Taxonomy & naming
Ernstichthys megistus was described by the Ecuadorian ichthyologist Gustavo Orcés Villagómez in 1961. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, within the genus Ernstichthys, a small South American genus of dwarf banjo cats. GBIF and the primary literature treat Ernstichthys megistus as a stable, valid combination, with no old-genus synonymy noted in the sources consulted.
The genus name Ernstichthys honours a naturalist named Ernst, combined with the Greek ichthys, "fish". The species epithet megistus is Greek for "greatest" or "largest", a name that reads as ironic today: the type specimen from Ecuador reached only about 3 in standard length, and some Peruvian specimens are smaller still, around 1 in. The name most likely reflects the fish being the largest known member of its genus at the time of description, not a large fish in any absolute sense.
Morphology
The banjo catfishes take their common name from their outline: a broad, flattened, shield-like head and forebody that narrows abruptly into a long, slender, almost eel-like tail, giving the fish the profile of the instrument's body and neck. Ernstichthys megistus follows this plan in miniature, with a depressed head bearing small barbels used to feel out prey and substrate in the dark.
As in all Aspredinidae, the skin is completely scaleless — instead the body is covered in small tubercles and rough skin texture rather than true scales or bony plates. This naked skin makes the species, like loaches, puffers and eels, notably sensitive to copper and to many standard fish medications, which should always be dosed conservatively. Maximum recorded size is small: about 2.5 in SL, occasionally cited to 3 in SL for the type material, with some Peruvian populations reported markedly smaller (around 1 in). This is a genuinely dwarf catfish rather than one that merely starts small — but its size should still be verified before assuming any newly acquired banjo cat is this modest, since several relatives in the family grow much larger.
Habitat
Ernstichthys megistus is known from western Amazonian drainages on the eastern slope of the Andes: the Bobonaza River basin in Ecuador and the Marañón River basin in Peru. Both are headwater tributary systems of the upper Amazon, running through lowland and foothill forest.
It is a bottom-dweller of soft sediment, burying itself in fine sand during the day with only its eyes exposed and emerging to forage after dark. Aquarium-keeping reports describe a tolerant range of soft-to-moderate, slightly acidic to neutral water — around pH 6.0–7.5 and 75–81 °F — consistent with typical lowland Amazonian tributary conditions. Specific water chemistry data from the wild habitat itself is sparse, so these aquarium-derived figures should be treated as a reasonable working range rather than a precise wild reading.
Feeding
Like other banjo catfish, Ernstichthys megistus is a nocturnal benthic micro-predator. In the wild it is presumed to sift through sand and detritus for small aquatic insects and crustaceans, using its barbels to locate prey it cannot see. It is not documented taking plant matter in any meaningful way.
In the aquarium it accepts small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and other small invertebrates, and will also take sinking prepared pellets once settled. Because it hunts by night and buries by day, food is best offered after lights-out, or it risks being out-competed by more active tankmates before it ever finds the meal.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Ernstichthys megistus specifically. Breeding across the banjo catfish family (Aspredinidae) is poorly studied as a whole, and this species is no exception — there are no reliable observations, captive or wild, of its mating behaviour to draw on.
Breeding
Breeding in Ernstichthys megistus is essentially undocumented, and no reliable captive spawning has been reported. What is known comes from the wider Aspredinidae: in several genera within the family, the female carries the fertilised eggs attached to her belly skin via small fleshy stalks called cotylephores, brooding them externally on her own body until they hatch, rather than depositing them in a nest or scattering them freely. Clutches in the family can run into the thousands of eggs, with fertilisation external.
Whether Ernstichthys megistus follows this belly-carrying strategy has not been confirmed in the sources available, and it should not be assumed without direct evidence. Honestly: this is a species whose reproductive biology is essentially a blank page, and hobbyists should not expect to breed it.
In the aquarium
This is one of the few banjo catfish genuinely suited to a modest aquarium — 10 US gallons (about 10 US gal) upward is cited as a workable minimum, well below what larger Aspredinidae or most other catfish families demand. Its real adult size stays around 2.5–3 in SL, so it will not outgrow a modest setup the way many catfish eventually do, but it still needs a fine, soft sand substrate for burrowing; coarse gravel prevents the natural hiding behaviour that keeps this shy fish comfortable.
Being scaleless, it is medication-sensitive — dose copper-based treatments and many standard remedies at reduced strength, as for loaches or puffers. It has no locking spines of concern comparable to many other catfish families, but as with any bottom-dweller it is best scooped in a container rather than chased with a net to avoid stress and injury. Keep it with peaceful, small tankmates that will not out-compete it for food after dark, provide dim lighting and leaf litter or fine cover, and expect to see very little of it during the day — it is a nocturnal, sand-dwelling ambush specialist, not a display fish.
Conservation
Ernstichthys megistus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is listed as Not Evaluated. It is known only from two river basins on the eastern Andean slope, the Bobonaza in Ecuador and the Marañón in Peru, and there is no published population or threat data available.
As with many narrow-range headwater fishes in this region, deforestation, water quality changes and habitat disturbance in these Andean-Amazonian tributary systems are the plausible long-term concerns, though no specific assessment exists to confirm current pressures on this species.
