Taxonomy & naming
Micromyzon akamai was described by John P. Friel and John G. Lundberg in 1996 as both a new genus and a new species within the banjo catfish family Aspredinidae. It is the type species of Micromyzon, and no other species has since been placed in the genus. The Catalog of Fishes treats Micromyzon akamai as the valid name, and it has never carried a prior combination in an older genus such as Bunocephalus or Aspredo — it was recognised as distinct from the moment it was described, on the strength of its unique eyeless skull and reduced jaw structure.
The genus name Micromyzon combines Greek roots meaning roughly "tiny sucker", a nod to both its minute size and its small, ventrally placed, sucker-like mouth. The species epithet akamai is not classical Latin or Greek but a Hawaiian word meaning "clever" or "smart", chosen by the describers as a tribute rather than a morphological description. Aspredinidae, the banjo catfish family, takes its common name from the flattened, guitar- or banjo-shaped body shared across the group; Micromyzon akamai is among the most modified members of that family, having lost its eyes entirely.
Morphology
This is one of the smallest catfishes known to science. Maximum recorded size is under 0.5 in standard length, and females reach sexual maturity at just 0.5 in — the smallest sexually mature body size documented in any banjo catfish. The body follows the flattened, tadpole-like banjo-catfish plan: a broadened head and forebody tapering to a slender tail, with naked, scaleless skin reinforced by hypertrophied (thickened) skull-roofing bone and body armor in place of scales.
The defining feature of Micromyzon akamai is that it has no eyes whatsoever — a genuine, complete loss rather than the reduced eyes seen in some other Aspredinidae. The premaxillae (the tooth-bearing bones of the upper jaw) are extremely reduced, and pigmentation is sparse, consistent with a species that spends its life in darkness and never needs to see. Like other catfishes it lacks true scales; its "skin" is bare and, in aspredinids generally, often bears fine papillae rather than smooth flesh.
Habitat
Micromyzon akamai is known from the river channels of the Lower Amazon Basin, including the lower Tocantins River, in Brazil. Unlike most aquarium-familiar catfishes, it does not live in shallow, vegetated margins — it inhabits the main channels of large white-water rivers, on sandy substrates at considerable depth, roughly 16–66 ft down, where it presumably burrows into or sits on the sand.
This is classic Amazonian white-water river habitat: warm, turbid, fast-moving water over shifting sand, far from light and far from the reach of ordinary collecting methods. Published water-chemistry data specific to this species are sparse, but Amazonian white-water systems of this kind typically run warm (roughly 75–82 °F) with soft, mildly acidic to neutral chemistry; that range should be taken as a general regional guide rather than a confirmed measurement for this species.
Feeding
No feeding study has been published for Micromyzon akamai specifically. Based on its mouth morphology — a small, ventrally positioned, sucker-like mouth with reduced jaw bones — and its sand-channel habitat, it is presumed to be a nocturnal benthic micro-predator or detritivore, sifting or grazing fine organic material and small invertebrates from the sand it lives on, in the manner typical of small Aspredinidae.
Nothing is documented about diet in captivity, because the species has essentially never been kept. Any care approach would have to extrapolate cautiously from other small sand-dwelling banjo catfishes rather than from direct evidence for this species.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour have not been documented for Micromyzon akamai. The original description and subsequent literature focus on its anatomy and systematics rather than reproductive biology, and the species' deep-channel, sand-substrate lifestyle makes it extremely difficult to observe in the wild.
Breeding
Breeding biology is unknown for this species. Several other banjo catfishes (Aspredinidae) are known to carry fertilised eggs attached to the female's belly skin via fleshy stalks called cotylephores until they hatch, but this has not been confirmed for Micromyzon akamai, and the describers did not report it. Given how rarely the species is even collected, captive breeding has never been attempted or documented, and none should be assumed possible.
In the aquarium
Micromyzon akamai is not, in any practical sense, an aquarium fish. It is extremely rare in the hobby because of its combination of minute adult size (under 0.5 in SL) and a highly specialised deep-river, sand-channel habitat that ordinary aquarium-fish collecting methods do not reach — it is essentially never offered for sale. Any hobbyist accounts of keeping it should be treated with real skepticism absent documentation.
What can be said with confidence follows from general catfish biology: like other Aspredinidae it is naked-skinned (scaleless), which means it would be unusually sensitive to copper-based and many other medications, warranting conservative, half-strength dosing if treatment were ever needed. Its tiny size is itself a hazard in a general aquarium — it could pass through ordinary filter intakes or be lost among substrate, and its total blindness means it would need to locate food entirely by non-visual cues. There is no established husbandry protocol for this species, and no evidence it has ever been maintained long-term in captivity.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Micromyzon akamai as Least Concern, based on a 2022 assessment. No specific threats have been documented for the species in the conservation literature, and its rarity in surveys and in the trade appears to reflect the difficulty of sampling its deep, sandy-channel habitat rather than a population decline — the Lower Amazon and Tocantins river-channel habitat it occupies is extensive and not, on current evidence, under acute pressure specific to this species.
Because it is essentially never encountered outside targeted scientific sampling, there is no meaningful aquarium trade in wild-collected individuals, and no conservation concern tied to collection.
