Taxonomy & naming
Ompok karunkodu was described by Heok Hee Ng in 2013, one of several Ompok species split out as South and Southeast Asian sheatfish taxonomy was revised through the 2000s and 2010s. It belongs to the family Siluridae — the Old World sheatfishes, which also contains the European wels catfish Silurus glanis and the Southeast Asian glass catfishes of the genus Kryptopterus — and to the genus Ompok, a group of small-to-medium river sheatfishes distributed across South and Southeast Asia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Ompok karunkodu as a valid, currently accepted name; it has not been placed in Silurus, Callichrous or any of the older catch-all genera historically used for Asian sheatfishes.
The species epithet is Tamil, not Latin: karunkodu combines karun (black) and kodu (line or stripe), a direct reference to the dark midlateral stripe that runs the length of the body — the fish's most obvious field mark and the character used to separate it from superficially similar Ompok in the same river system.
Morphology
Ompok karunkodu has the classic sheatfish silhouette: a long, laterally compressed body, a long-based anal fin, a short dorsal fin set well forward, and no adipose fin. The head is somewhat flattened with a distinctly prognathous lower jaw that projects beyond the upper — a feature shared with several Ompok and typical of a fish that hunts by ambushing prey from below or head-on. Two pairs of barbels (a longer maxillary pair and a shorter mandibular pair) help it locate prey in low light or turbid water.
Colouration is silvery to pale grey-brown along the flanks, marked by the dark midlateral stripe referenced in the species name, fading toward a pale belly. Like all Siluridae the skin is completely scaleless — smooth and naked rather than armoured — which leaves the fish more exposed to skin damage, parasites and osmotic stress than a scaled species, and is the reason medication dosing needs care (see "In the aquarium"). FishBase reports a maximum recorded size of 9 in SL, and aquarium literature gives an adult size of roughly 7–9 in — a genuinely mid-sized catfish, not a fish that stays small.
Habitat
The species is known from the Amaravathi River, a tributary of the Kaveri (Cauvery) system in Tamil Nadu, southern India. FishBase lists it as a freshwater, demersal fish of tropical latitudes, living and foraging near the river bed rather than in open water. As a Kaveri-drainage endemic it experiences a monsoonal river regime — seasonal flooding followed by lower, clearer dry-season flow — though detailed limnological data specific to this species has not been published.
Aquarium-care sources give a workable water envelope of roughly 73–81 °F, pH 6.5–7.5 and moderate hardness (GH 3–12), consistent with a warm, mildly soft-to-neutral South Indian river rather than a soft acidic blackwater or a hard alkaline system. Because the wild range is narrow and the species is described as rare even within it, habitat degradation in this single river system is a direct threat to the whole population.
Feeding
Ompok karunkodu is a predatory fish. FishBase gives the species a trophic level of 3.8, placing it solidly among the carnivores, and related Ompok species are documented taking a mixed diet of insects, zooplankton and — especially as they grow — fish prey, shifting toward piscivory with size and prey availability. The prognathous lower jaw is consistent with an ambush hunter that takes prey at or near the surface as well as along the bottom.
In the aquarium it should be treated as a predatory, largely piscivorous catfish rather than an omnivorous scavenger: it will take large meaty foods such as whole fish, prawn and chunky pellets, and it will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow. Feeding should be planned around its adult size and appetite, not its size as a juvenile import.
Mating
No wild spawning behaviour has been documented for Ompok karunkodu specifically. Aquarium-trade sources describe the species as oviparous (egg-laying), consistent with sheatfishes generally, but give no detail on courtship, spawning triggers or egg placement. Given how rarely the wider genus is bred outside commercial hatcheries, and that this species is both narrowly distributed and Endangered in the wild, it is reasonable to assume its reproductive biology in nature is still effectively undescribed.
Breeding
Home breeding of Ompok karunkodu is not established. Within Siluridae, the smaller glass catfishes (Kryptopterus) are essentially never bred in captivity and the trade in them is wild-caught, while the larger river sheatfishes — bigger Ompok, Wallago and Silurus — spawn in open water on a seasonal cycle and are propagated, where they are propagated at all, through farm or hormone-induced hatchery spawning rather than by hobbyists. There is no published record of O. karunkodu being bred in a home aquarium, and given its Endangered status and single-river native range, any captive-breeding effort would be of real conservation value rather than routine hobby propagation. Prospective keepers should assume this species will not reproduce in a home tank and should not expect to source captive-bred stock.
In the aquarium
This is a size-trap fish: juveniles sold in the trade are small and unassuming, but the adult reaches roughly 7–9 in SL (up to 9 in SL recorded), and a predatory river sheatfish of that size needs a genuinely large tank — aquarium references suggest a minimum of around 120 US gal — with strong filtration and swimming room, not a small community setup. Because it is a naked, scaleless catfish, it is sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard ich and parasite treatments; any dosing should be conservative, ideally at reduced strength, and copper-based products avoided where possible.
It is a solitary, largely nocturnal bottom-dweller that does best with subdued lighting, cover to retreat to during the day, and tankmates too large to be swallowed — given its predatory habit, small fish and shrimp will simply become food. Aquarium sources put its lifespan at 8–12 years and rate it a difficult fish recommended for experienced keepers only, reflecting both its adult size and its status as an uncommon, wild-collected import from a threatened population rather than an established aquarium strain.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Ompok karunkodu as Endangered, an assessment dated 30 January 2021. The species is known only from the Amaravathi River, a single tributary of the Kaveri system in Tamil Nadu, and aquarium-trade sources independently describe it as rare within its native range — a narrow-range endemic is inherently vulnerable to any single pressure on that river.
Threats have not been itemised in the sources available here, but river systems in this part of southern India face well-documented pressure from damming, water abstraction for agriculture, pollution and sand mining, any of which could affect a species confined to one drainage. Any specimens in the aquarium trade should be assumed to be wild-collected from an already Endangered population rather than captive-bred, which is a further reason for caution around this species specifically.
