Taxonomy & naming
Noturus funebris was described by Charles Henry Gilbert and Joseph Swain in 1891. It belongs to the family Ictaluridae, the North American freshwater catfishes, and to the genus Noturus, the madtoms — a large group of small, secretive catfish found only in North America. The genus Schilbeodes was once used for some madtoms, an older combination now folded into Noturus; the Catalog of Fishes treats Noturus funebris as the valid name and the type locality lies in the Cahaba River watershed of Alabama.
The genus name Noturus comes from the Greek notos (back) and oura (tail), an old reference to the adipose fin running nearly continuous with the tail in these catfish. The species epithet funebris is Latin for "funereal" or "mournful," a nod to the fish's dark, somber colouration compared to paler madtom relatives — hence the common name black madtom.
Morphology
The black madtom is a small, slender catfish reaching a maximum recorded length of about 6 in total length (FishBase), with a life-history study from the Cahaba River drainage reporting a maximum of 5 in standard length — a genuinely diminutive species even by madtom standards. The body is dusky to blackish overall, giving the fish its common and scientific names, with the adipose fin joined broadly to the tail, a hallmark of the genus.
Like all madtoms and ictalurids, Noturus funebris is scaleless, its skin naked rather than armoured or scaled. It carries stiff, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines that lock erect and can tangle in a net; madtoms are the venomous branch of North American catfish, with venom glands at the base of these spines capable of delivering a painful sting. This combination — bare skin plus locking, venomous spines — shapes nearly every aspect of how the species should be handled and kept.
Habitat
Noturus funebris is native to the southeastern United States, with populations documented in the Cahaba River drainage of Alabama and additional coastal-plain waterways across Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi. It lives in clear, moderate-to-fast flowing water over gravel and sand substrates in springs, creeks and small rivers, typically near vegetation.
Within these streams the black madtom shelters by day among undercut banks, root masses and woody debris, emerging to forage after dark. As a temperate North American stream fish it experiences a genuine seasonal cycle of cool winters and warm summers rather than constant tropical heat, and its native water is well-oxygenated and flowing rather than still or blackwater.
Feeding
The black madtom is a nocturnal benthic omnivore and micro-predator, foraging the streambed mostly after dark for aquatic invertebrates, detritus and small prey items it finds among gravel, root masses and woody debris. Its barbels and nocturnal habits are typical of the genus, letting it locate food by touch and smell in low light.
In the rare instances it is kept, it takes sinking pellets along with frozen and prepared foods, and — as with other nocturnal catfish — does best when fed after the lights go out so it is not out-competed by more active, daytime tankmates.
Mating
Documented spawning in Noturus funebris, from a life-history study in the Cahaba River drainage of Alabama, runs from late June into August. Pairs seek out small, closed cavities to spawn in — the study noted that a set of thirty flowerpot-style artificial cavities placed in the stream yielded no nests at all, suggesting the species is particular about cavity size and enclosure rather than spawning in any convenient hollow.
Females are relatively fecund for a madtom, with an estimated 109 ova per female recorded in the same study. As in other ictalurids, courtship and cavity selection precede spawning inside the chosen hole, undercut bank or crevice, after which the male takes over guarding duties.
Breeding
Noturus funebris is a cavity nester typical of its family: the pair spawns inside a hole, undercut bank or other enclosed cavity, and the male alone guards and fans the resulting egg mass until the fry disperse, with no assistance from the female afterward. This male-only parental care is the norm across Ictaluridae, from madtoms up to the large channel and blue catfishes.
The species has essentially never been bred in a home aquarium. What is known about its reproduction comes entirely from field studies of wild populations in the Cahaba River drainage, and its evident preference for very specific closed-cavity spawning sites — rejecting standard artificial cavities offered in the field study — suggests it would be a demanding subject for captive breeding even if attempted.
In the aquarium
The black madtom stays genuinely small by catfish standards — up to about 6 in, with most individuals smaller still — so it does not carry the size trap that looms over many larger North American and South American catfish; a modest tank suits it far better than the stock-tank-sized setups some ictalurids eventually demand. It is rarely offered in the aquarium trade, so most keepers who encounter it do so incidentally rather than by seeking it out.
Two care points follow directly from its biology. First, like all madtoms it is scaleless, so it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper and to many medications — treatments should be dosed conservatively, often at half strength. Second, its pectoral and dorsal spines are serrated, locking and venomous: they readily snag in a net and can deliver a painful jab, so the fish should always be moved in a container rather than netted. Provide cover such as root masses, driftwood or smooth rock to mimic its undercut-bank habitat, keep water cool to moderate rather than tropically warm, and expect a strictly nocturnal fish that is most active once the lights go out.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Noturus funebris as Least Concern, most recently in a 2022 assessment, reflecting a stable population across its native range in the southeastern United States with no significant documented threats. It is not listed under CITES.
The species' range spans multiple river drainages across Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi rather than a single isolated waterway, which supports its favourable status, though as with many small-bodied stream fish, habitat quality in its home drainages — water clarity, flow and the woody debris and undercut banks it depends on for cover — remains the practical basis for its long-term security.
