinese material rather than a simple descriptive Latin root.
Morphology
The helmet catfish has an elongate, subcylindrical body typical of large river catfishes, with a flattened, bony head armoured by fused dermal plates — the "helmet" that gives the family its name. Like most catfishes it is scaleless, with naked skin rather than true scales, though the head shield gives it a harder, more protected profile than many soft-skinned relatives. It carries barbels around the mouth for locating food by touch and scent in murky river water, a tall dorsal fin, and stiff, serrated locking spines at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins that can be raised and locked in place.
FishBase records a maximum size of 17 in standard length and roughly 2.2 kg, making this a genuinely large catfish rather than a small aquarium species — the size trap that catches out keepers who buy juvenile catfish without checking their adult dimensions applies squarely here. Fin ray counts include a dorsal fin formula of II/5–6 spines and soft rays.
Habitat
This species is native to the Zhujiang (Pearl River) drainage of Kwangsi (Guangxi) Province in southern China, with its range extending into northern Vietnam. It lives on the bottom of rivers with clear, flowing water, favouring the main channel and larger tributaries of the Zhujiang system rather than still or heavily vegetated water.
GBIF and regional survey records confirm the distribution across the Zhujiang valley and into Vietnam. Water temperatures in the wild range through a warm-temperate to subtropical annual cycle; hobbyist reference (ScotCat) gives a working range of about 68–75 °F with a pH of 6.0–7.2, consistent with a moderately soft to neutral, flowing river habitat rather than the harder, more mineral-rich water of African rift lakes or the very warm, soft blackwater of Amazonian streams.
Feeding
Cranoglanis bouderius is a nocturnal, benthic predator. FishBase records its diet as shrimps and small fishes, and ScotCat likewise describes it as predatory, taking small fishes, shrimps, aquatic insects and other invertebrates from the river bottom, foraging mostly after dark using its barbels to locate prey in low light.
In any managed setting this translates to a fish that should be fed meaty foods — whole prawn, mussel, earthworm and other invertebrate or fish-based fare — rather than a general omnivore diet, and one that is likely to view much smaller tankmates as food given its predatory habits and eventual size.
Mating
ScotCat reports that Cranoglanis bouderius matures at around four years of age and spawns in schools in the wild, with the season running from late March to late June and peaking in May. Spawning takes place in batches at water temperatures of roughly 77–82 °F. There is no evidence in the available sources of pair formation or courtship display typical of cavity-spawning catfishes; the pattern described is closer to a seasonal, temperature-triggered group spawning event timed to the regional wet season.
Breeding
Wild spawning behaviour is reasonably well documented: adults build nests by burrowing into the substrate, and the eggs are adhesive, deposited and protected within the nest rather than scattered freely in open water. This puts the species closer to a substrate-nesting mode than an open-water egg-scatterer, though the source material does not specify which sex, if either, guards the nest afterward.
Artificial propagation has been attempted as part of conservation efforts for the declining wild stock, but research sources describe captive-bred propagation as challenging, with concerns over the genetic diversity of any captive-reared population. There is no documentation of this species being bred in home aquaria — it is not a hobby fish, and virtually all available biological data comes from wild population studies and fisheries-conservation research rather than aquarist experience.
In the aquarium
Cranoglanis bouderius is not a hobby fish. ScotCat notes it is not commonly seen in the aquarium trade and that documented care information is limited; this is a wild river catfish studied primarily for fisheries and conservation reasons, not one bred or traded for aquaria. Anyone who does encounter it should plan around its real dimensions and biology rather than treat it as a manageable community fish: at up to 17 in and 2.2 kg it needs a very large, long system as an adult, not a standard community tank — the classic size trap of buying an inch-long juvenile catfish without planning for what it becomes.
As with virtually all catfishes, its skin is scaleless and therefore more sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard treatments than scaled fish, so any dosing should be conservative and ideally half-strength. It also carries stiff, serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal spines that can snag in a net and jab the handler, so it should be moved in a container rather than netted. Given its predatory, nocturnal habits it would need dim lighting, solid cover, and tankmates too large to be eaten — but in practice this is a species best appreciated in its native rivers or in research contexts rather than kept.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Cranoglanis bouderius as Vulnerable (VU, assessed 2011, criteria A2ae+4ae). It was historically a key food fish of the Zhujiang River valley, and wild populations have declined significantly due to habitat degradation, overfishing, water pollution and dam construction fragmenting and altering its river habitat.
Conservation responses documented in the research literature include an annual fishing ban intended to let stocks recover during the spawning season, alongside research into artificial breeding as a hedge against further decline — though propagation remains technically difficult and the genetic diversity of any captive stock is a stated concern. As a food fish tied to a specific, heavily developed river system rather than an aquarium species, its conservation trajectory depends on fisheries management and river habitat protection in the Zhujiang basin rather than anything the aquarium trade influences.
