Taxonomy & naming
Noturus fasciatus was described by Brooks M. Burr, David J. Eisenhour and Josh D. Grady in 2005, in a paper published in Copeia (2005:783–802) that split it out from the wide-ranging Noturus crypticus complex. Ten specimens served as the type series, and the species is known only from the Duck River drainage and two minor tributaries entering the lower Tennessee River, both in Tennessee.
The genus Noturus belongs to the family Ictaluridae, the North American catfishes, and is by far its largest genus — the "madtoms," a group of small, often narrow-range stream catfishes that has been repeatedly split as ichthyologists resolve cryptic species using morphology and genetics. Older literature sometimes placed these small ictalurids in the now-synonymized genus Schilbeodes; that name is obsolete and Noturus is the valid genus under the Catalog of Fishes. As with many recently described madtoms, Noturus fasciatus was carved out of a species complex rather than being a wholly new discovery — a reminder that madtom diversity is still being sorted out.
Morphology
The saddled madtom is a diminutive catfish, reaching only about 2 in (2 in) standard length — small even by madtom standards, and a fish that will never be mistaken for the larger, familiar Ictalurus or Pylodictis catfishes of the same family. Like all Noturus it has a naked, scaleless skin, a broad flattened head, barbels around the mouth, and an adipose fin that runs low and is broadly joined to the tail, a hallmark of the genus.
The common name refers to a dark saddle-like blotch pattern along the back, used along with fin markings to separate it from closely related madtoms in the same drainage. As in every Noturus, the pectoral and dorsal fins carry stiff, serrated spines that lock erect — and in this genus those spines are genuinely venomous, not just mechanically sharp. A venom gland at the base of each spine ruptures when the spine is locked, delivering a defensive sting; in the fish itself, envenomation studies on related Noturus note effects including edema, hemorrhaging and localized tissue damage, underlining how much defensive investment a fish this small carries.
Habitat
Noturus fasciatus is a narrow-range endemic of the Duck River system, a major Tennessee River tributary, plus two minor tributaries entering the lower Tennessee River directly — all within the state of Tennessee, USA. It is a Nearctic species through and through, restricted to this single corner of the Mississippi basin's Tennessee River drainage.
Madtoms in general live in small to medium streams, sheltering by day under gravel, rubble and slab rock in riffles and runs, and this species is presumed to follow the same pattern. Critically, this is cool, temperate running water, not tropical: madtoms tolerate and often prefer cooler conditions, roughly 60–68 °F (60–68 °F), and do not need — or want — a heated tropical setup. Water quality and habitat integrity in the Duck River system are the whole story for this species' survival, since it has nowhere else to go.
Feeding
Like other madtoms, Noturus fasciatus is a nocturnal benthic micro-predator and omnivore. It forages after dark across the streambed for aquatic insect larvae — stonefly, caddisfly and mayfly nymphs are typical madtom fare — along with other small invertebrates and detritus picked from gravel and rubble.
There is no aquarium-feeding data for this species specifically, since it is not established in the hobby, but its foraging ecology matches the wider Noturus pattern: a bottom-dwelling hunter that is most active at night and relies on cover during the day rather than actively patrolling in daylight.
Mating
Specific breeding observations for Noturus fasciatus are sparse — unsurprising for a species described only in 2005 and known from a handful of tributaries. What is known comes largely by inference from its close relative, Noturus crypticus, which spawns from late May through August in cavities and under rocks, the typical ictalurid pattern.
Madtoms and their larger ictalurid relatives (bullheads, channel catfish) are cavity or crevice spawners: a pair selects a sheltered space — under a rock, in an undercut bank, or a similar hollow — where courtship and egg-laying take place away from open water rather than as a broadcast spawn.
Breeding
Following the wider Ictaluridae pattern, and by direct inference from its sister species Noturus crypticus, Noturus fasciatus is presumed to be a cavity nester in which the male guards and fans the egg mass after spawning, defending the clutch until the fry disperse. This is standard ictalurid parental care — proactive, single-male guarding rather than the broadcast-and-abandon strategy seen in many other catfish families.
There is no record of this species being bred in captivity, and given its conservation status and total absence from the aquarium trade, that is not expected to change; what breeding activity exists is presumed to occur only in its native Duck River habitat.
In the aquarium
Noturus fasciatus is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it is not traded, it is Endangered, and collecting it would work against its conservation. It is included here for completeness as part of the astonishingly diverse Noturus madtom radiation, but the species profile below reflects general madtom biology and its own conservation reality rather than hobby experience.
Were it ever kept, the size trap runs the other way from most catfish: at under 2 in this is one of the smallest catfishes in North America, not one that outgrows a tank. What does carry over from every madtom and every scaleless ictalurid is medication sensitivity — its naked skin means copper and many medications must be dosed conservatively, as with loaches, puffers and eels — and genuine venom in its locking pectoral and dorsal spines, which should never be handled with a net; move any madtom in a container instead. It is nocturnal and would need dense cover (gravel, rubble, slate) and cool, well-oxygenated, unheated water rather than a tropical setup.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Noturus fasciatus as Endangered. Its entire known range is the Duck River system and two small Tennessee River tributaries — a single-drainage endemic with essentially nowhere else to retreat to if its home water is degraded.
That extreme range restriction, rather than any single acute threat, is what drives the listing: siltation, impoundment, water quality decline or any other pressure on the Duck River system places the whole species at risk simultaneously. As with many recently split, narrow-range madtoms, conservation of Noturus fasciatus is really conservation of one river system — habitat protection and water-quality management in the Duck River drainage are the species' only realistic safeguard.
