Taxonomy & naming
Ompok malabaricus was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1840. It belongs to the family Siluridae — the true or sheatfish catfishes of Europe, Asia and parts of Africa — and to the genus Ompok, a group of South and Southeast Asian river silurids that also includes the various "glass catfish" species popular in the aquarium trade. The Catalog of Fishes treats Ompok malabaricus as the currently valid combination; older literature sometimes placed Indian silurid catfishes under other generic names before the modern Siluridae were sorted out, so historical records for this fish may appear under superseded combinations.
The genus name Ompok is a vernacular term absorbed into scientific nomenclature for these Asian sheatfishes. The species epithet malabaricus refers to the Malabar Coast of southwestern India, reflecting the type locality and the species' restricted range along that stretch of coastline. The name Ompok goae is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Ompok malabaricus reaches a maximum reported size of about 20 in standard length, making it one of the larger members of its genus. The body is elongated and laterally compressed, with the smooth, scaleless skin typical of true catfishes — silvery to grey-brown along the flanks, paling toward the belly. Like other Siluridae it carries a long-based anal fin running much of the length of the body, a small, low dorsal fin set well forward, and barbels used to feel out prey and substrate in low light or turbid water.
As a scaleless catfish, Ompok malabaricus is more sensitive to copper-based and some other medications than scaled fish, a point worth remembering for anyone treating disease in a tank that houses it. It does not carry the heavily locking, venomous spine armament of some catfish families, but a fish of this size and strength should still be handled and netted with care.
Habitat
The species is found in rivers of the coastal plains and submontane regions of southwestern India, restricted to a narrow range from Goa south through Karnataka to Kerala — the Western Ghats drainage system. It is described as benthopelagic and amphidromous, meaning it lives and forages through the water column and near the bottom rather than staying pinned to the substrate, and undertakes migrations linked to its life cycle between fresh water and, at least in part, more brackish or downstream reaches.
Rivers of this region are monsoon-driven systems: warm, freshwater habitats with strong seasonal flow variation between the dry season and the monsoon. Specific pH and hardness figures were not found in the sources consulted; keepers should treat this as a warm, well-oxygenated, flowing freshwater species from tropical southern India rather than assume the soft blackwater conditions associated with some other Asian catfishes.
Feeding
FishBase describes Ompok malabaricus as piscivorous, feeding on small fish, while a feeding-ecology study from the Chalakudy River in Kerala found a broader, omnivorous diet in practice — fish parts, molluscs, crustaceans, insects, and plant and algal matter. Together these sources point to an opportunistic predator that will take any animal prey it can catch and swallow, supplemented with incidental plant material.
In the aquarium this translates to a fish that should be offered whole fish, prawn and other large meaty foods alongside sinking pellets. Any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth should be assumed to be at risk; the same Kerala study also found feeding activity dropped during the monsoon, which coincides with the species' peak reproductive period.
Mating
Detailed field observations of courtship in Ompok malabaricus were not found in the sources consulted, but the Chalakudy River feeding-ecology study reports that peak reproductive activity occurs during the monsoon season, when river flow and turbidity increase sharply — a pattern shared by many South Asian riverine catfishes that time spawning to seasonal floods. As with other larger Ompok and related sheatfish genera (Wallago, Silurus), reproduction in the wild is tied to river conditions rather than to a fixed aquarium-friendly cycle.
No aquarium spawning accounts for this species were found. Given its close relatives — the smaller glass catfishes (Kryptopterus) are essentially never bred in captivity, and larger Siluridae are mostly propagated on river-fed farms rather than in home tanks — there is no reason to expect Ompok malabaricus to be different, and hobbyists should not expect to trigger natural pairing and spawning in a home aquarium.
Breeding
There is no established aquarium breeding protocol for Ompok malabaricus in the sources available, and honesty is warranted here: this is not a home-breedable fish. Its reproduction, like that of other larger Siluridae, follows a seasonal, monsoon-triggered river-spawning pattern that is not readily replicated in captivity. Where larger Asian sheatfish and shark catfishes reach the aquarium trade at all, supply is typically wild-caught or, for some related species, produced on commercial hormone-induced hatcheries rather than through natural pairing in a tank.
Parental care beyond spawning has not been documented for this species; there is no evidence of nest-building or brood-guarding behaviour. Aquarists should treat any specimen in the trade as wild-collected or farm-raised rather than captive-bred, and should not expect breeding activity in a home setup.
In the aquarium
Ompok malabaricus is a size-trap species: juveniles sold in the trade are small and unremarkable, but an adult reaching roughly 20 in SL needs a very large, long, dedicated aquarium — something well beyond what most home tanks provide — and is not a realistic choice for a standard community setup. Anyone considering this fish should plan for adult size from day one, not the size it arrives at in a bag.
Because it is scaleless, it is sensitive to copper and should be medicated conservatively. It is a nocturnal, predatory river fish, so it appreciates dim lighting, cover such as driftwood or overhangs to retreat into during the day, and strong water flow and good oxygenation reflecting its native monsoon rivers. Tankmates must be too large to be swallowed — this is a fish that will eat anything that fits in its mouth — and given its size, robust, similarly large river fish are the only realistic companions. Handle and net it carefully given its size and strength.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Ompok malabaricus as Least Concern, based on an assessment from 29 June 2010. It remains restricted to river systems of the Western Ghats region of southwestern India, an area recognised as a global biodiversity hotspot facing pressure from damming, water abstraction, pollution and habitat modification even where individual species are not yet classified as threatened.
As an endemic confined to a fairly narrow coastal stretch of India, its long-term status is closely tied to the health of Western Ghats river systems rather than to any single, well-quantified threat. The Least Concern rating should be read as a reflection of currently available data rather than a guarantee that the species faces no regional pressure.
